Aaron was born Feb. 11, 1977, in Dallas to Suzie and Dale Strahan. After his mother remarried, Aaron and his sister were adopted by Denton County Judge and prominent Dallas lawyer George Allen Preston Jr.
Aaron was a graduate of W.T. White High School in Dallas. He later went to Texas State University in San Marcos to study business and history and eventually settled as a resident there. At age 26, Aaron joined the U.S. Army as a combat engineer to become an explosives and demolitions expert and planned for future employment in the oil and mining industry upon completion of his military service. Aaron belonged to the 9th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, following a longstanding family tradition of military service and an inherent sense of duty. He achieved the rank of specialist and was additionally cross-trained as a sniper and paramedic. He loved Texas and fishing and hunting in the Texas Hill Country and while away in foreign lands he missed the beautiful Texas sunsets.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Suzie Stowers Preston; his paternal father, Leslie Dale Strahan; his adopted father, George Allen Preston Jr.; his maternal grandparents, C.K. and Mary Stowers of Preston Hollow; and paternal grandmother Frankie S. Strahan.
Survivors: Sister and brother-in-law, Mariah and Noel H. Coward Jr. of Maypearl; brother, Richard A. Preston of Dallas; niece, Amanda Preston; nephews, Thomas Coward and Noel H. Coward III and Julia Coward, all of Maypearl; and his paternal grandfather, Howard Lawson Strahan of Baton Rouge, La.

Aaron was a very close friend. He was also the guy that jumped in and helped me out in a scrape. There were others along the way that have had their opportunity and chance, but he´s the only one who actually did. I´ll add that his sterling record of being a man among men coincided with the fact that my luck in finding knuckleheads seemed to include him on numerous occasions. Because of our friendship and that short period of time we had together, He aided me in the heat of battle no less than thrice. And once against likely insurmountable odds. I'll add that he had my back over the 13 years that I knew him. He never hesitated to enter the ring with the bull and was a savvy warrior and closest of friends.
I got to know Aaron and became buds when we were in high school. He was a member of Off Season Corp. a social fraternity of student athletes and class leaders that represented W.T. White High School in North Dallas through involvement in student leadership, school functions, and community service. Upon graduation we ran together in San Marcos while in college for a year or two. He was and is a brother.
Aaron and his memory are always present with us. My entire family misses Aaron, and we will never forget the grand memories, friendship, and sarcastic humor he brought to our lives.
I am forever grateful for his ultimate sacrifice and those of his fellow soldiers.
Salute´ to Aaron.

It has been no less than 16 years since he passed, and yet the pain is still fresh and alive. I check this page from time to time, just to re-read all of the lovely heartfelt messages from friends and family. I don't think I'll ever stop missing him. He was more than my uncle, he was my father figure. Life hasn't been the same without him. Love you uncle Aaron.

To Aaron's family,
I was a childhood friend of Aaron's. I was just made aware of his sacrifice. I am so sorry that I was not there at his funeral. He was such a great friend and kid. His mother was my cub scout den mother and was so wonderful. She is missed as well. If I could say anything to him I would hope that he knows that he will never be forgotten. He will always have a special place in my heart. I regret that I will never have the chance to reconnect with him and thank him for everything he has done for us all. My hero.

I attended Aaron's burial with my son to both show my last respects to a local hero and demonstrate to my son the sacrifice that men and women have made to protect the freedoms around the world. My son has always had an interest in serving his country since he was just a small child. He needed to see first hand the impact of war on families. I remember the quiet ride back from National Cemetery and pulling into the drive and asking my son if he was sure he wanted to enlist. I will never forget his answer " more today Dad than ever before". I am a proud father just as I'm sure Aaron's family is proud of him. Hayden will ship off to Marine boot camp in less than two weeks. Today as a nation, we honor those that made the ultimate and unselfish sacrafice. Today you are still my hero.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Aaron Lee Preston, SPC Preston, was not only my uncle, he was my father figure for many years of my life. Whilst my biological father wasn't there, Aaron took over and helped to raise me along with my mother, Mariah Coward, and Mary Stowers, my great-grandmother. I will miss him very much and his death only adds to the sorrow that has seemed to follow my mother and I around. Though while I am sad, I am happy. He is no longer in the throes of war and is in a peaceful, happy place along with the others of our family. I am proud to have had him as my uncle, and as my father figure, and will always be proud of him. He died doing what he loved, and he died protecting his loved ones. I love you, Uncle Aaron.

To the family of Spc. Aaron Preston,
I want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers this holiday season. It is a heart-breaking anniversary and I'm sure it has been very difficult. I do understand your pain. My brother, SFC Michael J. Tully, was also killed by an IED in Iraq on Aug 23, 2007. He was only 33 yrs old, in fact, today he would have been 34 yrs old. I miss him dearly as I'm sure you miss Aaron. May God bless your family with the peace that you need to get through this difficult time. His heroism will not be forgotten.

It has almost been a year since your passing and there is not a day or moment that goes by that I do not think of you! I remember the day mom brought you home and placed you in my lap. You were so small and wonderful; you peed on my lap.
Little did I know then that you would be my constant companion though out life, my rock at times, my sounding board, and my best friend. We have seen each other through many difficult times and trials. I can not imagine growing older without you being there. And I can not imagine family holidays without you. I just can not imagine my life without you in it
I love you, I am proud of you always, and I will miss you until the day we meet again.
I love you!!!!!

