Another year has passed and you are within us each and every day. Micah has been given your genes and personallity. He's driving your Montero now and as he pulls up, we see all of you within. And, of course he's looking like his dad. Unfortunately, the truck needs some work, but I do my best keeping it on the road as you would. Azaria has soared to new heights. She made the deans list at college and has many offers of theater classes. Expenses are mounting but to see her thrive and continue to excel, I'll go to the poor house but I'll give my last penny to keep her going. She is so awesome and extremely smart (like her dad!) Micah is tight with his little money he makes, like his dad. He graduated high school with top honors and now finding his way. You will live on and I'll see you one day. Peace be with you.

Another year has passed my brother. Azaria is doing well and finished her first year at Howard University. Micah will be graduating this year. Your truck is still running and Micah has finally drove it. One day hopefully I can get it restored as a remembrance of you and the times you and Andrea drove together. Andrea is doing well and she keeps you close. Each year for the month of May, I display your gold star along with the American Flag that is embossed with your name and unit. Keep your peace and protect all.

I promised you before you were deployed I would take care of them. Don´t know how I´ll pay her college but it´ll get done. She has accomplished more than you can imagine. You are a proud dad. Peace.

Azaria is now driving. We gave her our car because she is very active in theater and is always on the go. Micah is approaching driving age as well. He wants to drive your truck that I have kept in running condition. It can use a paint job. I've tried to raise some money to get the truck ready for him but that didn't work out just yet. I would love to see him behind the wheel of your truck. They miss you so much and I have kept your memory alive in the house and in their hearts. Rest in peace my battle brother.

It's been a long time. But, we have and will always carry your memory. Your children has grown so much and they miss you very much. Micah is almost driving age and we still have your truck. Just trying to find a way to restore it. Nothing would be more gratifying then to see him drive his Dad's truck! Azaria is about to get her driver's license. So much has happened and each day they are reminded of how much you loved your family. Rest in Peace. I kept my promise to you and I look after Micah and Azaria as they are my family .

I got acquainted with Marq shortly after his family moved to San Antonio in the late 90's. We went to high school together and were close friends. Meeting him for the first time, he made quite an impression on me. He was an extremely talented and truly unique character; full of style, down-to-earth, courageous and had an incredible thirst for knowledge. He always put at least 110% into everything he was passionate about- which, when I knew him, was mainly his music. The one quality that stuck out to me was his sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh. I think of him often and wish to send my condolences to his beautiful family. Marq will always be with us. We will always remember him.

Micah is a handful but a sassy full of spirit litte boy as you would want him to be. Very smart as well. As Azaria, you would be proud of him too. Azaria asks about you and I read her the Airborne memorial page dedicated to you. You are not forgotten and your spirit lives within their heart each day. I've known Marcus since 2006..he was an extraordinary soldier who excelled in multiple arenas. First, he was a loving father devoted to his wife and children. He often spoke of his family and you could glean his devotion and love. To the army, he was the best amongst the medics/soldiers in his performance and aptitude. I would trust him in in any mission. He is a testament to his family and friends as an incredible person shaped by those who loved him. Although I knew him briefly as one of his military leaders....He had taught me an example to live life to the fullest! a testament to his family and friends...he is sorely missed to this day!

I cannot express how sorry I am to hear of Marquis’ passing. My memories of him are frozen to a little kid cracking jokes on the front porch in Chibana. Time to time over the years, I have thought back to those days. And, one of the memories that still make me laugh is Doc and Mark razzing each other. Doc would laugh because his “little brother” would get some laughs. And, I remember how proud Doc was of him…
Despite any feeling one has of the conflict in Iraq, Marquis is a hero by all accounts. I had not seen him in sometime. However, from all I have read, he was the pinnacle of what it means to be a good man, not just a good soldier. He becoming such a man is of no surprise to the people that knew him all those years ago. I send my condolences to the family and friends of Marquis, even though I know that is far too little. And, I hope that they find some respite in their sorrow. Though he is in a better place, I know he will always be missed and never forgotten. Our prayers are with Marquis and his family always.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Marquis you were a wonderful husband and father. I could not have asked for a better husband for my niece. It is still difficult to accept your death as the days go on. You will never be forgotten and you will forever be a part of our hearts and memories for years to come. We will tell your children what a remarkable young man and father you were. It is still difficult to use the past tense when I speak of you. For whatever, reasons the Lord has sent me in the same exact path as yours in the Army - from Ft. Bragg, N.C. all the way to Tikrit, Iraq (COB Speicher). I have found your picture here in the make shift memorial. It is hard to fight the tears away. I know you are in a better place but I wish you did not have to be called home at such a tender age. We love you and miss you so very much. You touched so many lives...You will never be forgotten! Thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. We will take care of Andrea, Azaria and Micah. Love your Aunt,

