Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Volker Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to deployed troops this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Robert James RJ Volker US Army Specialist. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Robert, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Its taken me a year to leave something on this page because I guess I really did not know what to say about his death and I still don't. For those of you that know me I date Robert in high school. He was a great boyfriend and a great friend even when we stop dating. I really want to say to his family and his wife that this man changed my life for the better he always made me see the good in myself and in my life. I wish we never stopped dating but that's how life goes and we both meet great people for us. To Martha I don't know you but I am sure he loved you very much and you must have meant the world to him, I know this because that's how he treated me and I just dated him, so you must mean even more. He was a great guy. I will miss him dearly and I will always cherish my memories of him.

To the Volker Family,
I did not know Robert, but I knew his father, we grew up together in West Virginia. We had lost touch over the years. I saw an article that mentioned that SPC Robert Volker had fallen in combat and then found my way here through the internet. When I saw the picture of SPC Volker, I knew it was the son of the Robert I grew up with. I returned from Iraq the month Robert gave the ultimate sacrifice.
I wish to give my deepest sympathies to the entire family, especially to SPC Volker’s wife, his mother and my childhood friend, his father.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Dear Volker Family,
I am a soldier now assigned to B co 1/5 cav and I served with R.J for a long time while assigned to E FSC. I am a Bradley mechanic and I very much miss Robert... He became like a brother to me and I always looked forward to him coming to me with problems on his brad. No matter if they were big or small, Robert was all about attention to detail, I enjoyed repairing his vehicles and being close to him as he was a very big help in keeping his own vehicles in the fight.. He was like a brother to me and we always reminised on times past and what we were going to do when we got home. I am very touched by Roberts care for others and his un paralelled passion for his battle buddies.. Robert will be GREATLY MISSED by myself and all of the other brothers in arms whom he served with...
"I will see you again my brother, whether soon or not so soon, we will enjoy the company of one another once again"

For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God’s hand
For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear
God help us heal the wounds of hate and the misery of war
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

I just recently heard the news... and it broke my heart. I went to school with Robert... first time I met him was 6th grade in band class. I ended up sitting next to him then because we both played french horn. From then on, we became really close friends till we graduated back in 2003 and we went our separate ways (I went to college on the East Coast, while my parents moved to the West Coast). Because of it, I haven't had the opportunity to visit Big Spring in 3 years...
Thinking back, I remember all the little details about our friendship...such as his nickname (it was Alfred from the batman comics because he always seemed like he would make a cool old guy). Or how he and a couple of our other buddies tried to get me to teach me how to skateboard. Or one particularly boring day in history class, he showed me the various uses of duct tape (hat, wrapping paper, etc). It was a crazy day, I laughed so hard when I got home because my backpack was filled to the brim with random pieces of duct tape. I have so many great childhood memories of him. It's a pity that he passed away so young, but he was fighting for a cause that he believed in. I thank him and all the other soldiers for being so brave... I know that I wouldn't have the courage to fight as bravely as they did.
Anyway, just wanted to say that he was a very kind-hearted, genuinely good guy who always told me that I would become a great person. He was the first person that I told about wanting to be a famous filmmaker someday. He didn't laugh, but in fact looked me straight in the eye and told me that it WILL happen. He was so confident in his response...for that, I'll be forever grateful. Hopefully I'll live up to his expectations... RIP RJ Volker..

In My Pocket
I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.
My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.
They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.
Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.
But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

Dear Martha, Melissa, Robert, Jonathan, and Volker Family,
My heart aches for all of you and I am so sorry about the loss of your husband, son, brother, and friend. R.J. was in my husband's company and I know his loss has been felt deeply. He had many good friends, was well-loved and will be missed deeply. I wish there was more I could say to comfort you all at this time. Just know that my family and I are praying for God's comfort -- for you and your family -- that he would wrap his arms around you and hold you close. R.J. made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and we will not forget that sacrifice...his or yours. With Love and prayers, Meg Turner and Family

I have no eloquent words to express my feelings. R.J. is my nephew and I am proud of him! When I had learned he was going into the Army, I asked him "Are you sure you want to do this?" and he said "Yes". It was not my place to question him, so I simply supported his decision. I will miss him terribly. My heart goes out to his wife Martha, his parents Robert and Melissa and his brother John. They are stronger than they realize and they will survive this tragedy. I love all of you!