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Mariah,
We were devastated to learn about Aaron from Lynnda and Bruce when they were here on Sunday after the service. It would have been my honor to attend and pay tribute to Aaron for his dedication and commitment and sacrifice, and to personally extend my deepest sympathies to you, Richard, and your families. You and Aaron were so faithful to come to the Easter Picnic years ago; it was our pleasure to come to know you as polite, quiet, beautiful and mature young people who seemed glad to know your mother's birth family. My heart goes out to you and Richard and your families for this terrible loss.

“Soldier”
To Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

It is saddening to see someones hopes and dreams go unfulfilled, to see people lose a loved one to the ultimate sacrifice and watch the persons'life fade away into oblivion...to a point. And from that point, in the case of Aaron and thousands like him, it is uplifting to know he went down fighting the good fight. Very little is certain in this world, including what is to come in Iraq and in the war on Terror. In the midst of all the chaos there are those of us that choose to make a stand,to fight and to make our own destiny. I knew Aaron for a short time in school and I didn't know him well, but I knew him well enough to know he was not the kind of person to take lightly. He was clever, he was the kind of friend most people would like to have and he was tough. When the dust settles and all is done, Aaron chose his path and died an honorable death. When you break life down in terms of value, no one could reasonably ask for more. I salute you my friend, and you will live on through me.

I worked with Aaron at Steward's Hardware. He was one of a kind. I remember one Sunday morning my mom was visiting me and we were shopping, it was raining and early. We went to the car and we had a flat, not knowing how to change it, I called Aaron for help because I knew I could count on him. He showed up at 10:00 am no questions asked and changed our tire. You could tell he just woke up. He had no expectaions of anything in return. This is an example of his character, his dedication and selflessness is to be admired. My deepest sympathies to his family. I also wish to extend my thanks to him for giving the ultimate sacrafice so others may live.

Mariah. I was told many years ago after your birth that Susie picked the name because she loved the song "They call the wind Mariah," and it meant God is with you. Aaron I know means the highest mountain, symbolic of strength. When I spoke with one of the officers from his Division Saturday, it was about the tradition and history of his Battalion, and the motto they carry "First To Cross," probably dating back to their legacy in World War II when Allied troops approached the Rhine River into Germany. They were to secure the Remagan Bridge the Germans were trying to blow up. In fact he told me there is a stone at their headquarters in Germany with "Remagan" on it, presumably from the bridge that was so key to entering Germany and achieve the final victory. That though was Charlie's war, and Mr. Strahan's, whom I was honored to meet Saturday.
Aaron's was a different type of war. Of Susie's children, he was the "first to cross" and I believe achieve victory over death. I for some reason envisioned your mother after hearing of Aaron's departure from this world, the sweet Susie I grew up knowing, all the fun times Trey and I had with her, and Mary and Charlie. I can picture her reaching down with a soft smile, taking Aaron by the hands, and raising him up to be with her, and Mary, Charlie, Dora, Mamie, and even my own mother, who Susie would spend hours with at Neiman's and Northpark when we were kids, as they both loved to shop together. I recall times with Susie became less frequent as she got older, recalling being gone once to a Beach Boys concert, the boys always showing an interest, even when she visited us in Abilene. Susie never chased the boys though. She didn't have to. They seemed to chase her. I recall waiting in the Luau Room at Love Field with Marry and Charlie, waiting on her to fly in from Stephens College in Missouri. Even though she was growing up faster than Trey and I, she aways found time for us, always for family, always caring. And always so full of class. Trey recalls her and George when they came to New York while he was living there, and going out to dinner, the last time he saw her, but a pleasant one to remember. I look at her children and know she would be proud. Faith tells me Aaron has joined her now, and the separation is only for a short time while we finish our business here on this earth. So do not despair too much. They just go before us to prepare the way. As my mother told me before she passed on Christmas morning in '92, when she said, "I'll be watching. Talk to me when you need to and I'll listen, even if you don't hear when I talk back. You'll know though, you'll feel it in your heart." I'm sure Susie is doing the same, and would say, "Aaron's okay, and all will be okay." That's the Susie I grew up knowing. We never got to spend the time with you, Aaron, and Richard that we should have, but your still in our hearts. I'll never forget Aaron riding his bike at Mary's, her trying to keep an eye on him, or Richard and Tiffany, my daughter, playing in Mary's backyard. And as I said Saturday, I will never forget the first time I met you, at about two or three yers old. Cute as a bug, playing with Sugar. Times have passed, all got older, but never forget we loved your mom, and love you guys. Whenever in need, you know how to get in touch. As Lula taught me, you always be there for family, so we will be if you need us. I shall never forget the grown young Aaron at Mary's funeral. We had a wonderful visit. I knew from what he said he was going to end up in Iraq. He made a proud and honorable soldier. And he knew his history, which naturally inspired me as a teacher of such. His story will be passed on, to those I teach, as a lesson of a true American hero. Stay strong and have faith in the promise you will see him again one day.Your always in our heart.

Although I hadn't seen Aaron in 20 years, I still remember that little blonde haired wild man waiting patiently for church* to end so we could play outside. The Aaron I knew was one of a kind, and will truly be missed. I wish I had a chance to know him as a man.
My heart goes out to Aaron’s family for their loss. Aaron was a great guy and his memory will be with us forever.

I did not know Aaron but he will now forever be a part of my life. On Christmas I received a silver dog tag left blank for me to have engraved with whatever I chose. As a veteran myself I wanted to do something to help honor and remember those that gave there all for us back home. I decided to put the name of a soldier on It that lost his life over there on that particular day, which I'm truly sorry led me to Aaron. Every day now I see and feel that tag around my neck and think about Aaron and what he and his comrades have done for me and are great country, and It inspires me to try to become a better person myself.
Thank you Aaron Preston, rest in peace now my freind.
