Today is the 14th anniversary of Bruce's passing, and I wanted to take a moment to share my memories of Bruce. I met him in 1995, not long after he moved to the Peninsula. Even though he was nearly ten years older than me, I could hardly keep up with him. He was larger than life, with his bellowing laugh and strong desire to fellowship with other believers. He moved into a rental house that I shared with a couple of other young men, I think in 1996, and was there until early 1998. I remember speaking to him by phone shortly after he married Erin, but we never were able to meet up in person. Even though he had several jobs while I knew him, his true love was the military. As sad as it is to think of him not being here, it's comforting to know he ended up making the ultimate sacrifice doing what he loved: protecting those he cared about and spreading the gospel message. Miss you brother, and an thankful for the time that we had.

Bruce, I just found out you had passed. Though we had lost touch after Fort Leonard Wood back in the mid 90's, you will always have a lasting efect on me. I still remember the marathon gym sessions and your belief in the lord. You were the most upbeat and cheerful person on Ft. Leonard Wood.

SGT Horner...Bruce...Big Guy...I just found out you passed. Man...my heart breaks. I have thought of you often since our days @ Ft. Wood because I wanted to tell you what God has done in my life since those days. You played a big role in that. You are & were one of the most amazing men I have ever met. God used you in a great way in my life, when I was not living for the Lord. Love You man! Wish you could see me now & all that God is doing. We will talk about it all someday & for eternity as we worship the KING! Onward & Upward!
To the family...I am so sorry for your loss. SGT. Horner was such an amazing guy! I just found out about his passing. I will pray for you even now & ask that God continue to provide strength each day!

Bruce-
My family and I stopped by for a visit today (I hope you don't mind the yellow roses). Incredibly hard to believe that willl already be three years tomorrow. Know that you are still in the hearts of many. I'm still feeling Blessed to know you and have you touch my life. I wish you were here so you could see and speak to my kids...it's so hard to put everything about you and what happened into words. Please accept Brian and Terrance into the fold up there and guide them as only you can. Say "Hi" to Chuck for me too.

To the Family of SGT Bruce Horner,
I met SGT Horner in Hanau and he often spoke about his wife and children and how important his family was to him. He was such a caring husband and a true gentleman. He loved the Lord and he enjoyed working with young people and music. To me, he was the epitome of kindness and he gave me advice and shared stories to help me when I was in the position to help him.
I will never forget this beautiful man of God. As I feel loss, I can't imagine your pain. It has taken me such a long time to write this online. I wear his memorial bracelet today to remind myself to live a life on purpose and to be a better person and serve Soldiers and God like SGT Horner did. Much love to his family. Forever in my heart. I met Bruce at the gym in Baumholder Germany. A big man with an equally big heart. He taught me so many things wether they were weight lifting techniques or allowing the Lord to enter your heart to remove anger and allow forgiveness for those who may have hurt you.
Buddy, I only knew you for four or five months but you embraced me as a friend and as a member of your family. You'll never be forgotten.

Bruce comes from a wonderful family who serve others and strive to let the love of God shine through them in their deeds, actions and words.
Bruce served God with his kindness toward all. As a military policeman, what I respected about him was that Bruce never allowed that trusted position to go to his head. He had compassion towards soldiers he had to arrest or detain.
We used to talk many a night off-duty, and Bruce would feel another's pain and sadness. He was a big man and lifted weights, but rather than use muscle and might, he used care and concern in his duties.
When I think about just that aspect of Bruce's make up, and the fact that at a person's lowest, Bruce was humble in his duties and did his duty with the humility of God's grace on his shoulders, I can't help but to look to heaven and say: "Rest in peace God's faithful servant."
Rest in peace now my big friend. You have served God well in this lifetime.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Bruce Horner was a special man. He cared about others and reached out to others. His joy for life never wanned, and this big kid was kind at heart.
There is a picture of him as an M.P. involved in the DARE PROGRAM. He took time to be a role model for kids.
If ever was a man that fit the Bible proverb "...But there is a man who sticks closer than a brother" this was the man that fits that description.
Bruce would be there for you in your time of need. This was the type of guy he was. I am honored to have known him and called him a friend.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

