BRO! Back on jump status again. I was sweating bullets since it has been a hot minute since I was on jump status. My heart felt like it was going to pound outside of my chest. As I stood up and hooked up and got my pat, there was one more "GOOD TO GO" I had a perfect exit and a perfect landing. Thanks brother. Love and miss you.

Dear Family and Friends of Staff Sgt. Michael Gabel,
I am so sorry for your loss. I met Mike when he came into the USO at DFW Airport several years ago (he was returning to Kuwait on the outbound R&R fligt). I noticed that he was eating a lot of ice cream, so I suggested that he might want to stop. He told me that he could not get ice cream where he was going (Afghanistan), so he was eating as much as he could. He began to charm we volunteers with his humor and outgoing personality. I sent him a few boxes of junk food. He sent me some beautiful handmade Afghan stone necklaces which everyone admired (I shared them with Ellen and Mickie, who also met him that day).
All of our visitors at the USO are special, but some stand out in your mind. Mike is one that I will always remember.
Rest in Peace, Mike.

Letter To My Fallen Brother
You always watched my back for me brother; I only wish I could have returned the favor. You would probably slap me around a bit for saying that, but I can’t help but wonder if I was there for you I might have been able to keep you safe the way you kept me safe. Not to worry, I will still keep that promise I made and take that trip we planed; I will leave a seat open for you. It saddens me you can’t come with me now; my pack feels heavier without you here. Anyway I know you hate all that bleeding heart stuff, but it sure feels just like that. I will miss you and I will never forget you. Every time the colors rise and fall I will hold that salute up high just a little longer so you know I still think of you. You can finally rest now; I will take your watch from now on, just check in on me from above now and again. I love you brother.

For Michaels Family; For several months, I had been Michaels "angel" and for some of his platoon comrades. As a VN veteran, when all this came about I wanted to help in some way. I joined Soldiers Angels and got to know your wonderful son thru letters and packages we sent. I did get some pics back which is rare so our relationship became something very special to me. It has taken this long to write you to express to you how much I loved that young man. His passing has been difficult for me and such a deep loss for you all. I hope you will find some comfort to know that there were so many people who loved what he was and what he stood for. We are a greatful family. God Bless you all.

To the Gabel family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you now over a year since your loss. I met Mike in the spring of 2007 while on holiday in Florence, Italy, and was able to see him again while visiting Venice a month later. He was a kind man with the best of intentions, as well as an extremely passionate American. Despite my being a devout 'yankee democrat', he was able to convince me how and why this war is no longer purposeless and help me relate to why he felt he needed to be a part of it for the Iraqi and Afghani people and their independence. His passion for these people that he did not even know, and his willingness to return on tour over and over to ensure them better lives, is what truly convinced me of his sincerity and loyalty to America and our cause.
I remember him speaking fondly of his mother, and her scrap booking skills, his native Louisiana, and the men that he patrolled with side by side daily. He showed me the city of Venice through his eyes, and whenever I return I will think of him.
Though our time together was brief I will never forget Mike, he made an impact on me. Mike taught me tolerance for things that I could not control and for this I thank him deeply. He felt he was born to be a soldier, and I believe this to be true. He was one of the bravest men I ever met.
I will keep Mike and the Gabel family in my prayers forever. I thank you for lending him to me and the people that he fought for. He may not have won the war, but he left a strong impact on all the people that he ever met, atleast, I know this rings true for me.
With the utmost sincerity,
Kali Angelina Ferrara

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I want to thankyou Michael for serving our country. They work so hard and strive to make our country a better place and to keep us safe. Our prayers are with our soilders.
I remember David, Michael and Joann as they were children. When we went over to Janie and Robert's house all of the children would go and play football. John and Cathy I was so heart broken to hear of his death from Janie. When she told me, Johnny and I were on the side of the road broken down. I went home and called my children to tell them and they wanted to let you know how, even that they were not related they still thought of Michael as a cousin. We all took it hard. We love you and will continue to pray for all of you.

Mike,
We all miss you, but we know you are with us. I gotta tell you, you always brightened my day whenever I saw you. You always had something funny to say to me or to tease me about. You pushed your soldiers to the limits and they respected you and looked up to you for that... but I would NEVER race you up that climbing rope no matter how many times you picked on me about it! I know you see me and you don't want me to cry for you, but I have to, at least for now.

I just read about your loss today. Oh, your darling boy---he sounds so wonderful. Our Army Infantryman son was wounded in Afghanistan...he's recovering. I first met SGT Gabel when I took over AT-2, D co, 2nd BN, 504th PIR in June 03, and was instantly impressed with him. We served together in Iraq from August 03 until April 04. There was no greater warrior, no better leader, no harder worker, no more committed friend. He set the standard for me of what a Squad leader should be, and all have paled in comparison to his example. His subordinates admired him and aspired to his level of expertise. His superiors turned to him when the job had to get done. His friends relied on him. The world truly lost one of the great Oaks.

To the Gabel Family:
I remember Michael from my childhood when I would visit my good friend Joanne. At the time, he was a bothersome older brother who liked getting into typical little boy trouble. I regret that I did not know him in his adult life and the honorable soldier he became and will eternally be remembered as. Attending the funeral of Michael Gabel today was a suprisingly peaceful atmosphere and a type of funeral I have never experienced. I was humbled by the presence of so many other defenders of our country and proud to have once known the young Michael Gabel. The recessional hymn said it best..."There is no greater love says the Lord, than to lay down your life for a friend". Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could all live those words as Michael so bravely did?
It was wonderful to see the Gabel family today. I hope we can keep in touch in the future. God bless.

Mr. and Mrs. Gabel -
Our son is serving with the 173rd in Afghanistan, and was on this patrol with your son. John let us know of the loss of his "brother" and friend, who made the supreme sacrifice. We send our condolences to your family. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May the Lord bless you with comfort and strength.

I am saddened to hear about Mike's passing. I wrestled all four years at Lee High with Mike. We started together our freshman year and we were partners - he actually started 2 weeks ahead of me and showed me the ropes as I was trying to catch up after football season.
Mike had it rough. He had a lung condition that made him very winded. He used an inhaler and wrestling almost jeopardized his life. I remember when a doctor told he and his father that he should stop - but he never gave up.
Mike struggled in his first three years. He was never the most talented. However, by our senior year, I finally realized why Mike was such a great wrestler and such a huge asset to our team. As his dad said, "although he lost some matches because of his lungs, his heart never gave up." I am in tears as I write those words because it was so true. Michael was an unsung hero of our senior year. We won championships and went undefeated in dual meets and I KNOW it had to do with his strong leadership.
I also remember the support John gave his son. It was such a beautiful thing to see such great love and support from a father. It was almost like John was a part of our team.
Mike had the biggest heart of any of us on that team. He was a humble guy and always gave 110%. I know he loved serving his country and I know he used that same wrestling work ethic in the military.
Mike, I'm sad to see you go brother. You are a great man and we love you and miss you. I pray that you are at peace right now in heaven and I hope we can meet again someday and talk about those great days at Lee High.
God bless you Sgt. Michael Gabel. Thank you for your unselfish service to our country.

I also wanted all of you to know that the scouts still put flags on all the graves at Port Hudson on Flag day as we are back in the scouts with Derricks son Alex is in the cub scouts. My heart goes out to you for your loss.

I knew SSG Gabel for a short time last year when we went to Infantryman BNCOC together at Fort Benning. He was a great guy, quick to smile and to laugh. He will be missed. My condolences for your loss.
