Hello,
We realize that we are very late to express our deepest condolences, but we wanted to let your family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this month and several of these will be dedicated to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and hometown of Joshua D. Sheppard US Army Specialist.

We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community, their families and friends and others who support our mission.

We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you safe and strong.

Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Brother,
It has taken me years just to be able to write this. You were one of best friends I've ever had. I could always count on you. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of you. I talk about you all the time to my Soldiers. That day is forever in my mind. I remember sitting in the truck joking and making fun of people. Talking about how that day seemed so much different from the rest. That day changed my life forever. Brother you have helped me grow into the leader I am today. Whether it be to ensure the Soldiers are trained to the best of my ability or to remember to take it easy when they mess up because we were them so many years ago. I still wear my bracelet every day with your name on it. I will never forget you for you are forever ingrained in my heart.

Sheppard, it's been 11 years today since you passed from this world. I have carried a heavy load since then. It was an honor to have known you and to be at your side when you passed away. You always reminded me of myself at your age and to this day your loss still hurts. I'm sorry that I haven't paid my final respects at your grave. The last time I saw you was putting your casket on the C130 home. I've tried to move on since then and have failed. I Love you. You will always be my Soldier and personal hero. I only wish I could have brought you home safe. God Bless you, your family and your memory.

From 2007 until 2011, I kept a picture of Josh on my desk so that I would never forget. Everyday I sat down to work and started the day seeing him, thinking about him and the morning of 22 Dec, and I would say a short prayer. In 2011, I moved the picture of Josh to my home where I see it all the time. For years there wasn't a day that went by where I did not stop to think about Josh. These days, I think of Josh no less than once a week and more often when I see good things. I think of your son when the sun is setting, when I am sitting silent at church, when I see soldiers in uniform, when I hear certain songs, when I meet and talk to old vets, when I am reminded about Iraq, and when I take the time to appreciate Gods beautiful creations. I was there that day in Abu Ghuraib (Baghdad) and I was beside Josh that morning. I just want you to know that Josh is not forgotten. You have my deepest sympathies for your loss. The world is a darker place for having lost Josh.

I miss you everyday but never anymore than this time of year. We only knew each other for a few months, but in that time you left a lasting impression in my heart. You taught me to two step (I was terrible), you introduced me to Oklahoma charm and hospitality, but most importantly you taught me that friendship can last longer than life itself. I know you're probably kicked back relaxing, watching the troops leave Iraq with a smile on your face. That thought and the thoughts of the good times we shared get me through the toughest days. I love you Cowboy and I always will.

The flag is flying in the sky
A daily reminder of who and why
We sit here remembering them today
These heroes that now lie in their grave.

While here on earth, the bravest ones
A soldier, a mother, a daughter, a son
The father's who went far off to war
To ensure our safety and so much more

To keep our children happy and free,
Someone must do this job, you see
So, today remember the soldiers who served,
Because this is one thing they truly deserve.

The loved one's that they have left behind,
The Gold Star mothers, like your and mine
We honor them proudly, every day
Our American Soldier...Proud and Brave
By Shannon Williams-Austill

I want to thank this soldier for their sacrifice.
And, I wish to extend my deepest regards to the loved ones they have left behind. Their service to our nation, has not gone unnoticed. They are our heroes, who paid the ultimate price for us, and that is something that every American needs to be reminded of and remember everyday.
The freedom we all have, we have because of brave young men and women who made a choice to defend and serve.
Today, let me remember your loved one with you.

To all the wonderful heartfelt condolences, thank you doesn't seem enough. I do appreciate and feel the prayers of all of you. We sorely miss our Joshua. No more lives need to be lost, nor any further families destroyed.

Today is the 3rd anniversary of Joshua’s death. We remember him every day, not just on this day. December 22, 2006 was the first mission for us (Civilian Dog Handlers). We were specifically looking for Matt Maupin. ( The only missing soldier at that time)
I remember loading up very early that morning we had to wait for sometime for the fog to lift. I saw so many young faced soldiers, I was amazed.
They all looked so professional, tough and capable. I had a conversation with a few of them and knew we were in the best hands.
It was a long drive to get to the search location. They unloaded the heavy equipment to grade the area we needed to work the dogs. My dog alerted on an area that needed to be dug out with a backhoe. We had only been working about 15 minutes when things got crazy. I was working my dog about 50 ft. from where Joshua was working on the backhoe when they hit the area with a RPG then opened up with small arms fire from two directions. They got everyone out pretty quick, word spread fast that a soldier was down and did not make it.
By the time we got back to the Green Zone for the debrief everyone knew it was Joshua.
There was not a dry eye among the soldiers, the dog handlers or the command staff.
You son was so well loved by everyone in his unit.
We attended his memorial service at Camp Liberty. There was standing room only. I was taken back by the number of soldiers and base personal that attended. The soldiers stood at attention the entire service then walked up front one at a time to pay their respects.
I can not tell you how sorry I am for the loss of your son. It’s so hard to lose any friend or family member, but to lose a son is beyond painful.
Believe me I understand your pain, my son was not a soldier, but he passed away on his 25th birthday. 11-13-09.
I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your son and his service to this Country. I want to thank you for raising such a fine young man. I will always carry his name and face in my heart.