Dear Erin and Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Bruce's passing. My sincerest sympathy goes out to you and your family. I met Bruce in the 7th grade and we were good friends throughout our high school years at Admiral King.
In reading some of the other entries in the guest book, I see how he touched so many people with his kindness. That was a quality in Bruce that I witnessed so many years ago, and was moved to see that he hadn't veered from that when I saw him last at our 20th high school reunion.
I will always remember his laughter, his singing, and above all, his generosity. He is truly missed.

To the Horner family,
I was saddened by the sudden news regarding Bruce. I knew him before he got married and eventually lost touch due to both of us returning to active duty. I was not able to attend his wedding due to military obligations. He was so full of life and his love of the Lord was beyond belief. I take comfort knowing that if he cannot be here with us, then he is with Jesus.

Dear Family,
My husband and I are also a family who lost a loved one in this war. We share in your grief and extend to you our sympathies. We also share in a faith that lets us know that we will see our loved one again some day soon when the Lord returns. Please know that you will be in our thoughts and prayers as you go through each day without him. I still miss our son every day and will miss his wonderful smile and sense of humor for the rest of my life. Don became a Christian when he was around 7 yrs. old at camp BaYouCa in NY. He wanted to be a Marine from 10th grade on. He was killed October 25, 2006 at 19 yrs. old. I recently read a book entitled "90 Minutes in Heaven by Don Piper. It gave me a wonderful perspective on heaven that I didn't have before and also gave me great comfort in knowing where Donny is and what a truly wonderful place it is. My daughter-in-law was having a rough time dealing with Donny's passing away and I gave it to her and it helped her tremendously even as a Christian conquer her fear of death and the unknown. I hope this letter helps you know that people who don't even know you or your family are thinking of you during this difficult time. I received a letter when our son was killed from my 1st grade teacher who is a Christian also. She lost a daughter from an unknown heart problem suddenly at the age of 12. She wrote and told me this in her card that I will never forget and it helped me during the really sad times. She said to take each day at a time, to pray for strength, to listen to uplifting Christian music and to cry whenever you need to. Thank you for your families sacrifice for our country's freedoms. It truly means more to you when you experience it first hand.
Sincerely,

Erin, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I had to read Wednesday's article several times to believe that is was talking about the Bruce that I knew from Bally's Gym. At first I was really sad and confused but then I realize that he is now in the place that he wanted to be. Bruce always brought a smile to my face. He was full of life and had such great energy. Not only did Bruce motivate me in the Gym but he motivated me spiritually as well, more than he ever knew. I loved his passion and dedication to God & to Church. Everytime I would see him, he would take the time to speak to me about the Lord & would always ask "are you coming to Church this Sunday?" Thank you Bruce for all the smiles and for being a spiritual inspiration. God Bless.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

Erin you are in my thoughts and prayers. God will comfort you in your time of need. I would love for every man to have meant Bruce...what a true example of a devoted Christian. God was always smiling down on him while he served the Lord here on earth. I know you are so proud of the man he was here and God is rewarding him now and forever in his mighty kingdom. Erin, I didn't get the opportunity to know you or Bruce as much as I would have liked to. I just wanted you to know that the few times I was able to be around both of you...was very memorable to me. I remember Bruce in the choir singing his heart and soul to the lord. I never really enjoyed the music part of church but Bruce was such a joy to see. I also remember having lunch with everyone at Plaza Azteca. I pray that God will give you peace in remembering all the goodness that Bruce gave of himself. God Bless, Daisy

Father we entrust our brother Bruce to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Bruce in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

Erin, God bless you. Bruce was truly a good person, he was the first person we met when we moved into Daybreak condos, and then he was offering to help us unload our furniture off of the truck. He was just so kind and helpful. He got my son and I to join the gym and he was so supportive, when we started going. He will truly be missed. Erin god bless you, if there is anything I cn do let me know.

