Randy, we never got to meet, however we are eternally brothers. I served in the US Army on Active Duty from March 96-Aug 02. The above quote happens to be a very powerful quote that puts freedom in perspective. Thank you for your sacrifice.

My brother is in the Marines, and was in Iraq at the same time, and even though there is nothing I can do to take away the pain or bring you peace in time of sorrow, but I want you to know that I'm praying for him and his family knowing he's in a better place. He was a true hero, and I thank him for being a member of the the armed forces and defending his country. I'm still trying to have that park named for you, Randy. I'm sure it seems to your family that everyone has forgotten the ultimate sacrifice you so unselfishly have given, but there are those of us who haven't forgotten. Once the park is known as Shelton Park, your name will be mentioned by all who will be using it and that way NO ONE will ever forget. Paul is still over there and dear Lord please allow him to return. He did a shout out to you on your Birthday on My Space and lots of people commented and sent their love. You are not forgotten!!!

I dont think a day goes by that i dont think of you. These years that have passed dont seem to get any easier. To me, it is just not fair and ill never seem to understand... I dont even know where to begin to even try to. How could someone so full of life, so radiant, so brave, be gone forever? Just like that? And at such a young age. How could the evil of this battle take the best of you? I find myself asking these questions and still no answers. But i think of you as never even leaving. Your here, with all of us...everyday. Your courageous abilities made it all possible for you to leave this world not only as soldier and hero but as a legend. Despite how much this has upset the ones who love you dearly it has also made us very proud at the same time. Feeling that sense of pride is the only thing that has helped us through this awful tragedy, i speak for everyone, im sure. Your duty now is to watch over your family and friends...you are our angel now. You'll never be forgotten Randy. Love you. Miss you so much. Both you and Matt. R.I.P.

To the Shelton family: Randy was and always will be my best friend. I met Randy the very first day I arrived at Ft Benning GA. I could tell he was a great person. From that day on, Randy and I were always hanging out. We were roomates at Ft Riley. Its still very hard for me to cope with the fact that hes gone. I miss him. Although I talk to him in my prayers at times, its not the same. Im sure you can imagine. I didnt make it to the funeral services last year and feel horrible about it. He was my best friend and he would have been there if it were me. I owe him a visit. If you would be so kind as to send me the information on how I can visit him, it would mean the world to me. You can reach me at [email protected]. My phone number is 251 786 3724. I want to make sure I express my deepest condolences to you. It must be hard to lose a son like Randy. My heart goes out to you and the rest of your family. Thank you.

Dear family of Pvt. Randol S. Shelton,
We want to say thank you. We understand that no words can be adequate for your sorrow. We certainly do not want to intrude upon your privacy. As Americans we want you to know that we deeply appreciate the ultimate sacrifice your loved one has made for all of us. We also would like for you to be aware that with this letter comes our special concern and prayers for you. We are all safer because young men and women who love their country, and know the value of a free nation, are willing to put themselves in harms way, and lay down their lives to keep this nation free and safe for all of us.
Your sacrifice is also very great. We know that we can give little comfort; however, the knowledge that your loved one did not die in vain, but died in the service of our country, gives each of us a noble example of the value of life, and the responsibility of freedom. We hope this will bring pride and comfort to you.
We at Gethsemane Church believe that there is purpose to life. We send this letter with our deepest appreciation for the greatest of sacrifices, you and your loved one have given to this country. We know it is not enough, but please allow us to assure you that your loved one is not forgotten.
Very Sincerely
Frank G. Noyes

To the Family of Randy Shelton,
I assisted Run For the Fallen on Day 63 from Waynesboro to Shannon Hill, VA. Randy's flag was placed near Ferncliff, VA. After 3 weeks, VDOT began to remove any attached to road signs, not realizing what they were; on the off-chance that would happen, I asked them to save & notify me of any that came their way, and so, I have your boy's flag & card attached to it; #3747 placed by Jon Bellona on August 16th, 2008.
I would like to send it to you, or put it back (on a tree)--whichever you prefer, just let me know.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Randol, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

To the families of Shelton, Murray, and Lane,
Please accept our sympathy and prayers for peace in your hearts and minds. Your soldiers are heros, and so are each of you.
Our warriors in theater will be comrades forever, not only on earth, but with even more certainty of spirit beyond these shores.
Our son was with your sons in that vehicle and in that moment when everything changed, for them and for us. And the world changed too, in ways that might not be quantified, but absolutely are qualified; for we all have been served by their sacrifice.
On the very first day that our son was conscious enough to learn of your loss, he asked of them name by name, and his unhesitating response was "Contact their families and tell them, I would have gladly taken any of their places".
So that a buddy would live, even at the cost of his own life, is the soldier's way of love. For his buddies and for all of us, your soldier made that ultimate expression of love.
Their souls are bound together forever. Our hearts are with you always.

Family and Friends
“The most important things in life are the hardest to say, because words diminish them.”
A horror fiction author wrote that…
This man is responsible for writing some terrible things. Awful things…Ack!
Although…
What begins this proves he is capable of some wonderful words. Beauty in prose.
I mention this here with all of my love, all my being…
I have witnessed something truly astonishing. So unbearable, ugly. Yet in some respects magnificent and magic.
A beautiful, terrific, goofy, smiling boy (a little kid still to me. Yet a bigger man)…Beautiful.
We seldom show emotions as earnestly as when our loved ones go.
As I anticipated the services, I assumed I would have to shut my eyes or turn my gaze away…Too unthinkable…is there a bigger shame? Shame on us. Then again…I could not look away.
So many eyes, so many tears. Such different colors. All shades. We all blend. I saw all the children of God. In their eyes unfolding the funeral, the burial of a beautiful little boy (also a bigger man).
What a fine group of family, friends, strangers. It took me all that I have, all that I ever had; to remain on my feet…I am overwhelmed…
With all those who have gone before us. I have a new hero. An unlikely hero. A beautiful, goofy, smiling, kid. The bravest of men amongst the breach. On the beach at some other place…
When I stare into the darkness I will see you as a light.
We are gorgeous and beautiful
murderous and ugly
Shame on us
And then again…
Family and friends,
Familiar strangers
Beautiful Randy…

To the family of Randy Shelton, I know what it is like to lose someone very close. The pain brought by his passing will lessen with time, and in its place will be the great memories he left with you. Randy was one of my best friends and I loved him deeply. I will never forget the laughs we had at night in the field freezing inside of our slleping bags, the times we cussed the Army and the brotherhood that made it all worthwhile. We will all see you again, it may just take us a while, we are not done down here yet. Thank you for all you were to me. Love Paul.

My dear Grandson Randy,
Today was going to be your Welcome Home Party. In the last message from you on my answering machine, you sounded so happy. You thanked me for the party and said you were really looking forward to it. Then,as on every other message from Iraq, you said that everything was o.k. and that you love me. It seems impossible that I'll never see you again to tell you how much I LOVE YOU!
The only way I can console my grief is to think of your smiling face at peace with the angels ( I hope they are pretty.) and that you are surrounded by the loving arms of Grandma and Grandpa Gruber and Grandpa Shelton.
I remember your Graduation in Georgia, I was so honored to be there with you, your mom and dad, and brother Bryan. Amanda was so dissappointed not to be there too. We were all so proud of you as we watched the ceremonies and we laughed with you as they took your Graduation picture. We have been proud of you every minute since then and will always carry you in our broken hearts with endless pride and love.
