On this Memorial Day 2015 I would like to give my condolences to Bill's Family and let you know that I will never forget such an outstanding soldier, son, husband, father, and brother. I was one of SFC Zapfe's NCO in Schweinfurt German. I recruited him to work for me as a driver. I saw great potential in "Wild Bill" as I called him not only as a soldier but as a human being. I could tell he had a great family upbringing by his loyalty and dedication. We played football together in the German League with the Schweinfurt Ballbearings along with our units flag football teams. I was always glad he was on my team. After reading all the great words about his life and career it made my chest poke out a little further for knowing that I got to serve with a great man that I will miss dearly. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with Bill's loved ones. God Bless You Brother, RIP!

I had the pleasure of serving with SFC Zapfe while stationed in A Co. 10th ENG. BTN. Ft. Stewart, GA. He was one of my 1st squad leaders after basic and easily the best. He was the person that I tried to emulate once I became a leader.
You will truly be missed. My heart goes out to his wife and children.

To the Zapfe Family: You do not know me nor I you, but I wanted to say thank you to your son for giving his life for our freedom. I attended the wedding yesterday of Mellisa/taras Senenko.William's name was among the family members mentioned in church during the service. Also, at the reception, a note stating in lieu of favors a dontaion was made to his children. What an inpact your loved one has made on this young newlywed couple, but also me. My brother also did not make it home after serving his country in 1972, he was killed the day of discharge coming home in an auto accident. Now we have our own soldiers in heaven looking down on us..I have William in my prayers. God Bless

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know William, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Sergeant First Class William A. (Bill) Zapfe is my nephew. We were delighted to watch his great family grow as they stayed with us often over the last ten years. He was killed in Muhammed Al Ali, Iraq close to a year ago, June 19, 2007 at 3 pm Iraq time, along with his driver, by an IED. He had been a career soldier in the Army 16 years, loved what he did (engineer), and believed in the global importance of what he was doing. He was an incredibly loved soldier (both as a subordinate and as a leader), husband, father, son, brother, grandson, nephew, friend and more, just because he was such an incredible guy and did all things very well. Born in Kentucky, flags throughout that state were at half staff until his burial. His void was and is unbearable to many. He leaves behind 3 children and his wife, who asked that my wife and I be with them at his home in Hinesville, GA, adjacent to Fort Stewart, the week after he died. It was an honor beyond measure to be there. Looking at pictures of Bill, I hope everyone can see and never forget one of the beautiful faces of our freedom…one whom I and many others have been blessed to know, but not nearly long enough. May God and all men of good will bless his sweet family, and may we all live better because he did.

My name is PFC james n.carroll I go by nathan.I was Bill's roommate back at Alpha co 10th Engineers in Schweinfurt,Germany during 1991.I'm hear to say that Bill was a great man and a great soldier, when some of the other guys would kick back in the evenings and on the weekends, not Bill he would put on his PT uniform and run down to the gym and workout. He loved being in the army and his job of being a combat engineer,he was a great citizen of ours and was a great citizen to the germans,he always had a calmness no matter where we went,I remember when we all traveled to Amsterdam,Brussels and London he looked like he fit in at all of these places like he had always been there.I belive I still have a picture or two of him, when I get a chance I will Submit a photo,I haven't seen him since October 22,1991,but he has always been in my thoughts and prayers. And I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers as well.

I want to wish my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Wild Bill Zapfe as we called him. I had the privilege of him being in my Squad 19th EN BN at FT Knox 93-94 prior to him getting out and coming back in. He was and always will be a great soldier in my eyes. He always had a way of making everyone laugh. He left his mark on me back than, and I had the privilege of seeing him again at Stewart in the 10 EN. I am so sorry to hear of your lost and the lost of a great American soldier like William.

