Mike,

"So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion;
respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life..........

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled
with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep
and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home. "

Knowing and working with you at Fort Knox allows me to know the man. I remember going and learning that you volunteered to follow. I know you are fine, but I just wanted to say thanks for being you and allowing me to know you brother. When I come back to KY I will pay you a visit and say hello.

RIP Maj Mundell. I sat with you at the RCT5 ops Intel briefs that year and had many interactions both inside and outside the wire. I remember you pushing on even after you got shot. The day you gave all I was there with two of my EOD teams and when I found out it was you I nearly broke down at the site. In five tours as a Marine you still standout as one of the most courageous and humble soldiers I've ever known. God grant your family peace and confort. We remember. Semper Fi. MGySgt Gravley

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

December 22, 2007

my name is Julie, I have a restaurant in warminster, pennsylvania called Little Leo's Cafe. Back in May I started a display at my restaurant. We put up red, white and blue stars with the names of all the soldiers killed in the middle east since 2001. Unfortunately, I ran out of room on my walls for all of the stars so I am going to be taking it down very soon, but tonight I went to my restaurant to do some work and I noticed that I had a star stuck to my hair, so I took it off and it happened to have the name Michael L. Mundell, Brandenburg, KY. So I took it home with me and I researched the name on the internet and found this site. I call him my little angel. I just want to let the family know that somewhere in pennsylvania, someone who has never heard of Michael L. Mundell will now be praying for him. God bless your family during this holiday season. My prayers and thoughts are with you. Thank you for your sacrifice for my freedom.

August 15, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Mrs. Mundell and family,
I am writing from Washington & Jefferson College to express my sincere sympathies and to thank you and your family for your sacrifice to our nation. I have alerted Mike's classmates and wish you to know that we will honor Mike this year at Homecoming on October 5th. I have asked one of his classmates who also served in the Army to speak at that service. Please, let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to share to make this service reflect Mike's life and personality. My prayers are with all of you and on behalf of his alma mater you have our deepest sympathy and gratitude.

To the family of Mike Mundell: My name is Helmer Johnson. I was Mike's roommate in his first year of college at Waynesburg College. I am so very sorry to hear of your loss. While we were at Waynesburg College for only one year, I came to know Mike as a great friend. I am sorry that I had lost touch with him over the years. I know that Mike was a fine husband, father and soldier, because he was a fine person. It was my pleasure to have experienced my first year away from home with a person of the caliber that Mike was. We were the only freshman roommates that did not change on the fifth floor at Martin Hall. Mike often talked about how much he loved the army and how he wanted to serve his country as a soldier. I am a better person today, as an ordained minister, because of having know Mike even for such a short time in my young life. The world will be abit darker without that smile that was almost always on his face. May the Lord bless you during this difficult time. You, and Mike's fellow soldiers are always in my prayers.

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

"MeditationTeacher" Books For Soldiers Volunteer

January 29, 2007

To Mike's Family,

I am the Books For Soldiers volunteer mentioned by Julie below. I had sent a care package of books to Mike and his group. He sent me a thank you letter dated Christmas Day, 2006. We do not always get thank letters (we certainly don't expect them), and I thought it was incredibly thoughtful for him to take some time on Christmas Day to write a letter to someone he had never met.

It was a gut-wrenching shock to realize later when Books for Soldiers posted a notice about his death that he had already died by the time I had received his letter.

I am so sorry for your loss. He was clearly a kind gentleman.

I still have his Christmas Day letter (which is longer than the short excerpt quoted below) & if you would like me to send it on to your family, please let Julie, the BFS moderator, know what address I should send it to. I know he was not with you this past Christmas, and maybe having this letter will help him be with you in the future Christmases...

My condolences for your family's loss. You are in my prayers.

I'd like to share here my blog entry of the day that I found out about Mike's loss... Rest in peace my friend and God hold you and those you love forever in his arms...

Losing a friend... Delta, we love you
I came online this morning thinking that I might have a bit of fun, catch up with some friends and get the general news from the regulars in the chatroom as I usually do on a Friday… I opened Yahoo only to have my heart break... There, sitting in the offline message box were two horrible messages telling me the news that I didn’t want to see, didn’t want to believe and still just can’t absorb… DeltaWing was dead, killed in a roadside bombing in Iraq… I’m 46 years old so I know about war, I know about death, and I know about loss but no matter how much I may already know I am never prepared to lose people I care for, especially wonderfully kind, courageous loving souls that are already far too rare on this world we’ve created. Sense can never be made of the senseless…. This is my tribute to you Mike. To those of us who were given the blessing to know you we thank you for your smiles, your words, your humor, your patience, your time, your efforts, your love and your life. You filled our hearts and minds with your very essence by living as a man who was always true to himself and those who came into his life. Thank you Mike, our hearts may be breaking but that’s because they’re now making room for you to live on in them permanently. God bless you. We love you.