Dear Erin, God blessed us by having Bruce in our lives. When we went thru the gates at Ft Eustis, we always looked for Bruce to say hi or give us a big smile if he was busy. He also gave the greatest hugs, always with lots of strength and always with the love of God. He truely was a child of God, shining his light bright and true for all to see. You were the best gift he ever received, and you and he made a complete package. Honey know we have such full memories of his life, and we are there for you at any time. Love, hugs and prayers. Erin, we are so sorry for your loss. I don't think there was anyone who didn't like Bruce. It has been said many times throughout this guess book, and it is so true. Bruce made everyone feel good. He was so outgoing. He loved the Lord and it showed. My fondest memories of Bruce include the all day volleyball at Sentara, or wherever we could play and the sing alongs. Bruce was always happy and we would do anything for you. Even though over time, we didn't get together much, everytime we did, it seemed like nothing changed about our friendships. Bruce was a special person and our lives have been blessed because of his friendship.

Erin,
I met Bruce back in '99 and he immediately befriended me and got involved in my life, played volleyball together on many occasions, hanging out at church activities, etc. Brooke knew him from his softball days playing with her Dad and working with the youth at church. Bruce is a great man of God, spiritual-minded on all things and a great Christiam example. We are sorry for your loss but can imagine him in Heaven with his great smile, singing and praising the Lord! We'll see him again when we meet him in Heaven!
Love,

Oh what an addition God received to His heavenly choir. Bruce is going to be truly missed. I am so proud of him for his service to our country but I am more proud of his service in God's army. He has touched the lives of so many people. Many more than we will probably ever know. I praise God for the example Bruce is in my life. We need more "Big Bruce's" in this world. To Erin & his family - keep clinging to Jesus. He will sustain you. Know that you all are being lifted up in prayer around the world. May you truly feel the loving arms of our Heavenly Father wrapped around you carrying you through this difficult time. God Bless today and always.

Dear Erin and Family - Bruce may have been taken from us sooner than we wanted, but his memory and his positive influence on our lives will continue to burn brightly. None of us who sang with him late into the evenings at chuch or at one of our homes can forget his love of the Lord, and for singing praise and worship songs to his King. His enthusiam was and still is contagious. He is a hero, and the thought of Bruce hearing the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant - enter now into your reward" from his hero Jesus makes me smile through the tears. I look forward to the day when we can all sing together again. May God grant you His peace until that day. With Love, Dave Lundahl

Erin and Family,
Mark and I (and the rest of my family) were very saddened by the news about Bruce. We will truly miss all of the fun times we had...especially our games of spades and digging trenches at the wonderful condos. We will never forget what a wonderful person Bruce was and how he touched so many peoples lives with his postive, fun, caring attitude. He will truly be missed by us and many others. We will always be just a phone call away if you ever need anything! You and your family will and have been in our thoughts and prayers.

To Our Dear Friend - Erin:
Our hearts are broken with yours, yet they find so much joy in the life that Bruce lived. Erin, I remembder when I met Bruce at Shadrach's Coffee House at Hope Community Church. I had just left my church home of ten years and was searching for the right place. A frined of mine sang one night and introduced me to Bruce, who then introduced me to Greg and Dave. Little did I know so many years ago that Bruce was God's prod to place me where I am today. It is because of Bruce I rediscovered my undying love for God and my willingness to serve Him in ministry.
Erin, we are so broken for your loss and we want you to know that even though we are "stuck" in Texas, our hearts are right with you. We love you and we pray for you everyday.
My dear friend Bruce:
I AM SO JEALOUS!!! You are dancing and singin and touching our Savior!!! You have no idea how much of an impact you had on my life, and honestly, I never realized it until I put some thought into it. God gave you a gift and you never once hesitated to use it, and many people today can say that they are a child of the Living God because you were unashamed of your faith. I only hope that I can emulate your fervor for God. Have fun with all of those who have gone on before us and your memory will live on forever!
Grace and Peace!
Love eternally-

