Hello SFC Kiernan. I just want to keep your memory alive. I miss you still. It has almost been 13 years ago since we lost you. I remember everything that you said at the mess hall at Camp Victory the day before you died. I miss you!!! I know that you are inna better place. You kept me alive for four tours in Iraq. We fought the fight there but in the end we left silently. ISIS has taken that country, every bit of ground we fought for. I can only hope and pray that in the end democracy will prevail. They say we fought for freedom but in the end we fought for each other. Your memory will never die. I will not let them forget why we fight.

Hey Chris....I visit this page often, its still hard for me to post.....of all experiences through 8 years of active duty, and 5 years of national guard, this is by far the toughest for me. Thankfully i somehow managed to be blessed with a wife who does her best to understand why this is so hard for me to talk about, to this day. We are planning a trip to see you finally, I apologize it's taken me so long.

To the family of one of the finest Soldier and individual I had the pleasure to serve with. I have so many memories of Chris. I think of him often, a plaque hangs in my office today that he and the other drivers gave me, it has words from him and signature. It is the only one I have in my office from a 22 year career. He was my driver for 18 months, we talked about many subjects, learning so much about him while providing me a different opinion for myself. I wish had I had an opportunity to visit with again.

I can't believe that it has been 8 years since you were taken from us. I know that you are in a better place watching over us. I miss you a lot. I still think of you almost everyday. I will never really understand that war or why we were over there. You will always be my brother in arms. I remember the nights on CQ that we spent together before we deployed in 2004. You took the time to teach me all about our tank. You believed in me and that means everything. I am sorry but this is kind of hard to write. You will never be forgotten. I remember the last time that I saw you at the mess hall at Camp Victory. It was the day before you were killed. We ate lunch together and you told me to stay safe. That was the last time I got to see you. You were the best Tank Commander that I have ever known. I remember when you shot Top Tank during gunnery before we deployed in 2006. I remember the nickname that you gave me. Diggedy. Thank you for being who you are. You will never be forgotten.

I served with SSG Kirenan in B 2-12 Cav. I remember, and still have in my AKO mailbox, the message he sent back after hearing I made SGT. After a break in service, and reenlisting in the Ky ARNG, I find myself sitting in Baghdad, Iraq, anxiously waiting for mission's end. The memory of Fathead will never fade, nor will the impression he made on me when I worked for him. Everything from his stories, his mentorship, all the way to remembering how I NEVER saw him without a lipfull of Copenhagen....even for PT in the mornings!
All the stories and memories posted here just confirm what we already knew....we lost a great soldier, and even better friend.

I've just learned a few days ago about Chris. It was an unbelievable news. I'd never thought that I was going to get news like this from soldiers which either worked with me or under my command. It hurt me very much.
Chris Kiernan was like a son to me Nd loved him very much. We'd spent a lot of times together, whether it was in Fort Knox, KY, Fort Hood, TX, or during our deployment to Bosnia back in 1999.
He was a "HARD WORKING" Soldier. A very likable soldier and person. With a great personality and sense of humor. I can't find words to express myself on how he was. Overall, he was one of the best soldiers I'd met during my time in the US Army.
From the bottom of my heart and very humbly, I express my sincere belated condolences to the Kiernan family and to his wife, Donna.
May God bless you all and give you all the necessary strength to deal with these hard times in you loss of Chris.

Dear Donna, I met you many times at BBQ's and other various functions. SSG Kiernan was my first supervisor when I got out to Ft. Hood back in Feb 1999. I served with him in mulitple units to include A co. 2-12 CAV and in 1-5 CAV as well. The first thing Chris told me when he picked me up was the phraze, " 6...12...22... 100 points and no crew cuts". I remember these words even to today. He was very intrumental in my development throughout the army and he meant very much to me as a friend. I remember seeing him brushing his teeth and shaving the morning that he lost his life and he was always just so damn motovating. Chris passing hit me very hard and I just want to say that I was very lucky to have had him as a mentor in my life. I know Chris is still looking down on all of us and ensuring that we are all safe and happy in all that we do in life.

I only knew SSG Kiernan for seven months while we served together stationed at FOB Falcon. I received debriefs from each incoming patrol, and this is how I came to know him. Most leaders would dread coming in for the debriefings and would just want to get it done with as soon as possible. SSG Kiernan would come in from missions several hours long, yet always acted like he had all the time in the world to debrief the events of his day for me. This was because he was truly passionate about his work, and he believed in the mission. On a daily basis he displayed true compassion for the Iraqi people. He seemed pained that he was not in a position to do more for them. SSG Kiernan was the shining example of what an American Soldier should be. I only knew him a short time, but I will never forget him.

