I thought about Kevin today as I do every Memorial Day. I knew Kevin as the little kid that came by a dental office his mom and worked at. My heart is always heavy when I remember how short his life was cut, and the heartache his parents must feel every day. He will always be a hero in my heart.

Most days of the week I walk my dog in Seven Gables park past Kevin's memorial. I've often paused to wonder about him. We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. Kevin, what else can I say that I haven't already told you a million times. Your legacy will live on forever, and you made a tremendous difference on so many many lives. Sometimes I wish you took my advice and crashed in Mahmudiyah instead of going back to the Lute to "sleep in your own bed". I am so sorry for your loss. I served with Cpt. Landeck in D co. I didnt know him to well but what I remember of him, was that he was a funny guy. He used to joke about the most ridiculouse things. I wasnt in his platoon but he still took the time to teach me how to properly use a radio when we went to a range before we deployed. He was truely an amazeing person.

I am one of the soldiers who served with CPT Landeck in IRaq. I am sorry for your lose. Kevin was a great man and will never bee forgotton by anyone on the MITT Platoon. He was the one that kept us alive and kept us going everyday. He was a role model to all of us and his wisdomwill never be forgotton. Liz talked about how you gathered together with others to honor Kevin's memory at this anniversary of his death. Once again, I thank you for raising such a fine young man and I am so sorry that you have lost him; I am so indebted to him for giving his life for my freedom. My family experienced had a significant (to say the least) loss 3 years ago. I can tell you that although the pain never goes away, it does become less acute. The best way to honor our loved ones is to never let their memory die; say their name, tell the stories about them growing up, laugh, and cry. Dear Landeck Family,
I don't know where to start, for I am a little late with this entry. I have had a hard time contemplating to write to you anything about Kevin, for in a way, I am afraid that this will be the last goodbye. I entered ROTC program the same time Kevin did, although at a different school, at a different state. I met Kevin in FT. Lewis in 03 during the Iraqi Invasion, and immediately became friends. We were bunkmates for a month we spent in FT Lewis, and grew close, and even got into trouble numerous times before getting out of there. We laughed together, complained together and sweat together. Both of us came to a conclusion that Infantry was the way to go and that both of us would benefit the American people this way, with our "expertise". I don't know if it was faith or what not, but both of us were selected for Infantry and then FT. Drum. We ended up together in Ft Benning, going to all the schools almost at the same time. OBC, Ranger School, Airborne School, all those with just a week or two apart. Kevin lived in the building next to me, so it was just a short walk away. After I got into a car accident in GA, Kevin was the person to pick me up from Hospital, and treat me to some Chicken Nuggets. I remember this day clearly and there was no other person in the world that could make me laugh in as difficult situation. We did things for each other without complaint. He helped me find my new car and made the process painless and with his constant quick witted responses made everything more enjoyable. I picked him up from Ranger School a few times and drove him around to get things done, that was my benefit of being Kevin's friend. Up at FT. Drum he made an excellent roomate while Bethany was at her OBC. Time at FT. Drum went quick and was pretty enjoyable with Kevin around. Whenever I needed something, he was the first person to volunteer his services with no complaint. Every day up until my deployment to Afghanistan, Kevin and I had lunch and enjoyed each others company. We kept e-mailing each other and never talked about deployment issues, just issues that we'd have to deal with when we get home. He expressed sorrow for my 4 month extension, but I only worried about him since he was in a worse place than I ever was. What made this relationship unique was our religion. I am a Bosnian Muslim and Kevin was a Christian. We never talked about religion as much, because I wanted to focus on things that we had in common and not things that were different. He once told me that due to our friendship, he understood Islam more than the next guy, and he appreciated the customs more. Due to this, he mentioned, he was able to seperate the Terrorists from Muslims. Kevin was and still is a good natured man, who cared about his fellow humans. I found out about his death via e-mail. At first I didn't take it seriously, but I read into it more and more and realized that my brother was dead. It hit me like a brick, and I isolated myself from everything around me. I mourned him as much as I could, but then I promised myself that I will do my best to mourn him and celebrate his life the way Kevin would want me to. I have to complete my mission, for that is what he wanted. "Just get your boys back home OS, that's all I can say"
I will miss him as a friend and as a brother.

To the family of Capt. Kevin Landeck,
I'm sorry for your loss. I'm a 1996 grad of WWSHS, and while I don't know if I ever met Kevin or not all of my friends from the classes of '98 and '99 who did spoke well of him. I'm in the Army Reserves as part of the Chaplain Candidate program, and God willing after my ordination as a priest I will be able to serve heroes like Kevin as an active duty Army Chaplain. It was an honor to be able to pray for Kevin at Mass at St Michael's on Sunday and here at the seminary in Mundelein on Monday.

To Bethany, Rich, Vicki, and Jenny. Kevin was a Husband, a son, and a brother. Just know that Kevin past on doing what he loved and doing more importantly what he believed in. I can never express my deepest sorrows nor the sorrows from a grateful nation just quite enough. I am at a loss for words. I was so saddened to hear of another soldier gone. But, it was not just any soldier. He was from Wheaton. When I finally put two and two together I realized this was Jennifer's brother. The same brother she was boastfully telling me how he just got married. You see we ran into each other at petland. She was so excited to catch up on my boys. She wanted to know how they were. Please accept our deepest sympathy's. Our thoughts and prayers go with your family.

Please know through your faith that you have touched so many people! God bless you all as you suffer at this time. He is there, watching over you-an angel has his wings. Losing a child, a husband is something I can't fathom, and I'm so sorry for you having to lose dear Kevin. The stories I've heard about him from my brother are wonderful stories and I pray that through your sorrow you'll find the peace that you need to get through this awful time!