Dear Erin ~ Our heartfelt sympathy to you & yours sweetie. We've all had time to reflect on 'Tick' and none of us can think of a time he didn't have a sincere smile on his face, laughter in his heart, joy in his countenance. His amazing love for his Lord and God was apparent to any & all within ~ would you say 2 minutes was actually too long!? I loved that about him, he could have you rollin' laughing one minute (as only Tick could do) and then the very next second, could take you (in prayer) to God with an intensity rarely seen or heard. He will be missed - he is loved - He is with his Father in Heaven now and I know he joined that praise team the very second he got there!!!
Love & God bless you sweet child.
I pray He keeps His loving arms around you in this time of need. May He bring you the peace that only He can bring.
Love, Seena, Doug & family
PS.
Dear 'Tick' - You rock with the best now!!!

Erin and family, I just want you all to know what a fine person Bruce was and it is truly sad that we have lost such a wonderful person from our lives. I first knew Bruce as a Solider, though he quickly became a friend. It was an honor and privilege to have him working for me and along side me for those years in the 2174th MP Det. Bruce always gave me 110% in everything I asked him to do and without a complaint. I always knew that he had the best interest of his soldiers in mind and he always put his soldiers needs before his as a true leader does. Bruce was more than just a soldier though, he was a friend, a friend I’ll miss dearly, especially that big grin. You known that grin, that grin he always had on his face even when the going got tough or things weren’t going as planned. Bruce, always the optimist, just kept smiling. Bruce was truly a good man, an honorable man, and a friend I’ll miss dearly.

My beautiful Erin! I love you so much! I'm so sorry that Bruce had to leave so soon. I love the way the obituary is worded that Bruce "danced" through the pearly gates. I was just telling Erika and Amber last week that whenever Bruce sang "I can only Imagine", the part where it says "Would I dance for you Jesus or in awe of you be still" that I just knew Bruce was dancing his heart out - can't see him standing still for very long - especially now that he's with Jesus. He and Jan are probably holding hands and jumping for joy - I can really see that! I cannot imagine how you feel - like having the rug pulled out from under you. You have been so blessed to have been loved so much by such a Godly man. I know you'll miss him terribly (we all will - already do!) I hope you will get a chance to come and visit me here in Knoxville - I have legal custody of Amber, now. We are all praying for you. I'm sorry I won't be able to be there for the service on Thursday - it really bites that I can't! Just know how much you are loved and how much Bruce has made such an impact on so many people's lives - even when he didn't know it - he always let his light shine. I pray that I can be like that!
Please keep in touch! I can't wait to see you! Please take care of yourself and keep the faith. I love you, my dear, wonderful, beautiful friend.

There is so much to say about Bruce. I can't possibly try to put it in words.
After my brother came back from the Iraq war unscathed, I never in my wildest dreams could imagine our Lord taking you home this way. I just don't have words to express the sorrow of our loss and the overwhelming happiness for you to be experiencing heaven. I know my Dad was at the gate to welcome you in. I'm kind of jealous.
Those couple of weeks we spent together while you were here in South Carolina at FT. Jackson, were some of the most fun times in my life. You actually got me to try sushi! And not just one time but several different kinds. I wish I could show a picture to everyone how the sushi bar tender's face had this ,"Oh No, not another giant", look on his face when you walked up to the counter. It was hillarious to see and experience life from your perspective.
We loved having Bruce here, and he became part of our family for ever when he proposed to Erin at my parent's house on that New Years. Bruce was a Big brother to everyone he met, and he always looked out for you as though you were his own brother or sister. Thank you for looking out for my brother when you were stationed in Germany together. I am eternally indebted to you for your service to our country and the sacrifice you and your family have made for all of us to have the freedom we so easily take for granted every day.
This world is truly an emptier place without you here to spread your enthusiasm for life. I can't wait to see you again in heaven. We can cruise around like old times, and you can show me the ropes.
I put in and dedicated a 20' flag pole in my front yard just so I could have the colors to present at half mast in your honor. Now every time I see that flag, you and all of our country's hero's will be remembered.
My deepest sympathies to your family and friends for their loss.
Love you Brother, and miss you "Some kind of bad."