I served with SSG Kiernan when I was assigned to 2-12 CAV. For a short while I served as the Commo Chief in his tank company. I was amazed at how helpful and selfless he was. I remember this one time in particular where I was put on a detail to clean up the EPA area in the motorpool. Ultimately SSG (then SGT) Kiernan was in charge because he was the battalion's EPA representative. Me and a bunch of other guys busted our tails for a week cleaning that area up because the EPA was going to come out and inspect it. After the detail was complete SSG Kiernan put all of us in for a battalion coin and sure enough we all received one. He took no credit for the work that was completed even though he was out there helping us at times. I'll never forget that. SSG Kiernan was an extremely likeable guy. He had a lot of connections, knew a lot of people, and could make things happen. SSG Kiernan you are sorely missed. Thanks for helping me get through that NTC rotation. I was just a commo guy hanging around a bunch of tankers. This country will forever be in debt to you.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Dear Donna,
I have taken so long to write something because I just can't believe Chris is gone and I can't seem to find the words. Truly there are no words to fill Chris' void and there are no words for your pain and what you are going through. I am so sad that he is gone, I am so angry at the foe, I am so proud of you and of Chris. I am so honored to have known Chris, and to know you. We all kind of began our lives together, in your house- you and Chris at the concert and then the BBQ, Bobby and I at Sandy's and your place. What good times we all had together. Many laughs, many memories. Bobby and I will forever hold Christopher in our hearts. Thank you for always being there for Bobby and Braydon, and we are here now, for you. Goodbye, Easter Bunny. You are so missed. But I know you've got that big Cheshire grin goin' up there.

After reading most of the entries in Chris' guest book I realized that something was missing. What is missing? I couldn't tell you!! As I sit here looking at Chris' face I can honestly say that no words can describe this man or properly honor this man. I served with Chris in 2-12 CAV for years. Chris helped me soo many times and saved my butt a few more. I am out of the Army now but if I could have taken that bullet instead of him, I can honestly say that I would have.
Donna you are a beautiful person and one of these days I will stop by the house to see you. I don't know if I can right now.

SSG Kiernan was the greatest NCO and Wing-man a Platoon Leader could ask for. I had the honor of serving with him in OIF 07-08. The impact he had on me as an officer and a man can not be measured. His career as a Non-Commissioned Officer was dedicated to caring for his soldiers. His legacy will live on forever with the soldiers he trained and served with. We will all miss him very much and will never forget his sacrifice for us and our country.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

We are so honored to meet you and Chris and become your friends. Through your hospitality, care for people, kindness and love for each other you touched lives of many people.
Chris looked like an ordinary guy, but whoever got to know him would admit Chris was extraordinary. It is difficult to imagine that such personality could be gone from the earth. We are sure we will feel Chris’s presence in our lives, and perhaps he had become your Guarding Angel, Donna.

Chris was an American Soldier, a Hero in more ways than anyone could describe. Chris was Donna’s everything and he meant the World to the rest of us. “Uncle Chris” was my son’s Mentor and Hero. My Aunt Joy described Chris in these words “No one has ever come into our lives and grabbed a hold of hearts like Chris took hold of ours”. That saying goes for me and I believe everyone that ever met him. What a man!
My life is now forever changed just by knowing this one person. As we mourn the loss of his life, we will always be grateful for the time that we had him in our lives and we will forever carry his memory in our hearts.

Donna, I only had the honor of meeting Chris once. You and he had come to Havasu before your wedding. He was pretty quiet, (but compared to the "ya-ya's, aren't they all?) He made you soooo happy, and the two of you are incredibly lucky to have experienced a love many people NEVER get to share. You are very gracious and brave, (as was Chris), to share his life with a life of service. I pray for your continued courage to make it through each day, one day at a time.

