I decided instead of posting on the anniversary of you being taken away from us that I would rather honor the last day that we spoke. It was only a brief conversation on the phone about accountability of your Soldiers, but I remember you asking how I was doing and somehow making me laugh. You were a great man John. I may not think about you everyday, but I do think of you often. RIP Brother!

To the family of Army Sgt. 1st Class John Tobiason on Memorial Day 2014:
My 13 year old son and I travelled to Long Island, NY this weekend to volunteer and run in the 7th annual US Marine Corps Cpl Christopher G. Scherer "I Did the Grid" 4 Mile Run on May 24 in East Northport, NY. This run is in honor of Cpl Christopher Scherer who was KIA in Operation Iraqi Freedom on July 21, 2007 and all the fallen who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Each runner has four names of fallen service members on their bibs. We were asked to think about and pray for each fallen hero for one of the four miles of the run. SFC Tobiason's name and service information were on my son's bib. It was a privilege to run in his honor. SFC Tobiason is in our hearts and prayers this Memorial Day. God bless. Sincerely, Polly Papsadore

To the family of Sgt. 1st Class John J. Tobiason:
As you may know, the Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation has honored your loved one at its Memorial Day Sunday worship service (each year in May) … since the time of your fallen hero's ultimate sacrifice. We will continue to pay tribute to our nation's veterans … lest we ever forget!

Now we would like to honor you … as the next-of-kin … who have also paid a great price on the altar of liberty. On Sunday 29 September at 11:00 a.m. we will host a Gold Star Family Sunday.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship … as we pay tribute to your sacrifice. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain (Colonel-Retired) Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “By Dying, We Live.” The special music will be the husband/wife vocal/piano — Wickman Duo. Following the worship experience, your family is invited to attend a social time in our Fellowship Hall … with some light refreshments.

As this historic chapel has limited seating, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

To the family of Sgt. 1st Class John J. Tobiason:
The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (651/286-7296) or email the office ([email protected]) and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday 25 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sunday, 26 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Sorry it has been awhile John. I always find it hard to put my thoughts into words, so bear with me. This weekend is for you and for everyone who has paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Honoring you and the countless others. I will never forget you John, and I am sure there are many others who won't as well. RIP John.

My name is Branch, but on 28 November, 2007, I was 2LT Sinnott. I was there that night and for years I've carried such painful memories of what I saw and what I wasn't able to do. I wish I could've helped more, I hope you knew I was by your side and that I cared. I'm so sorry I haven't been able to face you or your family and that I've tried to forget because of how much it hurt to see someone wearing the same uniform I do slipping away. I didn't know you but because you and I wear the same uniform, I loved you like my brother. I wish your family all the peace and healing they deserve, and after reading the guest book, I sincerely wish I could've known you better; sounds like you were a great guy.

Dear Family;
Project Compassion is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. Artist, founder and President; Kaziah Hancock will be coming to Minnesota in a few months, approximately March 2010. She has been asked by one of your local media agencies to attend an event to honor our Country and the State of Minnesota’s fallen soldiers/heroes. We would be truly honored for the opportunity to paint a portrait of your hero to present it to you and your family. If you have already received a portrait of your hero from us, please keep in mind that we have been approved by our sponsors to paint a second portrait of each soldier as long as it is requested in behalf of the heroes Mother, Father and/or spouse. We only paint these 100% free to the families because of our sponsors. Please visit www.heropaintings.com or contact me directly at [email protected]. We would be truly honored to have a chance to learn more about each of these fine soldiers, our modern day heroes!
Very sincerely,

My deepest condolences in the loss of this HERO!

My heart just breaks to sign yet another guestbook for a fallen HERO.

I am the mom of a wounded soldier, and, I lost a cousin in Vietnam, so I know your pain.

I'd like to extend my condolences & prayers, through song...for John, my deep appreciation for his life, service & sacrifice.

Below are the lyrics to a song inspired by the loss of another John, our son's comrade in IRAQ, CPL. John Paul Barta, KIA - Dec. 23, 2006.

All my music is free, and, may something you hear be a blessing to you & bring you some comfort.

May God hold John in His loving arms, forever, and, may He keep you in His tender care until you meet again.

All your friends been telling stories, John

You go on home now, son ... get some rest.

I worked with John in Iraq for a little more than six months. With his help, I was promoted to Sergeant during our deployment together. He helped me study for the promotion board whenever there was any free time. We used to go to lunch and dinner together every day. I remember he used to love to eat double cheeseburgers and french fries. He usually would have two for each meal. We would also do the crossword puzzle in Stars and Stripes together every day as well. We became very good friends over the course of our deployment. I am so sorry for your loss.

To the family of SFC John J. Tobiason:

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, and mine. Two nights ago while listening to some music on my computer, the song 'Winds of Change' came on and I decided to search for the person that was my roomate and runnin partner when that song was first released. It was so difficult to read the Yahoo search results.
Toby and I had so many good times, and I wish I had kept up with him. Ive read the entire Guest Book, and it seems as though nothing changed with who he was and what he was all about. I couldnt turn to my wife to let her know that Toby had passed, because I lost her this past December. She knew him and liked him as much as all the rest of us did.

My fellow cooks in the 72d Signal Battalion made what is considered one of the most painful jobs in the Army a joy, and I guarantee you that everyone who worked with him there would be just as saddened from this news as I am. Everyone enjoyed being around him, whether in a club or waking at 0 dark 30 in the field so we could get breakfast cooked before the rest of the troops came to eat at 0600.

