Hi, my name is Madison Vaughn. I am a senior of Winfield City High School and am writing this as a government assignment. I selected Sgt. Richard A. Vaughn because we both share the same last name. Here's a little bit about myself: I am 18 years old and I'm from Alabama. I can't personally say I know what it feels like to lose someone really close to you, but I am so thankful for those who fight for our country. Thank you for your sacrifice in defending our country. You, and everyone else who has sacrificed their lives fighting for our country will always be remembered. Thank you and God Bless. If you would like to respond email @[email protected]

I just read that Richard wore a KIA bracelet for Qixing Lee. I will thank him for that when I see him on the other side. My son Tristan Smith was killed with Qixing, Sean Novak, and Moises Jazmin.

I returned from my first tour in Iraq back in 2004. I was a promotable E-6 and was just appointed as the Platoon Sergeant of the Vipers. Ricky was the first new soldier to replace the many guys that were finally able to ETS after the stop loss. Ricky had intrigued me from the beginning. He had a fire that drove him that I assimilated to the same fire that drove me. I originally assigned him as my Tank driver. I learned quickly that a driver he was not ( he actually made the tank airborne several times, when it was not necessary) :). He was an exceptional soldier, always eager to assume resposibility. He was a fast learner, but more importantly he was a natural leader. In my absence. he executed all guidance to the "T". He was an absolute dream of a soldier. Leading one such as him was a once in a lifetime experience. He was like the fictitional character king midas, who turned everything he touched to gold. He was my right hand man and I loved him as my brother. I think the relationship we garnered is not easily understandable to most people. When things went sour with his first marriage I was the one he entrusted to help him through it. He was a lover and a fighter....... a damn good fighter. I don't dare say that because I trained him either. He just possessed that "spark" that is rarely seen in a person. We shared so many experiences that I cannot begin to explain on this post. I apologize to Ricky's family that I have taken so long to write. After all of the conversations that Ricky and I have shared I know that he shared a mutual unconditional love with his family (which is a very big family). I have written on this page many times. I was just never satisfied with the result. Today I will actually post this message. The reason is simple, I want his family to know from a former leader of Ricky, that their loved one is a hero, but he was already a hero before his untimely death. This whole thing just ruined me inside. I wish I could have stepped in front of the fatal bullet so that Ricky could carry on his life. I wanted him to be happy, because he deserved it. He is a hero not only by his extremely brave and decisive actions leading up to his death, but by his willingness to be there in the first place. He asked me just a few weeks before the fatal incident what I thought of him reenlisting. I told him that I would never judge any decision he made. I told him that he was a natural leader and he was going to be successful no matter what career path he chose. He told me that he knew that I had made the E8 promotion list and wanted our wives to meet and to pull him into the Company that I would eventually be First Sergeant of.
Ricky,
May God hold you as his right hand man, may your family shed no more tears, may your fellow soldiers be stronger, may vengence be righteous, may all of us always remember......
I wish it were me brother. Amy and I miss you something fierce. Our baby girl was born on the 9th of May, her name is Szahvyenna Vaughn Storm Carson. I will cherish, carry, and share our memories forever.

The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Richard, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Ricky,
It's hard for me to believe that you are really gone. I mean it seems just like yesterday we were partying it up and having a good time after we got back from our first deployment. You will be missed brother and you will not be forgotten. To Ricky's parents I know i never met you before but i do send my deepest condolences, I had the honor of serving in Iraq the first time with Ricky, he was a good friend of mine and he helped me out alot when I was going through rough times. He was and still is a good person. And to his lovely wife, I know we only got to meet and hang out a couple of times but I'm glad we did get to meet. I know how much you meant to Ricky and how happy you made him which was one of the best things that Soldier's like us need is someone we can rely on and trust and that you did so I thank you. You know if you ever need someone to talk to that I will listen and if you ever need anything DO NOT HESITATE to ask. Goodbye

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

to my nephew ,may you Rest in Peace:
Song For A Fallen Warrior
Into the land he has fallen
For what he believed
And stood for
But now stand no more
Into the land he fell
Where he once stood
And for What
He stood
His beliefs remain in our hearts
For it is now
That it stays
And lives
In ways
It is in his song
There is no border between us
And they are heard
His Earth is red
As is ours
And we hear him
Stretched into the sky
Not dead, just on the other side
The river has fish
The wind, air
He is inside of what is all around
And we know he is there
The Earth
Keeps speaking and singing
And we believe what she says
Is the truth
For it’s heard in our spirits
And she says it so clearly
That it can’t be misconstrued
For she’s spoken it into our hearts
And she’s sung it in our spirits
Like the warrior who went before
Who knew her voice before we knew our own
Laying in our cribs,
We heard her birds chirping,
Leaves rustling, winds blowing,
Rains soaking
Well before we heard our own words

Please accept our heartfelt condolences on the loss of Rickey. We feel your grief and pain. Our son, SPC Justin O'Donohoe, was killed in Afghanistan in May, 2006. His mother and I know full well that no words can ease the pain and all the good intentions and wishes don't make the grief more bearable. We hope that you, like us, can draw comfort in the knowledge that our sons were crusaders in a righteous cause and were doing exactly what they wanted to be doing with their lives when the time came for them to be called away from us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in this most difficult of times.
"And they who for their country die
Shall fill an honored grave,
For glory lights the soldier's tomb,
And beauty weeps the Brave."

Ricky, you will be terribly missed by all. I thank you for serving this great country. Those who have fought for freedom have a different taste of freedom than those who have not. You my friend have paid the ultimate price for all our freedoms. We ALL will be in great debt and graditude for your service and time here as a good human being. Thank you my fellow war brother.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!
I would also like to tell you about a website, http://groups.msn.com/SSPSoldierPor
traits/homepage,
where some wonderful people will make wood portraits of your fallen Hero for free for the immediate family. I became aware of this site when I wanted to do something special for Le Ron’s mother.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I was blessed to watch Ricky grow up from a teenager into a great young man. I believe God has a special place for those like Ricky who gave their all for what they believed in like he did.