Dear Donna,
I only had the pleasure of meeting you and Chris once in Lake Havasu City at Jennifer & Joe Behmer's house last fall. We had a great afternoon around the pool. Although I don't know either of you that well, you have been in my prayers and thoughts since Chris' death. Both of your names have been added to a prayer list at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in LHC. I've also added your names to the Book of Intentions for daily prayers also. I remember hugging Chris before we left and thanking him for his sacrifice of giving me and my family a life of freedom here in the USA. I wish I had words of wisdom to give you comfort but I know you have a broken heart. I only ask that the Lord sends one of his angels to be with you and your families during this very difficult time. Know that you are prayed for everyday. May God Bless.
Most Sincerely,

June 6, 2007
Chris was a soldier in his heart and in his head. He often felt that it was necessary to voice his opinion about the way things should be executed, but he never did that at home. He was a different man at home. He loved me, protected me and respected me. He loved our animals, he loved helping others, he'd visit with the neighbors, he loved landscaping our yard. The hardest thing for me now is the reality that I will never see him again. People try to comfort me by saying he will always be in my heart, but that is nothing compared to having him hug me so tight I could not even breath. He will never hold my hand again, and I will never see his beautiful smile and his beautiful green eyes. His unit was fortunate to have such a gental giant amongst them. The Army could not forgo their policy to upgrade him to SFC a rank in which he already worked for. He just wanted to do a good job, and from what I hear he did a good job. Rest assured that before I let them close his casket, I pinned him SFC, the Army's regulations no longer meant anything to me. He is and always will be, "The General"!
I love you E. B.

I have never been another Soldier with his ability to touch the Soldiers around him, regardless of rank. His selflessness set an example that none of us can live up to and he is sorely missed by all. A model NCO, Soldier, and person, news of his death shook me up in way that very few things have in the last several years of fighting. Donna and family, thank you for everything that you have done for me. I wish you the best and hope that this pain will pass. Chris will never be forgotten.

I was watching the news late one Monday night when the local station broadcast the report on Chris's passing. There were so many memories which came flooding back to me about the time when we were stationed in Erlangen,Germany. I met Chris as a young soldier fresh out of boot camp and away from home for the first time. Chris was one of the first people I met and his helpfulness and sense of humor helped make the transition much easier. That comforting humor and ever so Gung Ho personality made the tough times in Iraq and the fun times back in Germany that much more memorable. I am very proud and honored to have served with Chris who embodied everything a true soldier should be.

Chris was one of my best friends when I joined the Army in 1990. We were roomates at Ferris Barracks, Germany while serving in B co 2/70th Armor. Between the two of us, we took care of the Commander and the many 1SGs we saw come and go. Through the 1st Gulf War we spent a lot of time together on KP and doing what Soldiers do when they are bored. We had scorpion fights and messed with the wildlife in the desert. We even volunteered to do a dismounted patrol in front of the cease fire line, which was pretty unusual for Tankers back then. After the war we were both assigned to B-66 as the Driver and Loader. Our Tank had to have been the best tank in the battalion. After many hours in the motopool, Chris and I would either go downtown Erlangen to "Bogarts" or head to the "Green Goose" in Nuernburg. We were always together.
I miss the times we shared in our youth. Through all the years and many other assignments, I shared stories of my friend. We lost touch, but I never forgot. He will always be in my heart.
Kiernan family, I am sorry for your loss, but am thankful I knew a wonderful Soldier and friend named Chris.
By the way, most of the stories Chris shared with you are probably true.

I wish every one of you could have had the chance to meet my friend and mentor Chris Kiernan; he was truly one of a kind. I was first introduced to Chris in D Co (my old Company) when I was a wet behind the ears and wide eyed 2LT. Chris was the epitome of what a “tanker” is supposed to look and act like…slightly round, loud, aggressive, proud, full of advice, and missing the customary “tanker tooth” (some will say that you aren’t truly a tanker until you’ve had one of your front teeth knocked out by the tank commander’s machine gun while going cross country). Chris was the heart and soul of the company, and friend to every soldier, NCO, and officer in it. He claimed to know everyone on Ft. Hood (which is a big place mind you), he claimed to have the ear of 4 star generals, and claimed he could find any missing part or piece of equipment you could ever need (though you never wanted to know exactly how he got it). The claims may have seemed outlandish and impossible, and for a time I had a hard time believing them myself, but there was never an instance where Chris didn’t come through or not personally know the 4 star general you’d run into. My friendship with Chris grew closer as our time for deployment neared, with he and his wife Donna essentially becoming surrogate parents to me and one of my fellow Lieutenants. Some in the military might frown on friendships between officer and NCO, but they can go right ahead and pack sand because it never affected any of us professionally, we all knew to keep work and play separate…and it really was more of what I said before anyway…surrogate parents. Chris and Donna insisted that we come by for dinner every Sunday night and hungry or not we were going to eat, and we were always spoiled rotten with Cajun cooking and the closest thing to family a single Lieutenant can get without going home. We were invited to Donna’s “family compound” in Lake Charles, LA for weekends of more Cajun food, saltwater fishing, golfing, and general Cajun carousing. Chris became “Texas dad” and Donna became “Texas mom”, and now Chris is gone. I’m not going to go into the specifics of his death here because it’s not appropriate, but he went down fighting to the last…and lasted longer than any doctor rationally expected him to. That’s just the way Chris was, immensely strong and concerned about all those around him before himself. The Army lost an outstanding soldier, and all of us that knew him lost a friend that defies description in words.

