The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To Ian,
I will always remember how full of life you were, (and full of piss and vinegar as your Grandma would of said). I will always remember the last time I saw you, we were in D.C. with Angel and Isabelle, we had so much fun, so many laughs and I will always remember the day fondly with Isabelle as the "day we almost got arrested", Ha Ha. You were a shining light in all our lives, your light will always shine on in Lillian. You are a hero to all of us and I am proud to call you my nephew. I know your light shines down on us still and always will.

If you?re reading this
My momma is sitting there
Looks like I only got a one way ticket over here
I sure wish I could give you one more kiss
War was just a game we played when we were kids
Well I?m laying down my gun
I?m hanging up my boots
I?m up here with God
And we?re both watching over you

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul
Is where my momma always prayed where it would go.
If you?re reading this I?m already home.

If you?re reading this
Half way around the world
I won?t be there to see the birth of our little girl
I hope she looks like you
I hope she fights like me
Stand up for the innocent and the weak
I?m laying down my gun
Hanging up my boots
Tell dad I don?t regret that id follow in his shoes

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul is where my momma always prayed where it would go
If you?re reading this, I?m already home

If you?re reading this, there is going to come a day
You move on and find someone else and that?s okay
Just remember this
I?m in a better place
Soldiers live in peace and angels sing amazing grace

So lay me down
In that open field out on the edge of town
And know my soul is where my momma prayed where that it would go
If you?re reading this
If you?re reading this
I?m already home

I cried the day I heard about you. I had just come off of my mission when we heard that some guys from 2-7 got hit. My immmediate thought was of you. I want to cry now thinking about that day. My heart goes out to your wife and loved ones left behind. We didn't know eachother well and only exchanged a few words in Kuwait. We knew what we were going to do. We were trained to accomplish our mission and to never quit. You will always be in my heart and mind. I will see you again one day brother, and when we do I know we will have an understanding that many won't. Why we did it? Miss you man. Wish you were still here.

July 31, 2007

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers

Soldiers write history, we pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still

We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever

Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away

Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go

We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light

Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray

Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound

Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

Today from the comfort of my Lenexa home I heard the thunder of motorcycles as they roared to and from the cemetary near me. I looked out the window and noticed that on the back of each bike there flew an American flag. That is what brought me to this site.

After 20 years of seeing processions to and from I often don't give a second glance any more. I should. But this one was different. It pulled me outside to see the long line of people who came out to honor this loved one.

Was it Ian? I can't say for sure. But I know in my heart your Ian led an amazing life and will be showered with love and blessings in his passing as he was when he walked among us.

To the family and friends of fallen hero Ian Christian Anderson:

I never had the opportunity to know your loved one but I felt compelled to send you a message. There aren't any words that I can say that will take your pain away. My family and I will forever be grateful to Mr. Anderson and all the other soldiers that have so willingly given their life so that we can be free. On Memorial Day, 2002, President George W. Bush was giving a speech from the Normandy American Cemetary. I heard parts of this speech and part of it has always stuck with me. I would like to quote it to you. "Our wars have won for us every hour we live in freedom. Our wars have taken from us the men and women we honor today, and every hour of the lifetimes they had hoped to live."

In the days to come and your grief seems unbearable, remember the good times you had and know that your loved one will always be with you.

God Bless!

To Ian Anderson's family:

As a former Prairie Village resident, Ian's passing brought the war closer to home. Ian is truly a hero to me as an older father of 2 girls, age 7 and 4. My heart goes out to all of you. It is Ian and fellow US military personnel like Ian to whom we owe a huge amount of gratitude. I wish I had half the courage that these boys have while performing valiantly to preserve our freedoms. We will be eternally grateful for Ian's sacrifice.

To Ian's wife -- Please, if there is any way that my wife Ruthanne and I can help, don't hesitate to contact us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and with Ian.

Suzzy and family,
I remember how big of a smile you had on your face the day you told all of us you would be marrying Ian. This memory goes along with all of those that were to follow. You gave birth to a beautiful baby girl and have since become a strong, wonderful woman. Ian will watch over you all the days of your life. When I think about Ian I will be able to remember suzzy's smile of how happy she was and how much the both of you have given for this country! Please let me know if you need anything! (p.s. The minsky's crew is keeping you in our thoughts and prayers)

Every year for the past 3 years during the holidays, I have put american flags in my front yard to
honor the fallen heros like Ian.
In 2004 I put up 1200 flags.
In 2005 I put up 2000 flags.
This year I put up almost 3000.
When I read about your son I put
up a special flag in his honor.
The fact that Ian grew up in the
same city and attended the same
high school as I did brought the reality of this war close to home.
In the time that I have done this
I have realized that many many people are indebted to people like Ian for what they have sacrificed. I have seen veterans come by my house and watch in
silence at the flags and how each
one represents a brave human life.
I wish you all peace during this
trying time. Words can't express
the gratitude that I and millions
of other americans have for what
Ian did. Take care and god bless.