Zapfe was the man! Bottom line. Of all the men I have ever served with, Zapfe was the most determined I ever met, and I guess if I had one word to describe Zapfe. it would be determination. This great man was determined to be the best at everything he done. From Husband, to Father, to Leader, to soldier, to friend. He was the best at all of them. No one who ever served with SFC bill Zapfe could say he was not! Zapfe was the go to guy, and I cherish every moment I got spend with this Great man, and I pray his wonderful family is left only with the many sweet, quite, and peaceful memories that he has left.
God Bless.

To the family of SFC Zapfe, I had the great pleasure of serving with SGT (at the time) Zapfe from 1999 to 2001 as a member of A/10E. SFC Zapfe was always a guy that you could look to for a smile. Overseas in Bosnia, countless days in the field, "Bill" was always good for lightening the mood. He certainly had a great impact on my military experience, one that has and will continue to carry over into my private life. I am terribly embarrassed that it has taken me this long to write this and beg your pardon.

To the Zapfe family;
I am truly sorry for the loss of a great man, friend, and father/husband. I had the distinct honor and privilege to work with SFC Zapfe at A/10E at Ft Stewart, GA. I am really devastated when I heard the news. He was a friend, a mentor, a leader to me. I served two tours with him in Iraq and he made our tours so easy to bear. He always makes us laugh with his witty jokes but when it comes to serving his country, he gets serious. When it comes to his men, he will lay down everything for their sake. You will be missed SFC Zapfe...very much.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

SFC Zafe will truely be remembered as one of the great leaders we have ever had in Eco. I have grown with this man since i have been at stewart with him. As young sgts we have been together. I think me and him were 2 of the last once within the compnay when it first started. He was allways a hard charger mission first and play later. This is one of the things i respected about him. I have been in 3 tours to the desert with him and he has allways lead the way and now i am sure he is leading the way in a better place. One thing that i think of every time i think of him is him loveing rusty wallace and me and him talking Nascar when ever we could and that old car i wish he would paint one solid color. I will miss you more then you think and hopefully i will put some of the things i learned from you in what i do. thank you for makeing me a better person

To the Family of SFC Zapfe;
He was a great man, who could always be counted on to get mission done; As a young 2LT in the D/10E, I looked to SPC Zapfe at the time to when things got hard. It was a proud day when we was promoted to SGT, I didn't think anyone else in the company deserved it more that Zapfe. He proved us right by taking care of his soldiers, working hard, and when it came down to it, he never had his soldiers do something he wasn't willing to do himself.
It was a great shock to here of his passing, he was one of those guys who you thought would live through everything.
SFC Zapfe was one those guys that you just remember.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

SFC. Zapfe is what I call the peoples soldier. He stood for everything that a soldier/Sapper should stand for. He was a unique leader with his own leadership style. He wasn't only a soldier or leader but a friend. To some of us over seas he was like a father figure to us no matter what the problem was. I know that Zapfe help mold me into a soldier among other NCO's and soldiers from Echo Co. He's gonna be missed tremendously but never forgotten..Sappers All The Way

SFC William Zapfe and Family, I want you to know that serving under you was one of the greatest honors of my life. From 1996 - 2002 I served with or directly for SFC Zapfe in places such as Kuwait, Bosnia. "Bill" was an outstanding Leader, Mentor but a much greater friend. I learned my leadership and caring for my soldiers from his guidance. But greater than that I watched as a proud soldier became a father. Bill passed away as a hero to his Nation a friend to many but most importantly the "Proudest husband and father in the World. To Bill I say " thank you for everything brother." Lay in the Arms of Angels, and GOD SPEED...

