Dropped my retirement papers today. Can't believe it's coming to an end. It seems like a million years ago I joined the Corps, but only yesterday that I was with you and all the fellas walking those dark grim streets. Raise a glass with Babb and Hines the next time you see them. Miss you guys.

Only a couple more years of the Corps until I can retire my friend. Seems like time is leaving us behind, but the memories remain. You're always the first one I think of when February rolls in with the cold days of winter and those bleak streets of Fallujah. Give the rest of the guys my regards. I'll tip a drink to you all.

Thought of you on that fateful day's anniversary as I do every year, and was going to call Bren, but time slipped away. A few days later she accidentally sent me a text message meant for someone else. Coincidence? Nah. I believe that was you nudging me to say hello to my sweet friend and let her know she and you are always in my thoughts and prayers. And I'm forever grateful to you and the family for the sacrifice you made for us. Will forever wear a virtual yellow ribbon for you, Matthew. Happy Heavenly Valentine's Day.

On August 21, 2010, in Osage Beach, Missouri, I participated in the "Run for the Fallen". I was given a badge to wear that indicated that I participated in memory of Lance Cpl. Matthew Pathenos. I wrote on my Facebook page that day that this was the most meaningful thing I have ever done in my life. Matt was a great friend of mine for many years... To know and enjoy Matt's presence was a blessing and I will never forget the great moments we had together. Every time I shoot a round of golf, play T-Woods, or bowl a few frames I remember you. I still can hardly compose my thoughts when facing the fact that this is a fact and I'm actually talking to a fallen friend... it's truly heart breaking... I still miss you, but I know you've been there with me... three years has taught me a lot, and you've joined me and some amazing times in some beautiful places I've been since I've last seen you... I will miss you always, as long as I live you shall be remembered... R.I.P. Matthew from Mark...

The Souls of the Soldiers

Our Loved One's has follow
God's lovely rainbow in the

-To the Family and Friends of my MARINE Brother,
I stumbled upon this when I read Pathenos name on a MySpace pagehttp://www.myspace.com/marinesmemorial. I had the honor and pleasure of learning from and serving with Pathenos in Iraq from March '03-Aug '03 in the Mortars section of Echo Co. 2/5 and again in Ar Ramadi from Sept '04-Mar '05 as he made his transition to Armorer. I had no idea he had died. My name is Michael A. Padilla and I'm 26 years old from Chicago, Il. I had been in the Marines for only about 6 months when I met Pathenos in Iraq. Being a Junior Marine in was pretty overwhelming but the Marines in my section, including Pathenos helped me make it through alive. He was a very witty and funny and intelligent guy and his trademark smirk was never far from his face. I remeber laying on a cot talking about baseball and music with him in the dark of an abandoned potato factory in Northern Iraq, and many Spades games between he and I and Calu and Konkol and Rivet and many others...I remember coming back to California and giving him crap about his worn-out Cardinals hat and his Birkenstocks...I could go on but I know that you all probably know a lot of this but I just wanted to talk for a few about what I remember him for. Well I'm sorry for his loss everyone. He is missed.-Michael A Padilla-Chicago [email protected]

Wow! I just learned of Matt's death while reviewing a list on CNN.com of those that had died, my jaw hit the floor. I served alongside Matt in 3rd Bn, 24th Marines until Feb 2006 when I was discharged. He was always very cheerful and good at making us laugh. His character and personality will always be missed, it was a pleasure to serve alongside of him.

I attended Matt's funeral 2 days after my dad's death. Being at Jefferson Barracks visiting dad's grave, looking out over all of the headstones, reminds me that we all have a list of people to thank for our freedom. Unfortunately, the list grows, and will continue to grow forever. Matt put himself between me and people that hate me, and he gave his life to protect me. When I read about a police officer or firefighter that died in the line of duty, I think of Matt and those who loved him, and those that he loved. I am grateful for those who serve, and proud to live in a country that was built by heroes. I'm sorry he's gone and proud to have met him. Matt lives on forever.

Febraury 17th 2007, I will never forget that day. Family and friends of Matt were saying their final good-byes. We were there with the PGR. It was so cold that day, I was sure I was going to have frost bite. My feet and hands were hurting so bad, I was shaking so hard. Before that day, when the weather was bad, I would think to myself "our military don't have the option of giving up" and then I stay. I started praying to Matt Pathenos to give me the strength to stay in the flag line. I stayed to the end but when the services were over Don got me to the truck to warm up while he helped put the PGR American Flags away. When I got in the truck I realized my feet and hands did not hurt, I thought I was feeling nothing, I was past the point of frostbite. I took my gloves off and went to put my hands on a warm part of my body. They were not cold, they were warm. Your Matty answered my prayers that day, he gave me the strength, he had God warm my hands and feet.
Before that day Matthew Pathenos was the boy who's picture was always next to his brother's at a parade. 2/17/07 Matt gave me a memory of him which I will never forget. When it is very cold out, I know Matt is with me keeping me safe and warm.
Thank you for raising such a fine man. We will never forget Matt.
They gave his tomorrows for our todays. May we never take our todays for granted.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I hung out with Matt one time. What a GREAT and AWESOME man! Such a cool person! I was visiting from Las Vegas and I couldn't tell you how open and hospitable he was to me, the SECOND he met me. When I heard the news, I was shocked, of course, like everyone else, but I just couldn't believe it. This kid, this man who was SO nice, talking to me, a kid that he JUST met and being so genuine and generous to me, and he had taken me to Jack in the Box with him, just him and I. It stands out and I remember because it was really the only time that it was just he and I. But that's the thing, I had JUST met this man, and he was so kind and hospitable as well, he bought me some food at Jack in the Box, I mean really, what people that you JUST meet will be so nice to you and take you places and THEN pay for YOUR food for you. That's the memory that I wanted to share with you, I know it may not seem like huge memory but it meant a lot to me. I won't forget him or his nice and kind attitude, and I know those who were blessed enough to experience more of his presence and memories won't either. The memory that we shared may not be so significant or remembered by him, but it had an impact on me that I'll always remember (this was in 2005). It was, indeed, short and sweet, but it will NEVER be forgotten.
Rest in peace, Matt. You will be FOREVER remembered and missed! Thanks for being such a good, caring, nice, and kind person to ALL people you met, whether stranger or not! Everyone is celebrating your life and the people you touched in it!