For each soldier that has fallen so that many may stand
We honor their spirit as they pass to God’s hand
For without their sacrifice we would live forever in fear
We pray for their loved ones and provide a salute and a tear
God help us heal the wounds of hate and the misery of war
That is our gift to our fallen heroes that are amongst us no more.

To the Kiernan Family
I just found out yesterday that my best friend was gone. Today it hit me really hard. I still remember to this day when we first met at Ft. Hood A. Co. 2-12 Cav. I could write a book about the things we've been through, but I will keep these memories close to my heart. Donna stay strong and I will keep you in my prayers.

SSG Christopher Kiernan was my hero. The first time I met him he was coming back from a patrol back in 2004. He had a giant smile on his face and was covered in dust. I heard him tell the TOC guys a great story of what just happened and how his guys reacted. From that day on every conversation we had was the same, a huge smile on his face, laughing, joking exagerating, about what could've happened and what didn't. The last time I saw SSG K was in december, he was dropping off detainees at Prosperity. He came through my door covered in dust with a huge smile on his face. He was everything I ever wanted to be, and although I don't think I will ever be close, I will never stop trying to be like him. Thank you SSG K. God Bless you and your family. You will never be forgotten.

Donna,
I saw Chris a few weeks ago when he came to FOB Prosperity. He always stopped by and we would talk for awhile about what was going on. He parked his tank right behind my troop. I yelled at him and told him there was a five dollar charge for parking here. You can probably guess what he said back. I use to give him stuff and what ever else I could to help him and his guys out. It hit me hard and still does when I heard he'd been killed. I will miss him and will always remember the good times we had together.

Dear Donna:
You know people are truly special when you have heard so many loving, wonderful stories about them that you feel like you personally know them. We feel so honored to have met you and Chris while visiting before the deployment. Thank you for taking our son, Matt (Sandy), into your Texas family. While visiting with the other soldiers over those few days, Chris’s name would always come up accompanied by a smile, laugh and words of admiration. He was truly respected and looked up to.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your extended family. Chris is a hero and someone we are extremely proud to have met. He will never be forgotten. We only wish that Matt could be there to help comfort you. May God bless you and watch over you.

I am truly sorry for your loss. Chris was a great guy. I was in his unit at Fort Knox, Ky. He was SPC Kiernan back then but still a great soldier and a great man. He always had a smile and just cheered up those around him. I lost touch with him after that but I am glad to see he met a wonderful woman and lived a happy life. I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard of his death. My husband is serving in Iraq right now as well. He also knew Chris from the NCO Academy. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.

I am not even sure if it is appropriate for me to sign this book, as I did not personally know SSG Kiernan; yet, I met him, and heard great things about him from my dad, who respected him as a comrade and a loyal friend.
I am deeply sorry for your loss, and, as my dad remembers the faithful friend Kiernan was to him, so I will remember the price he paid so that I could be free to write my thoughts on this page.
To his family, my heart and prayers go out to you now in your time of grief, and always.

I came upon this site, I thought, by accident. But I've been blessed by reading about the brilliant and heroic man Chris was. What a hero he is, and God knows our country is in desperate need of heroes. I can think of no one that is more befitting of that title than the men and women in uniform who so selflessly and sacrificially serve our great country. Your Chris was a bright light that shone upon the lives of many. They are far richer today because of knowing and working with him. He sounds like a man that was not afraid to be a Man. The Bible says that the deeds of a man live after him; I've no doubt that many persons have been impacted in a most positive way by Chris and will live out the beam that he shone upon them. May God give you strength and comfort as you grieve the loss of Chris. I wish I had known him, and now I feel as if I did. May you feel God's love and presence surrounding you. May sweet memories flood your mind and stay close. Through this terrible tragedy, may God be magnified and His mighty works exalted.