I get up everyday and put on this uniform and head to work in this blistering heat. I first wake and think of all the selfless sacrafices made by true American Hero's and every moringing with this thought crosses my mind you are one of the first people who come to my mind. I remember so clearly when we ripped Lt Jensens ranger tab off that uniform and he sent us on the hike with the plugger. I still laugh when I think of that. What a fun hike with you. I remember we made up a cadence about LT Jensen on our way back. It was so funny. I still have my half of that ranger tab. I remember that you got the Ran piece of that tab because you ran the whole way until you found your stuff hanging in that tree. I miss you man.

The American people indulge and immerse themselves daily in the freedoms made possible by our military, and by the ultimate sacrifices borne by those who have preceded us. We who wear the uniform make sacrifices daily so that freedom becomes reality. SPC Sheppard died a few feet from my gun truck on 22 December 2006. His memory lives with me daily, but especially this Memorial Day in Baghdad. Today my Soldiers and I paid tribute to Joshua and the other 4,300 brothers and sisters who have perished here. We remembered this day in their honor. And we remembered that as Soldiers, we are not born into this world to serve ourselves, but to serve our country. I will never forget SPC Sheppard and the sacrifice he made for us.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Joshua, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I served with Spc Sheppard in the 642nd for quite some time. I actually had the honor of working with him in Yuma Arizon. I always thought he was a Soldier of good morals. He was funny and he continuously put a smile on my face, that of which is not easy to do for a lower enlisted. Spc Sheppard carried a lot of respect in all he did, at least where I was concerned. I thank GOD every now and then that there are Soldiers like Spc Sheppard who can make leaders like me feel good about the job we do. Rest in Peace, and God bless to your family.

He taught me to do my job better especially to work with those around me easier regardless of the job they do and he was always will to lend a hand on the weekends to help a friend out to have a good time and get way from the everyday activities of the instalition. He will be missed by those who knew him and will be owed a debt of gratitude by those who did not. He did what we have all trained to do and all sworn to do. I can still remember working on vehicles, taking a break outside the fence and talking to him. I pray for him, and his family. He will be greatly missed.

If I were an American Soldier

If I ever go to war Mom, Please don't be afraid.
There are some things I must do, To keep the promise that I made.
I'm sure there will be some heartache, And I know that you'll cry tears,
But your son is a Soldier now, Mom, There is nothing you should fear.

If I ever go to war Dad, I know that you'll be strong.
But you won't have to worry, Cause you taught me right from wrong.
You kept me firmly on the ground, yet still taught me how to fly.
Your boy is a Soldier now Dad, I love you Hooah, Even if I die.

If I ever go to war Bro, There are some things I want to say.
You've always had my back, and I know it's my time to repay.
You'll always be my daybreak, through all of life's dark clouds,
Your brother is a Soldier now, Bro, I promise I'll make you proud.

If I ever go to war Sis, don't you worry bout me,
I always looked out for you, but I can't do that anymore,
Cause I'm a big brother to all in America.
I love you so much and you know that, Your brother's a soldier now Sis,
So wipe your eyes, I'll be fine even if I die.

If I ever go to war my Friends, We'll never be apart,
Though we may not meet again, I'll hold you in my heart.
Remember all the times we had, Don't let your memories cease,
Your friend is a Soldier now, Dear Friend, And I'll die to bring you peace.

And when I go to heaven, And see that pearly gate,
I'll gladly decline entrance, Then stand my post and wait.
I'm sorry Sir I can't come in, I'm sort of in a bind,
You see I'm still a Soldier Sir, So I can't leave them behind.

I had the honor of serving as Joshua's Commanding Officer for 18 months. Joshua was one of the hardest working and loyal Soldiers in the mighty Deuce. His enthusiasm and smile could always light up the room and brought joy to everyone around him. Shepp, as nicknamed by his fellow Soldiers, would go to any length to help someone in need or get the job done. Very polite and well mannered, Shepp embodied all of the Army values and epitomized the Soldier’s Creed.

To Joshuas's family: my sincere and deepest condolences for your loss. No words can ease your pain, but I hope that time will heal your wounds. Nothing can fill the void of Joshua’s absence, one’s only recourse is to celebrate his life and accomplishments, and never cease to honor his memory. Please know that Joshua's life has not gone in vain; his sacrifice has no doubt saved countless lives and made our country safer and more secure.

Joshua believed in what he was doing, and loved his country, the Army, and his fellow Soldiers very much. I will always remember Joshua as a man of honor, courage, and conviction, and will never forget Joshua Sheppard, a true American hero.

