Nathan Hardy Obituary

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ; Special Warfare Operator Chief Petty Officer Nathan H. Hardy (SEAL), 29, of Durham, N.H., was killed while conducting combat operations in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom Feb. 4, 2008. He was based out of the Hampton Roads, Va. area.

He was born in Falmouth Hospital on Cape Cod on Dec. 28, 1978. He grew up in Kirkland, Wash., and Moon Township, Penn., before moving to Durham, N.H. in 1988. He dreamed of becoming a Navy SEAL at a young age. Through his years on the soccer and lacrosse fields at Oyster River High School, he discovered and developed the fierce competitiveness and team-first mentality that would later serve him so well on his road to achieving that goal.

After graduating high school he enlisted in the Navy. In doing so he carried on a naval legacy from his grandfathers. Charles "Bucky" Harris served on the PT 109 with John F. Kennedy, and Dr. Irad B. Hardy served as a combat surgeon with the Fourth Marine Division on Tarawa, Saipan and Iwo Jima.

Chief Hardy graduated from boot camp at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in January 1998. The same month, he entered Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in Coronado, Calif., Class 221. Following graduation from BUD/S in May 1998, and other than attending various schools, he served his entire career with East Coast-based SEAL Teams.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, three Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, three Sea Service deployment awards, NATO Medal, Expert Rifle Medal, and the Sharpshooter Pistol Medal.

In 2005, while attending the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, Hardy married the love of his life, Mindi Buck. In 2007, Mindi gave birth to their son, Parker Hall. He lived his dream both at work, where he served the cause of freedom against terror and fear, and at home, where he was a devoted husband and father.

In addition to his wife, son, mother, father and brother, he leaves a grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Chief Hardy will be buried at Arlington Memorial Cemetery on Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. A celebration of his life will also be held at a later date in his hometown of Durham.

In lieu of flowers, friends may send donations to the "Nate Hardy Memorial Fund" care of Navy Federal Credit Union, Building 200, FTC Dam Neck, Virginia Beach, VA, 23461.

Hello. You don't know me nor did I have the honor of knowing your loved one. I am a military brat who is honoring a fallen hero each day and I just wanted to reach out and let you know that today I am honoring and remembering CPO Hardy. I have been reading as many articles as I can and watching the loving tributes on youtube that were posted and sharing them on my fb page for others to know his name. Please know that CPO Hardy's name is being mentioned today and I truly appreciate his service to our country and the sacrifice that you all as his family have faced over the years since his death. Please know that I will never forget...because heroes never die. Peace ~ Suzanne

My deepest sympathies to you and your family. Its very sad, but I just found out yesterday on the moon site of fb that Nate had passed. I grew up with Josh and think of him from time to time. Pearl Jam songs bring him to mind with a huge smile. Josh was a funny and great person and I miss him til this day. Nate grew up with my brother Bob. Wonderful family and im praying god.has helped you through your losses. Nate was an amazing child that became a hero. Josh musically inclined. Steve and Donna you were always great people and did a great job raising the boys. I wanted you to know Josh and Nate will always be in my heart and I will forever think of their smiles and the wonderful men they were.

Nate my friend, I had not only the honor, but the privilege to spend two plus months with you in the United States Navy. We were in Bootcamp together, we slept across from one another. We shared many laughs together, we made the most of that bitter cold Chicago winter together. I knew within 10 minutes of meeting you, you were a special kid. I see now that I was right. You will always be held in the highest regard to me, a man with Honor, Courage and Commitment to the degree that few attain. I wish I could have known you later in life, perhaps well see each other again my friend.

Your buddy always,

I have watched the video Short life, Long reach on youtube.com for a while and it never gets old. Nathan is my hero even though I don't know him. He has inspired me greatly. Like he did after high school I to want to follow my dream of being a NAVY SEAL. Nathan Hardy is my hero.

Dear Nate,
Not a day goes by that I do not think of you, your parents, Ben and even Josh. I was going through some old schol photos of you and John and came across one of you in your Speedo at an Otters practice! Don't worry I won't
post it!.

I was in town the other day, and a friend asked whhat the stones in the center of the square were for (across from young, just uder the flag pole.)
So I took them over and showed them your name. I told them about you and neveer realised I had tears in my eyes, til I was handed a tissue. I am one of the lucky Mother's, John is safe. His contract ends soon. Having been on this side of military service, I will never feel at rest until all of your buddies, find their way home. Tonight I was at the airport as three Army Soliders were returniung from Iraq. It was an honnor to be there.

I meet an FRG Lady that knows your MOM and was told they keep in close contact. It is nice to know this bond of being a military Mom, keeps us connected. Many nights I will wake up and think of your paernts, pray form them and hope they are healing. I also pray from Mindi and Patrick. But most of all I remember the last time I saw you, and when you truned to say good-by, your smile burned a spot forever in my heart.

You will never be forgotten.

I know you are Navy, but SEMPER FI really says it all!