Toby and I served together from early 1988 until I PCSd in March 1990. Ill always remember him, and regret not being able to talk with him, just one more time.

To the family of Sgt. 1st Class John J. Tobiason:

The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Memorial Day Sunday worship service at 11:00 a.m. on 24 May 2009. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the neighboring states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.

I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, U.S. Army Chaplain Col. Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled “Answering the Highest Call.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and place poppies at each of the crosses. An honor guard squad will be on hand to fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the memorial garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception in the Chapel’s Fellowship Hall.

As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (612/970-7866) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans’ name and the number of persons attending. For more information about the Foundation or driving directions to the historic chapel at Fort Snelling, visit our website at: www.fortsnellingmcf.org Special rates for nearby hotels will be available. For more information call (612/970-7866) or email ([email protected]) the office and leave your name and contact information.

Also, beginning at dusk (8:30 p.m.) on Sat 23 May through dawn (6:30 a.m.) on Sun 24 May, a “Prayer Vigil for Peace” will be held in the sanctuary of the Chapel. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one’s cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.

If you are not able to attend, we pray that you would find comfort in knowing that our prayers are with you and all of the fallen heroes.

Respectfully,
Leila Campbell

I miss opening the door on the weekends when he came back to the U.S and welcoming him in with a big hug, I miss his insulting remarks and his sarcastic attitude (Because that was our silly relationship, our friendship), I miss baking cookies with my Mother and Sister and sending it too him and the troops he was with, I miss listening to him and my Father play music (John was insane on the drums) but most of all, I just miss John.

Sometimes, I keep forgeting he isn't alive anymore.
...
And that makes it a hundred times more painful.

Who am I going to speak German with now?

...I never did say goodbye.

I worked with John in Iraq and knew him well. I was tasked with building his memorial for the Chapel as well as the Battalion HQ memorial. He will be forever remembered by all Soldiers who enter that building on pad 11 at Camp Liberty and by the Soldiers of the 15th PSB. Please accept my deepest sympathies. Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you.

Here we are at the end of another year. My heart still is heavy with the loss of a dear friend who always made me smile and be !!
Toby was my forever buddy who is with me as I am....everyday..
He loved his military life and was a very dedicated soldier to all those he served. His willingness to go the extra mile for anyone in his care was such a great trait he had. Never putting himself first in any action there was to handle.
May his family know that there will be many memories of yours and my HERO talked of always!!! Never to be forgotten....
Toby is resting now and is enjoying the peace and freedom that he so willingly sought for all of us in the USA.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know John, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

On 28 November 2007, I was devastated and shocked at the news of SFC Tobiason's death. I had helped him get started on a project he was working on just two days prior (on 26 November 2007). In the eight months I knew and worked with him, I learned: that he was so proud of serving his beloved country and it was as though he felt this was his life's mission. He loved his family so much and spoke of them quite often. He loved his hometown and his 100 year old home. He used to tell me of how he would retire from the army and live a simple life in the woods. He had a genuine care and love for people and one of the best ways he expressed this was by hugging. SFC Tobi knew that there is an unspoken assurance and comfort that comes with a hug and this was his gift from God. Anyone who knew him for any period of time, know this is true. You see, I thought I had lost a friend forever. I was wrong... through reading all the heartfelt entries in this guest book, I have learned so much more about his life and the positive impact and fond memories others have of him. He is even more wonderful than I could have imagined. Please keep his memory alive by continuing to add entries and pics here. I know SFC Tobi would also ask that we keep the memories of all our fallen heroes alive. To the mother of SFC Tobiason and his two remaining siblings, job well done! Your Angel was well prepped for his mission by your love and caring and everything he experienced in his life. I will never forget!

SFC Tobiason served honorably and proudly in my former unit, the 15th Personnel Services Battalion, while in Iraq. Thoughts of our interaction are forever imprinted in my heart and on my mind. Our last conversation was about the holiday season, his reenlistment ceremony, and our upcoming redeployment. His life mattered. He made a difference. He will never be forgotten. From The Heart,

I had the pleasure of not only serving with John, but also get to know him as a person. He was a wonderful friend and a hero to us all. The entire time I knew him was when we were deployed to Iraq, with the 1st CAV Division. He always had a smile on his face. We would talk about home alot. It seemed like every conversation we had always led to him talking about going home to see and spend time with his mom. He will always be my hero.

I was sad to find out that John had died defending our country. He is a hero and so are all that have served. I knew him from 1st grade to 12th and he was always light hearted and joked around alot. He used to challenge me to fight all the time and then laugh, I was 6'3" and 230 lbs then. Although I never saw him again after high school I felt the loss.
God bless his family.

John "Tobi" Tobiason,

Memorial day has come and gone. While I sat and saw news stories on Monday about memorial day I could only think of the sacrafice John made for our contry and the freedom we all enjoy.

Tobi, I have only good memories of our friendship in high school. I know you would never admitt to being a hero, because you saw this as your duty... The same way I look at my job as a Firefighter.

To me Tobi you will always be remembered as a Great American Soldier and a true Friend. Someday I will see you again, when that day arrives - Just like when I went to my locker at Kennedy Sr High, I'll look forward to hearing you hollar out, "Heyyy Chimp."

You'll never be forgotten.