To Martha, Robert's parents,Robert and Melissa, and his brother, Johnathan, and to his loving grandparents, family and friends , I want to express my deepest sympathies. Words do not adequately communicate the feelings and emotions that I wish to convey. Robert was in my husband's battalion and was a model soldier. His loyalty, integrity, and courage were unmatched. He was well-respected by the soldiers, the non-commissioned officers, and the officers of the 1-5 CAV.
Robert was a member of a very select group, the United States Military. Less than one-half of one percent of our 300,000,000 will raise their right hand to swear an oath to protect the Constitution of the United States of America. That number is roughly 1,500,000. We truly enjoy our freedoms because of the character, the courage and the sacrifices of the Few, soldiers like Robert.
A flag given to a family cannot adequately thank this family and the other families for their ultimate sacrifice. Please know this. They will not be forgotten by their fellow soldiers or by the family members. When the war is over, the memory of Robert will be honored in our hearts. He will not be forsaken.

Even though I have never met this young man who was tragically taken away from his family, he is a second cousin of mine. My heart goes out to Melissa, John, Shelley and anybody else in the family that I have not mentioned. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Yesterday, 28 December 2006 I was a pilot on an airline flight from Philadelphia to DFW . I noticed a young US Navy sailor standing near the door of the jet bridge in his uniform. I said Hi and asked him what ship he was with. He proudly told me the USS Roosevelt. A few minutes later I was told by the gate agent that he was a body escort. When I was in the USMC I also was a body escort once for a squadron mate.. It is an honor that really cannot be explained. I went over to him again and said “Body escort” and he told me it was his brother. I just said “Iraq” and he nodded and said “US Army”. Its been many years since I felt such a shock. Here was a 19 year old member of our military taking his bother home. He stood there for 10 minutes tall in his uniform very proud if his present position in life. Later we went down to the tarmac and the casket arrived and he stood by his brother as he was raised into the aircraft. He held a salute until the casket was in the cargo hull and slowly lowered the salute. We went up to the passenger area and he was seated. I flew the aircraft to DFW. When we taxied in we could see the motorcade there to pick two brothers up for the journey to Big Springs. Once again the younger brother proceeded to the now open cargo compartment and saluted as the casket was lowered from the aircraft. I stood about 100 feet away and watched a lone 19 year old member of our armed forces watch and supervise this trip in a calm professional manner. Seeing this reminds me of our young men overseas and the incredible job they are doing. Airline employes are particularly sensitive to the sacrifices of our youth after the attacks of 9/11 into out workplace.
Every time I fly over Big Springs, Texas the rest of my career I will remember the brave young Sailor taking his brother home. God bless both RJ and Jonathan and their family during this tough time.

To the Volker Family
Many a person walks this earth we call home and leaves nary a footprint in the sands of time, or positively touches the life of a child, elder, peer or parent.
As a father of an Iraq Army Vet, Major Chad Elliot Kirchner, who may be called back to Iraq any time now, I want to say to all the Volker family that your son Robert, who may also be your brother, cousin, nephew, friend or uncle made his footprint forever in service to his country and to all those formentioned.
We are running out of Robert's in this great nation and heaven help us when they are all gone. I am positive he is at peace with the Lord and may all those near and dear to him find peace in their heart in rememberance of this true american hero.
God Bless all the Volker family and God Bless you Spc. Robert J. Volker

I am at a loss of words to say only that I my prayers are with Robert's family and loved ones. I am an old school friend of his that I can even remember back to our days in band. These are days that I will cherish the rest of my life knowinf he fulfilled his dreams in becoming a soldier. I remember the first time he told me he was going to be a soldier we were in the 8 th grade together at Runnels Jr. High. He is a hero yesterday, today, and forever to come. May God be with his loved ones and help them find peace. I will always remember Robert and the good times we had in school.

To the Family of Spc. Robert J. Volker:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.