Yesterday September 1, 2008 marked the official transfer of US control of the Anbar Province back to the Iraqi people. It occurred to me that warrior heroes like Nate Hardy who have made the ultimate sacrifice there did not die for vainglory but for the principles of freedom. God Bless you Nate and thanks for your service. Like the souls of brave soldiers gone before us..."It is not for glory, nor riches nor honors that we fight but for freedom, that which we would give up but with our lives" (Declaration at Arbroath Abbey 1320).

My name is ITC(Sel) Wayne A. Holloman and I was given a task to chose a CPO that has fallen in the war. I chose CPO Nathan H. Hardy not knowing who he was at first. After reading his BIO, I was deeply touched and moved by the courage he displayed while defending our country and freedom. I would like to express my deepest condolences to his family. I lost my sister almost 2 years ago and I think of her everyday keeping her spirit alive. I know Nathan’s family is doing the same. I pray that I can become half the man Nathan was and CPO. God Bless!

March 24, 2008

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

My heart felt condolences to Mindi,Parker,Steve,Donna,Ben,Uncle Erl,all other family members and the Gold Team. Nate will always be a hero to us all!

I recently was reminded of my last conversation with Nate at Chrismas where I asked him to tell me about what he does when he is out there. He humbly replied " I do my job..." Nate elaborated some, by telling me he truly has two families... One being Mindi (his wife),Parker (his son).etc and the other being his Team. He then told me that he would never let either of them down...(Nate believed strongly in what he was doing..)

I know that the Team is still out there and must be greatly effected by the loss of Nate and Mike. They continue to do the job that is needed for all of us to have our freedom preserved. I thank God for the gold Team and all of our srevice people. Let us never forget the price they and their families pay for our freedom.

Dear Donna, Stephen, Ben, Mindi & Parker,

Words cannot express my condolances to all of you. Though Moon Township is long ago, I will always remember first meeting you Donna - with Ben and Jeff's kindergarten class. Nate in tow as I had Doug. The three Hardy boys and the three Barrett boys sled riding for hours at Allard - one piece snow suits and the "moon boots". Soccer teams and swim teams always included the boys. Two of my sons served in the Marine Corp, and both went to Iraq, but as we have talked about...they only had one tour each...I am blessed to have my sons, now civilians, near by. Thank you for sharing Nate with us and our country. He was a gift to all. I hope one day we might visit again. In the meantime, I'll keep in touch. Ben, Jeff sends his best to you. He now has a son that is into legos as much as you two were.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I am proud to have met Chief Hardy, although only briefly, before he made Chief. Even as a PO1, he was one of those people who made an indelible impression on everyone he met. He was a genuine human being, insistant on being called 'just Nate', and I will never forget his demonstrated devotion to his shipmates and his team, and the invaluable lessons he taught so many of us through sheer example. I can think of no greater honor than to give it all in service to our Nation, and we will certainly see him again some glorious day.

Words cannot describe the sadness and pain of losing a child. Although I didn't know Nathan I have known you and Steve for many years growing up in Waltham, MA and know that your son, if only a small measure of who you both are was obviously a very special young man.
It is with great sadness and much appreciation for his sacrifice to his country that I pray for you and his family. Know that he has a very special place in heaven. I thank you for giving your country your son so selflessly to protect all of us. Love, Jacquie

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

To Donna, Steve, Ben, Mindi, and Parker,
Although we are not close, we are related. I am Jean's (Terry's wife) sister. When I saw this"guest book" on line, I just had to let you know how much you all have been in our thoughts and prayers. I cannot even begin to imagine the inner strength that you have had to call into "action" to be able to even put one foot in front of the other, to get through this heart break. You must be a very special couple. It seems that God "deals the cards'" to those that have the ability to process, and accept them. There has to be a reason. All I can think of, is that your dear Josh had a special position for his brother to fill in Heaven. My prayers are with Ben. He now has two heros to live up to. Please know that your extended family is keeping you in our constant thoughts. Can't even imagine the trials of getting through each of these endless days. Be proud.

With the deepest regret, I have just learned of the death of Chief Petty Offiver Hardy. As a Vietnam Veteran and the State Chaplain of the Georgia Society, Sons Of The American Revolution, I speak for our President, Charlie A. Newcomer, III and the more than 1,400 SAR members around the State of Georgia in humbly expressing the condolences of a grateful Society. Wrapped in the integrity of service to our nation and the inestimable values of duty, honor and country, your American hero stood on a wall of freedom for us all. This precious life, lived and lost in love of America, epitomized every attribute of patriotism the Sons Of The American Revolution hold dear. And, as Americans, we could never repay the debt we owe ..!! Nor the debt we owe you… the family of one of America's best ...!!!

To the family of Nathan Hardy - I am so sorry for your loss but so thankful that you raised a son who was willing to lay down his life for his fellow man. He did what so many could not do. Parker will always know what an incredible dad he had and you should know that people all across America are praying for you and the strength to be strong as Nathan would want you do. I was so sorry to hear about Nate. I know his family has lost him in body, but, never in spirit. His memories live on in the hearts & minds of all who knew & loved him. Be comforted by knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Just close your eyes and you will feel his presence. May the Lord comfort each one of you in this sad time. His Heavenly life has just begun. May you feel him in your quiet moments and know he is at peace. God Bless You All!