A great loss has befound us. There was not a man as respected or loved as SFC. Willim Zapfe. I first met Bill when I arrived at Ft Stewart in 2001 and he quickly earned my respect both as a soldier, and as a man. We served 2 tours of duty in Iraq together, and once as a squad leader in his platoon. Though he may be gone, he will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew him no matter how brief it may have been. My heart felt sorrow, and best wishes go out to his loving wife and beautiful children; May they find the strength and courage to press on during this troubled time. May the memory of SFC William "Bill" Zapfe live on forever. "Sappers Lead The Way"

SFC Zapfe was a soldier's soldier. My husband has always been proud to serve in the same unit as this brave man. I know that Dave really respected SFC Zapfe's opinion and experience with all things Army. He mentioned after the Family Day trip out to the field why SFC Zapfe's vehicle was chosen as the one for all the kids and wives to climb in...apparently it was always in tip-top shape, super clean, etc. No surprise there. My favorite memory of SFC Zapfe is from the more recent 1-30 BN Family Day at the YMCA during the soccer tournament. He was pacing up and down the side of the field yelling at the Echo company team to step it up and run harder. They listened. This man loved life, the Army, and most importantly his family. We are here for you Conietha, Anastasia, Cameron, and Spencer. God bless SFC Zapfe.

I also served with this exceptional leader. He loved his job. His leadership style was unique. I learned a lot from this man. I was his gunner while in Iraq. Great sense of humor. Whenever I was around him all you could do was smile. He loved sports, love everything. Always good spirited. It was a shock to me when I heard about his death. This man was not afraid of any thing. The best platoon seargent u could ask for. He looked out for us. God bless this soldier, he is in a world where he don't have to watch his back.God bless his family. He has a special place in my heart. You won't be forgotten Sapper!

Mrs. Zapfe,
I knew SSG Zapfe very well. I served with him for a little over three years and he, by far, was one of the best leaders any company in the U.S. Army could ask for. SSG Zapfe was motivating, honest, fair, and dedicated to his soldiers and his job. I learned more from the training and advice SSG Zapfe gave to me than from anyone else I served with. SSG Zapfe was the type of man you could go to for any problem you had. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and he always put his soldiers above himself. SSG Zapfe was a man not afraid to take a stand for what was right. He constantly battled for the Engineers to make sure we weren't given the "short end of the stick." He always led by example, and no one set a better example than SSG Zapfe. He will truely be missed by all that knew him. My hope is that those who served along side him strive to become the leader and soldier he was. My condolences go out to you Mrs Zapfe, your children, and those soldiers serving under his command. I know with all my heart SSG Zapfe passed away doing the job he loved most. I ask that we not dwindle on the fact that SSG Zapfe is gone, but continue to live with the memories, advice, leadership, and bravery he enstilled in all of those who's lives he touched. The Army lost a true hero with the passing of SSG Zapfe. A Warrior has fallen, but his memory will live on in our hearts forever!

Hello, my name is Suzanne Morales. I personally know SFC William Zapfe and his family. I was his daughter’s, (Anastasia) first teacher. I will never forget Anastasia’s first day of pre-k, it was also my first year of teaching as well. I was so nervous and excited about that first day of pre-k. I stood in the doorway to greet all 20 of my new 4-year-old students and their excited and proud parents and family members. I can clearly remember SFC William Zapfe dressed in his Army attire, his wife Conietha, and Anastasia walking into my classroom. Anastasia was so poised for a 4-year-old yet excited about her new surroundings. Her parents beamed with pride, excitement, and love for their daughter. They asked me to pose for a picture with their daughter. This family was truly exceptional and the bond they shared was vividly reflected. This was just the beginning of my privilege to be acquainted with this extraordinary family. Since this time, August 2002, my family and the Zapfe family have shared several special memories; birthdays, Halloweens, and get-togethers. I received the call yesterday, 6/22/2007, that SFC William Zapfe was killed in Muhammad al Ali, Iraq, on June 19. I was in completed shock and disbelief. I would like for his loved ones and his proud country to know that SFC William Zapfe was truly a fine man in all the sense. He is the example of what a husband, father, and soldier clearly are. He will be forever missed and his sacrifice will always be treasured by me. I will never forget you “Zapfe”. Your example has touched many lives. My family loves you and misses you deeply. You will always live in our hearts, memories, and through your much-loved children!