To Mike's family,

I'm one of the website administrators at Books for Soldiers. Mike had contacted us to request books and support for his soldiers, and several of our volunteers responded.

In a Christmas letter to one of our volunteers, Mike wrote "The worst thing for a soldier to think is that he is forgotten. We know that it isn't so!" Even now, Mike will never be forgotten. His caring and professionalism came through loud and clear, and we'll always remember him as "one of ours."

My heartfelt condolences to Mike's family on behalf of Books for Soldiers. We're so very sorry for your loss.

Mike Mundell was a soldier I never met face to face, but shared a common bond with over a period of time from my side of the world as we shared our military history. His devotion to his Country and his sense of duty left me in awe, and he paid the ultimate sacrifice for his beliefs. Mike, take the magic orange with you and may God keep you safely forever in the palm of his hand. I shall miss our chats.

In my earlier entry, I realize I failed to identify myself in relation to Mike as I just went on the assumption that everyone would know and then realized that they may not. So, as an addendum, I'd like to add that I am Mike's wife. His children are Erica-17, Ryan-14, Zach-13 and Dale-11. Again, thanks so much to everyone for their words of encouragement, thoughtfulness and and prayers. Keep the prayers coming, please. We can definitely use them. Take care and God bless.

I met Michael when he first moved to Canonsburg. He always dreamed of being a soldier and serving our country. I haven't seen Michael since high school but was kept up to date by his Father. To all of his family, my deepest condolences. We will all miss him.

I would like to thank everyone so very much for their thoughts, prayers and support. Yes, this is the most difficult time of my family's life. I know we will get through it somehow, but also with continued prayers. You can't know how much we appreciate it from all of you. To those of you who have also lost loved ones like this, my heart and thoughts and prayers go out to you, too. May God help in your healing as I know he will in ours. Just reading all of these kind words from everyone makes me know that what I always believed and told Mike was true, "people are truly good." Thank you again and we love you all.

Though I haven't seen Mike since high school, I'm extremely proud of him and the path he chose in life. We used to sit at the lunch table and sing Beach Boys songs, and now when I hear those songs they will remind me of Mike and the sacrifice he made. May God bless & protect his family.

My heart is heavy hearing of the news of the passing of MAJ Mundell. I have not know him for that long, but it doesn't take long to recognize a hard working soldier and father.

I meet him at Ft. Benning in January 06 and worked with him up until he left Ft. Bragg sometime before I deployed to Iraq in April of 2006. He constantly talked about his family and his kids. I'm sure he will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

It was an honor to serve with him and know him even if it was for a short time. He will be missed and my prayers go out to his family and friends.

I worked with Mike and will miss his presence. He was a man who welcomed me to the job and treated me like a friend at a time when we barely knew each other. After four years of working with Mike I feel that a part of the team is forever, and irreplacibly, missing. The loss of Mike lessens us all and we are poorer for his absence.

I never met Mike in person only by the Internet and he was a good man. I am sure you will miss him a lot and times are bad right now. He was doing his job to keep us safe. I ask him what they needed most over there and he said cheese we can't get it here, so I sent him cheese and other goodies. He wrote me a very nice letter and I have it in a safe place to keep. I will miss him as well.

You entire family will be grieving as you read this guest book. I did not know Michael, but I know who he is. He is the moving force who helped the other soldiers find their home, and directed others to find their place. He was and is the Army, and all the other services, who makes this work. My son Benjamin C. Schuster, was killed in action in Ar Ramadi Iraq on February 25th, 2006. We know how the moments after break your heart, and how your life is never the same. We also know how the love of other survivors makes things possible. Michael would want you to live well and prosper until you join him again. We believe you can.

My Deepest and most heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family of Maj. Michael Lewis Mundell, with much humble gratitude, for his many years of service to our country.
The price this Brave Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.
There is so much thanks to be given, to these heroes, for their Courage, Dedication and Service.

May Michael rest safely in God's Care and may God's Loving Peace and Comfort be with the Mundell family.
I am the sister of such a young hero, who made the Ultimate Sacrifice in Vietnam, many years ago.

and He shall strengthen your heart"

May the Peace of God and the memories of Michael,
remain in your heart always.
May this give you comfort and strength through the difficult days ahead.
