Richard Parker Obituary
He was born Dec. 9, 1980, in Strong, a son of Scott Hood and Dixie Parker. He was a sergeant in the Army National Guard and served with the A Battery 152nd Field Artillery for nine years. He truly loved what he was doing in serving his country. He received the Bronze Star posthumously.
Richard was a graduate of Mt. Abram High School, class of 1999. He loved to hunt, fish and go four-wheeling, and just about anything that had to do with the great outdoors. He enjoyed many things in his short life, including collecting coins, rocks and fossils. Everything seemed to fascinate him. He was a caring and thoughtful person who got his greatest enjoyment out of picking on his sisters. He enjoyed reading fantasy books and collecting wizards and dragons. There were many people he loved and who loved him in return. He was our son, grandson, brother, father, lover and friend, and we are all going to miss him very much.
He is survived by his mother, Dixie Flagg and step-father, Jerry Flagg, of Avon; his father, Scott Hood and step-mother, Flora, of Strong; his fiancŽe, Ashley Smith and his son, Keegan Smith, of Wilton; one brother, William Parker of Farmington; three sisters, Meghan Parker of Strong, Stephanie Hood of Strong and Cheyenne Flagg of Avon; maternal grandmother, Dawn Adams of Avon; paternal grandmother, Barbara Hood of Strong; step-grandparents Dorothy Savage and her husband, Frank, of Avon, and John Flagg of Avon; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He is also survived by extended family: step-father Jeff Wing of Madrid; step-brother Jason Wing of Madrid; and step-sister Jamie Wing of Strong.
He was predeceased by his grandfathers, Richard Parker Sr. and Roger Hood.
Visitation hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 25, at Mt. Abram High School, 1513 Salem Road, Salem. Full military funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Abram High School, with Chaplain Lt. Col. Andrew L. Gibson officiating.
Interment will follow in the Mile Square Cemetery in Avon. Following the interment a reception will be held at Phillips Middle School, Blake Hill, Phillips. Food may be brought to the Phillips Middle School kitchen entrance, from 9 a.m. at the time of the reception on Tuesday, June 26.
Friends wishing may make donations in Richard's memory to the Sergeant Richard K. Parker Scholarship Fund, c/o Judy McCurdy, Guidance Office, Mt. Abram High School, 1513 Salem Road, Salem, ME 04983.
Arrangements by Dan & Scott's Cremation & Funeral Service, 445 Waterville Road, Skowhegan.

I know you are up there listening to all of us telling our stories about you. Your name and you kindness will never be forgotten. You were a true hero and friend when I needed to talk and let out steam. There isn't a year that goes by I wish I could have traded places with you that night. It is hard knowing you gave your life for a country that seems like they have lost their way in the last few years. I know some day we will meet at the gates of heaven. Until then I will still reflect on this day and look back in time to remember the person who gave all to protect those in need and to stand up for beliefs you believed in. Rest in Peace my brother and thank you for being who you are and will always be to those that knew and served with you.

Hey bro. I miss you. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I know your watching down on me and the rest of the family. We all wish you were here. I got a new sweatshirt in memory of you and the teachers love it. In fact I got asked today if I was thinking about joining in the army. I said I might and he said he thought it'd be really good for me and I'd do well. You better not be partying too much without me up there. Things have been getting hard for me lately. Without you being here it's really hitting me. I miss all the times we have had. I wish you were here. I still have the memories but it's not the same. I put together a tribute video for SGT Parker from the memorial service held in Kuwait. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do, and I had never met him. From speaking with his fellow soldiers and viewing so many photos of him I felt as though i knew him. I will post the video on you tube, I'll be happy to send the an original high quality DVD to family or friends. I wish the family well, Ive prayed for them many times

Well there old class mate. It has been almost a year, it seems like it was just yesterday when we were walking down the halls at Mt. Abram High School. We all loved your smile. You would always make us laugh if anyone was down. My son parker speaks of you often like he can hear you talking or something. We went to visit you on Memorial day and he said I miss you Richard. He loves that his last name is the same as yours. Well Richard we love you and care about you. Until the day comes when we meet again, you will be in our hearts and prayers forever.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

My heart goes out to the family of Richard Parker. Just days before his funeral, we received news that our son Joel House had been also killed in Iraq. Our Army Casualty Assistance Officer told us about Richard because he knew him from a previous duty assignment. He even went to Richard's funeral during that week. What a brave man your son was and so dedicated to his country. He will never be forgotten. I know that time will help ease the pain you feel now, but every day is a new day of memories that flood over you. I pray that you will find a way to hold on to those memories and use them to help you go forward.

I am so sorry for your loss. My husband and I knew Richard well. He worked for my husband and I and he also babysat our daughter on many occasions. Our family is feeling the loss of Richard,but no one will feel the loss as much as you. He was such a wonderful man. If there is anything that we can do to help please contact us. Rich.....I use to bring you to the weathervane in Waterville on the weekends so you could meet the people who were picking you up for the reserves. I will never forget the times in Madison on Heald St. You were always saying that I was the best cleaner and that I should clean the house all the time for you. haha. To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