“Paid in Full”
To Honor The Service of Fallen and Injured Marines
Marines through and through, they paid the price
Six thousand miles away, we live the life
For which they paid with their blood, spirits and bodies
We will never forget what they paid in full
We hope and we pray that somehow their loved ones find comfort
In God, in the flag, in the memory of their loved ones’ bravery
They’re gone now but we see them still…proud, strong, willing
Covering each other’s backs… courageous, moving forward
What kind of love did they have for us to be willing
To give it all for the Black, White, Jew, Christian, Muslim?
We don’t comprehend but we honor you now and forever
You are Our Marines…some living…some not
Forever in our hearts we will cherish your lives
Lives too short yet immortal they’ll be
Highest brotherhood of the Few, the Proud
They stand at attention, and we gaze with awe
Some know their names not, but our admiration for them
Flows limitless within us, between us
They sacrificed their limbs or their lives
Freedom still rings, a soft sound across the miles
It tolls slowly; all of creation takes note
Of the lives that were lost for people unknown
Out of sight but not lost; forever among us
The starched blues marching straight
Toward the place where we will meet them
Many years from now…how we loved them…
Well done beloved Brothers and Sisters…You’ve paid it in full
Always Faithful Marines, You Have Paid it in Full

Pathenos Family
Hello, I worked with Matt for a short time at Stonewolf golf course. What a great personality he possessed. Always in a good mood, cheerful, and a great pleasure to be around. I am deeply priveleged to have called Matt a friend. In your time of loss, I want you to know that I believe he is in good hands. He was very proud of his Greek Orthodox roots, and would share his faith with anyone who would listen. Both myself and my family will be praying for Matt and your family. Matt was a great guy who was one of the bravest people I know. He was doing what he said he wanted to do...Serve his country, and help those who could not help themselves. He has been taken from us at a young age, but the memories I have of him will stay with me forever. May God bless your family and help you through this difficult time. You will be in our prayers!

Gus and family,
I am deeply sorry for the loss of your son Matthew. I wish you all the strenght in the world to make it through this difficult time. You may not remeber who I am, but (Gus) you were my boss when I worked at Pantera's Pizza. If your son was anything like you, I know he had to have been a kind hearted person who loved to make people laugh. Time may not heal all the grief you and your family feel from this time forword but may it somehow lead you on a road to recovery and prepare you for a life that let's you somehow remember and cherish the days, months and years of joy and love you shared in his precence.
With all of my sympathy and then some.

Our hearts go out to you. We are very close to one of Matt's fellow Marines, Steve Petersen. They were in the same unit. He has written me of the death of Matt and told me of the service the unit had for him. How sad they are. They have become as close as a family. They are good friends. It is so wrong that our beautiful young men have to face death; but clearly they have a noble purpose to life. Matt obviously lived a dedicated and honorable life. Our prayers today are for your family. Josephine and Richard Weil

Heaven's Call
Heaven called and you were taken
So young to go, to young to know
The call of heaven did not wait
Your time here a short stay
You were called away
To be part of God’s everlasting garden
Borrowed seed from the Master
A small little bud that graced us with your beauty
Now returned upon heaven’s call
A finely chosen rose
Taken before it bloomed
Before your beauty had time to unfold
He is the Gardner and you his prize winning bud
Perhaps He seen a storm that you could not with stand
So he picked you before the wind would fall
The memories forever etched in our hearts
Our little bud now blooms
With the angels up on high

Matt was always charming, funny, sweet, honest, and very down to earth. He carried this sense of pride with him-- the kind that others wished they had--and he walked with his head held high. I admired these qualities tremendously. I will always remember Matt as a great gentleman. I remeber my freshman year, Matt and his friend Mike took me to homecoming together- Matt was the first to open doors and offer me his coat when he thought I was cold. I cry knowing he won't be able to spead even more joy to all the people who knew him- But I am so thankful for his time on Earth. To his parents, you should be so very proud of him and his accomplishments. I will forever keep you in my prayers.

Matt~ you were such a breath of fresh air, you always made everyone feel so wanted and good about themselves no matter what they looked like, talked like, or if they weren't "so popular" in high school, when I heard of this news I could not believe it. You are a hero to all of us, and my love and prayers is reached out to your family in their time or greif and sadness. It is hard to accept that you made it home before any of us, but we all know you are in a better place now, and all we can do now is wait and dream about the times when we will all be together again. Rest in peace my old friend. I'll be seeing you! God bless!