There are no words i can find to express the feeling of loss and sadness after spc mccants passing. Marquis and I were in the same platoon at Ft. Bragg. we both deployed together and We were good friends. he always talked of his wife and family. We made plans to go snowboarding when we came back home. He was like a brother, he always made me laugh because him and I were the "Irish brothers" when we first got to the unit our leaders always mixed us up. He will be forever missed and my thoughts and prayers are always with his family and friends. Sleep well my friend. When i get home we will still go snowboarding. you will be right there with me.

“Soldier”
Written to Honor the Service of Our Fallen Soldiers
Soldiers write history…they pay the price
Many miles distant, you live the life
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We hope and pray that all will find peace
In God, in the flag, in memories of valor
Gone now, our pride and courage you see
“An Army of One” our motto forever
Willing to risk all for love of our Brothers
We’re still Your Soldiers…and we showed the way
Our Lives too short, now pray for the others
Lived free died Heroes in lands far away
Deep within souls all cherished our Service
We’ll always have what some never know
Courage and Honor, our names forever
Lived life with purpose…just our time to go
We march in the Heavens with Honor and Glory
Missions accomplished we fought the Good Fight
Many years from now…we’ll tell the full story
Until that Day we will live in the Light
Our lives we laid down in a land far away
Still watching o’er you this night and by day
No need to talk…just know we are with you
There in your hearts and we hear what you pray
Yes we are your soldiers
Our lives we laid down
Still We guard o’er you
Still Duty bound
Entered the Battle of our own free will
Out of Duty for Country, and we’d do it still
We’ll always have what some never know
Lived life with purpose…it was our time to go

He will be greatly missed and is forever in our prayers here at FT Sam Houston. May GOd be with you and your family. God Bless. Senior Drill Sergeant Taylor A/232nd Med BN Fort Sam Houston Texas

I want to thank your son. For his act of becoming a member of the forces that keep us free and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memory of all those who knew him.
I am the mother of a soldier who is deploying for his 2nd tour to Iraq and I face the same emotions that faced your family when Spc McCants was deployed.
I don't pretend to know what to say that would bring you peace in this time of need, but I will pray for your family. I pray that Marquis' smile as beautiful as it is in his photo, his voice as he laughs at a joke, and his spirit which still lives, brings you comfort in the weeks, months, and years to come!

May GOD be with you.

I worked with Marquis and his wife and still work with his mother. He was a great man and loving father. His parents are deep in faith and understand that he is with his maker.

The life of Marquis has touched many lives. Although I did not know Marquis personally the word of his loss has affected me. We send prayers of peace to be upon him and his family. As we celebrate Memorial Day this weekend, let us try to remember those who have gave the ultimate sacrifice! Families will be forever affected by the loss of their loved ones. Try to find comfort in the loved ones you are able to hold close and dear to you at this time. Our focus should not be holiday sales and what not. We should honor those like Marquis!
Claudette, you and your family will be in our prayers.

I am deeply hurt to hear about the loss of my friend Marquis. I was very well acquainted with Marquis throughout my high school years and he was a good person with a good heart, not to mention very talented. I loss touch with Marquis after moving to a different area, however I never forgot about him. My sincere prayers are with the McCants family and friends. I pray that Marquis knew the Lord as his personal Savior and that his soul will spend eternity in heaven, that way, I will be able to see him again. God bless you all

When I heard about the loss I was much surprised as I was devastated. I went to pick McCants up the day that he got to the unit. He really wasnt full of too much to say, until we started on the topic of music. We would sit and talk about his old record label and different ways to get into the business for hours. He was also the coolest guy I had ever met...I will always miss him.
To the family I express my sincerest condolences for the loss, he was a great friend, a great medic, and from the stories he told me an even better husband and father. God Bless you all.
To my comrade, fellow medic and brother in arms; we are going to get those guys. Love you man.

McCants, I want you to know you will never be forgotten, I never knew your family tho I listened to you ramble on about them for hours. I can never express my condolences enough to your family, I will always remember the good times and the bad. I will celebrate the life you led, instead of the sadness your death has brought. Always remember "Paratroopers don't die, they just slip away."
-Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you,
Jesus Christ and the American GI. One died for your soul,
the other for your freedom.
RIP - old roomate, friend, and forever brother.