I send my condolences to you and your family! I am part of the 642nd Engineer Company but unfortunately was not able to deploy with the unit. Shep has been with the unit about as long as I have and we've been good friends throughout the whole time we've known each other. No one would have ever thought anything like this was going to happen to such a good person. He truely is a great person to work with and be around. He is an individual, but thats what everyone loved about him. He was a great friend to many and he will be missed dearly!

Lost but never forgotten!!

I am so sorry for the loss your family has endured. Shep was an amazing person with a good heart. My husband was his roommate in iraq and was there when this tragedy occured, he is still over there coping with this loss. He will always be remembered in our hearts. Everytime I think of shep, i think of him at the 642nd engineer bbq they had the weekend before they deployed. In his cowboy hat and flannel shirt, sittin on the tailgate with us, blaring his Alan Jackson....we all loved him, and he will be missed everyday. On behalf of my husband, SPC Weiss, who served proudly next to Shep, we are very sorry, our prayers are with you

I do not know you and didnt know Josh. But I know you've lost someone who held a special place in your heart and in your life.

Although no one else can truly share the sadness you feel now, may memories of Josh bring you peace and reassure you that Love endures forever.

Speak to him now, and know he will be listening...and know that when your work on earth is through, Josh will be waiting to welcome you into God's heavenly kingdom thrilled to be reunited once again.

God bless you.

"Love is stronger than death even though it can't stop death from happening, but no matter how hard death tries it can't separate people from love. It can't take away our memories either. In the end, life is stronger than death.”

when I heard the news last night, my mind instantly went back to the summer of 2005. That's when I first met Josh, or as we called him, Cowboy. I learned the cardinal rules of never touching the Cowboy hat, country music is the only music, and saw first hand what true friendship and brotherhood was. I have so many great and funny memories that involve cowboy and am truely saddened by his death. I can never thank you, his family enough for raising such a wonderful man who gave so willingly.
Thank you for your sacrafice Cowboy, you will forever be in my heart from all the good times we shared during the summer of 05 be it camping, or just hanging around at Joshy's place or mine!

My condolences to SPC Sheppard’s family for this unfortunate loss. I was lucky enough to have been assigned to the 642nd Eng Co for two and a half years. Anybody working outside of third platoon good easily see the cohesion set forth, and Shep contributed with his loyalty, honor, and pride. Because of soldiers like him, the rest of us take comfort every new day we begin in Iraq, knowing the man next to us has our backs’, no matter the circumstances. Thank you SPC Sheppard.

Our Prayers are with the entire family. I want to thank Joshua and all our other soldiers for the freedom they contiue to provide all the people of the United States, they are our guardian angels. He is with our heavenly father now and will recieve peace and joy forever and ever.

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Marty, Julie and Joshua's brothers my condolences to you for the lost of your son and brother Joshua. You don’t know me but I am the First Sergeant of the 642nd Engineer Company (The DEUCE). I had the honor of being Joshua's First Sergeant. Specialist Joshua D. Sheppard will always be remembered in the DEUCE. At times we may have questioned some of his decisions but there was now questioning that he loved serving his country and this company. He was a very loyal Soldier and there was no questioning his integrity. He built a bond with his fellow 3rd Platoon Soldiers. They knew that if they ever needed anything they could turn to Shep(their nickname for him) for help and he would help what ever way he could. They could go on and on about all the memories they have of Joshua. Part of the Soldiers Creed is that we will never leave a fallen comrade behind. As a Soldier we take comfort in the fact that we will be brought home. Joshua's mission that day was to bring another Soldier home to his love ones. His Platoon Leader said he was proud and excited to be part of this mission. Unfortunately, he made the ultimate sacrifice and died honorably on the battlefield. This company has and continues to mourn the loss of Joshua our brother. I promise you this that the 642nd Engineer Company will remain steady in the War on Terrorism and will complete its mission as we know that is what Joshua would want us to. We will do this to honor him. He also loved and talked about his family. I remember seeing Joshua outside of our barracks at Fort Drum. He stopped me and said “Hey Top, my brother enlisted into the army”. He was so excited and proud of that. We talked for a few minutes about it and he went on his way. I know we can’t say anything or do anything to make you feel better about your loss. Know that we share in the loss of this fine American Soldier. If there is anything that any of us can do for you please do not hesitate to ask. I am so sorry for your loss and I will continue to pray for you. May God be with you during this difficult time and take comfort that Joshua is in a better place.

Thank you so much for your sacrifice for our wonderful country. Please know that your son has proformed an honorable service. I do not know him, but he must have been a wonderful, caring, loving and devoted young man. Because of brave men like him we continue to have our wonderful freedoms here that we treasure so much. I hope some day we will be able to enjoy all of our freedoms in the joy of knowing that no-one wants to take those away from us. I want to thank you-the family. You have also served by your son's service. I praise God for your family. Thank you also for your service. Twana Blevins-Crescent, Oklahoma
