Jan Argonish Obituary
A veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom with nearly 10 years of service in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Sgt. Argonish volunteered to help train soldiers of the Afghan National Army. It was his third deployment since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Born Feb. 6, 1981, son of Nancy and Michael Argonish, Peckville, Sgt. Argonish was a 1999 graduate of Valley View High School, where he played football and was a member of the swim team. He joined the National Guard as a junior, with his parents' proud consent.
An accomplished soldier, Sgt. Argonish was a graduate of the Army's infantry and mortar schools and the tanker school at Fort Knox, Ky. He also served two years as a military recruiter. During his tour in Iraq, his duties included the capture and detention of several high-level fugitives.
He received numerous service awards, including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, Pennsylvania Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Medal, Gen. Thomas J. Stewart Medal, Pennsylvania Service Ribbon and the Army Achievement Medal.
Sgt. Argonish was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Peckville, and VFW Post 5544, Jessup. Since February 2006, he was employed as a corrections officer at the U.S. Penitentiary Canaan in Waymart.
An avid outdoorsman, Sgt. Argonish enjoyed hunting, fishing and riding motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles with his son, Jakub, and Talia Walsh, whom he planned to marry and called his "better half." He loved country music and classic cars, and attended a car show in Atlantic City, N.J., with his father every February. He missed the traditional trip just twice, when he was deployed.
Jan gave his life to secure a better, safer future for his son, family and all Americans. He believed in what he was doing and died defending his fellow soldiers against overwhelming opposition. He was a true hero who will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. There are many such lives, but there was only one Jan.
Along with his parents, Sgt. Argonish is survived by a son, Jakub, 8; a brother, Nicholas Argonish and wife, Leanne, West Chester; a sister, Elizabeth Conaghan and husband, Scott, Exton; maternal grandmother, Betty Louryk, Scranton; uncles, aunts, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Nicholas Louryk, and his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Anna Argonish.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 1101 Willow St., Peckville. Interment with military honors will be in St. Mary's Byzantine Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday, 4 to 9 p.m., at the church. Arrangements by James M. Margotta Funeral Home, 1019 Main St., Peckville. Every day I drive down Main Ave. I look up and see your banner and so does my daughter, every time she sees it she asks me who is that Mommy. I simply say that honey is a "HERO" in every way. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your ultimate sacrifice. Just know many miss you and think of you daily, and most honored just to have known you. Sgt Argo, I didn't forget the date. I was in Mongolia for a field op. I still think about you every day and have told all of my guys about you. It's now been 2 years since the day that I responded to your ambush. You gave your life trying to help a fellow soldier. I finally made my way down the cliff to ya, but it was too late. I had the honor of carrying your son to the plane as he was headed home. I never knew him, personally. However, having been apart of honoring him as he left Afghanistan, he has forever touched my life. I wear a bracelet bearing his name and the place he fell. In this way, I can make sure that his service, his sacrifice, and his story continues to touch others when people ask me: "What is that you are wearing." I take pride in telling people the little I know about your son and giving a face to the precious sacrifice he has made to our country.

It's going on a year now. A year since I responded on the QRF and was, by all accounts, too late. I rappelled down the cliff to get to you, but there was nothing I could do. So I held your hand and said a prayer. I stayed with you for about an hour before we were able to get you up to your helo. I waited with about 150 others as you were taken out that night to another helo. Like the others, I hung my head as I said goodbye. I wish I could have done something for you. Anything, that could have repaid you for who you were. I miss you as does so many others. Your post is still being stood; by your brothers. You will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, brother.

I knew Jan since the first day I walked into the armory, fresh from signing my contract with the Guard in 2002. When you are a private coming into a new unit, it isn't always easy. Jan made it easy. He was always kind, always funny, and always made you feel like you were important. I agree with Matt Chase, he would've given up anything for any of his fellow soldiers. He is, and always will be, missed.