Dear Erin and family,
Bruce was our little ray of sunshine when ever he would come visit us at the exchange. I work for Estee Lauder and he always had such kind words and a huge smile for us. When he was at the gate he always had that smile for us too. I remember him coming in to tell us he was going to ask you to marry him and what joy you had brought into his life. He was a great man. Who wasn't a friend of Bruce? He was always loving, friendly, welcoming and always drawing people towards the Lord. I can't even imagine how many people's lives he touched with his smile and his laugh. Erin, I knew you were the perfect match for him from the moment I saw the two of you together. With all of the same wonderful qualities as Bruce, you have and will continue to touch many lives too. May the LORD lift you up and sustain you during this time. Please know I really wanted to come to show my condolences and love for you and Bruce but it is not going to be possible. I'll be praying for you.

Bruce was a really good man and a friend to so many others. He always exemplified sincere concern and compassion for those who had problems and issues. I truly appreciated his consistent example of being concerned about the welfare and overall well-being of his peers and subordinates. His life was based upon solid, down-to-the-core, values and principles of integrity, perseverance, and respectfulness that still meant more to him than being liked or accepted just to be one of the gang. He knew how to truly take a stand for those things that were bigger and more important than what the eye beheld; and because of his deep-rooted faith in Christ and his love for his Heavenly Father, Bruce never had to stand his ground alone. He was a friend that others could count on---he would give you the shirt off of his back (even though it was big enough for two of us) and then ask if you needed anything else.
It was my honor and privilege to have served with Bruce for several years as his Provost Marshal, Battalion Commander, and Brigade Commander. By title and position, I was the leader and the boss, so Bruce had to do it my way. But more than once he quietly and respectfully sought my audience to “discuss” the options and help me see alternatives that he felt could improve the quality of life and enhance the work processes for the Soldiers actually doing the job on the street. I never questioned his loyalty to his nation, to the Army, to his unit leadership, or to the Supreme Being to whom he declared his utmost allegiance.
I commend Bruce for all the good he has done, for his example of compassion for those in need, for his friendship to each of us, and for his ultimate and supreme sacrifice doing what he wanted to do, volunteered to do, and willingly, selflessly, accomplished in a proud and honorable manner. May God, our kind and loving Father in Heaven, accept our friend and fellow Soldier, SGT Bruce Horner, openly into that eternal heavenly family from whence we came and also provide peace, comfort, and consolation to his earthly family who mourn the loss of their dearly beloved son, brother, uncle, and husband.

Erin and family, Bruce is already missed in my heart. From the volleyball games, gym workouts and get togethers to the trip with Erin to visit the family, Bruce was a huge part of my life. Erin and family, We want to offer our deepest sympathies. We know what a tremendous loss it is to you all. Bruce had a hugh impact on our family while we attended Christ Church. (Especially our three sons). Anyone who knew Bruce knew what a faithful person he was. We are all better people for knowing him. What a privilege and honor it was to have him in our lives. He was a true hero from his relationship with God to his service to our country. May God bless you and the family during this difficult time.

Few people I've ever met seemed to demonstrate the consistent joy and passion that I saw in Bruce. I know that joy & passion was from & for the Lord. I knew Bruce only for a couple of years (2000-2001), but I never left his presence without being encouraged. His family & friends are in my prayers during this time of loss & grief. But I know Bruce is smiling bigger than ever as He is now in the unveiled presence of Jesus. May thoughts of that also bring a smile to your faces!