Having served with Jan for years I had the privledged opportunity to see his generosity and leadership during our weekend drills and deployment to Iraq. He would'nt hesitate to go without any of his equipment to ensure one of our privates were well equiped. I've literally seen him give up cold weather gear to his soldiers and rough it during feild excersizes. He will never be forgotten.

I never met Sgt. Jan Argonish. However, in June of 2006, he and his fellow guardsmen rescued three near-drowning horses from a barn that belonged to my Aunt and Uncle. He risked himself and did something truly kind and beautiful, and my family will remember him always.

I would just like to personally pass along my sincerest condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting SGT Argonish and the rest of his Easy Riders team while working at Camp Dubs in Afghanistan. Every time he came back to the camp he would drop in at our office to say hi and to throw the base ball around. Again I'm very sorry for your family's loss. Argo was a great man and brave soldier.

I'm sorry for your loss. Jan was a friend, a mentor, and a fellow soldier. He will be sadly missed, but the lessons we all learned from him, and the person Jan was will never be forgotten.
Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them.

I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.

I have known the Argonish family for pretty much my whole life..what fond memories come to mind when thinking of them. Mike, Nancy, Nick, Jan and Liz, what amazing and special people you all are! My heartfelt sympathy to the Argonish family in the loss of Jan. I did not know Jan, ( I lived in the Easton/Bangor PA area 52 years) but my heart is broken and I am saddened for your loss of such a fine young person and hero. To Jan's parents, Jakub, Talia, family and friends words cannot begin to express the loss of our HERO Jan. I feel privileged to have known him and be a part of his life both as a good friend and as a soldier. It is said that HEROS never die because the spirit of a warrior and his legacy live on forever. Myself and my family were lucky to known and been touched by Jan. I was lucky enough to work with Jan for 3 years. In that 3 years Jan showed me a diffrent way of looking at things. One of the most important things was to live life to the fullest and that is excatly what he did. Myself and my family will always have an ANGEL on our shoulders. I have just learned of the death of Sergeant Jan Argonish. As the State Chaplain of the Georgia Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. His life and his love of country epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe him ..!! To All Who Loved Jan,
What a beautiful, strong and loving family he has! Is it any surprise that he was the wonderful person he was? As a member of this family by marriage, I am truly blessed. Their genuine care and kindness they display to all was greatly apparent in the tribute shown to the Argonish family at Jan's viewing. They have touched so many lives! Jan's life so beautifully told the story of who this family is. He had an incredible spirit - loving, giving, caring, and yet so unassuming. People were drawn to him and so many would say their lives are different because of him. I am eternally thankful to have called him my nephew. My pride overflows. He accomplished so much in his short time with us and he will live on in all those he touched. To Nancy, Michael, Lizzie, Scott, Nick, Leanne, Talia and Jakub - you inspire me by your love and strength. May God bless you today and always. May you be forever comforted knowing that Jan's influence will live on in countless people.

To the parents of Jan, I know how hard it is to loose your child to war. Your heart breaks and you have so many questions that are unanswered. I don't have those answers but as another Gold Star Mother I do have emotional support to offer you when the time comes and you want to reach out for someone who has gone through this same loss. Sometimes it is just better to be able to talk, cry or vent to another and I want you to know that I'm here for you. God has blessed me with the strength to do this and I'm thankful for that. We had the pleasure of meeting Jan while we were in Jessup taking care of my sister Mary Lou Rose during her illness in 2003. My husband and I will never forget just what Jan stands for - he stands for strength, courage, and love of mankind. He loved his country and proved it by defending it to the fullest. Please know how Deeply Sorry I am, for the loss of Sgt. Jan Argonish. As a parent, who has lost a daughter suddenly and having lost a brother to war...I am aware of the deep and devastating pain that you are experiencing. The overwhelming heartache, seems to surface through our shock, as the time passes. Please hang on to your Faith and know that you will get through this.
