Hey brother, I'm sitting here thinking about you. It's been 3 years now. Hurts just like it was yesterday. I started getting upset because today, of all days, the government is stopping pay for soldiers until they straighten crap out. Then I think about you and how much better you were than any of them. And me. You wouldn't complain about anything. You always held your head high. I miss you man. I miss you coming to my office and chilling for a few hours. I miss going on patrols with you, joking in the gym. Thanks brother for being and giving your best, for leading from the front and being the example. I know you are with God and without worries.

Time has gone by so fast. It will be 3-years since we lost Jeffery on 4/8/08. Time is now telling us a mistake was not made. He is not coming home. I want to hear the sound of his voice. I want to see that cowboy hat pulled low over his eyes as he sits back to watch everything that's going on, which he started. I want to hear Lisa, Jeffery and David laugh like they use to. I want their pain to go away.

Jeffery was a friend of my oldest daughter. When she spoke of Jeff she always smiled. I was in Walmart one day and he was home on leave and was standing behind me in line and I turned around and he caught my eye and said, "HOWDY MA'AM"...I don't know if he knew I was April's mom or not but his smile was very kind. He had this little look of mischievous about him. Jeff, you are missed by so many....

Until then... just know I will be thinking of you, trust me when I say, your memory will stand the test of time.

It was an honor to have been the Lead Ride Captain for the Patriot Guard Riders at SSgt. Jeffery Hartley's services. I was an even bigger honor to just be at the services for such a hero. From what I have learned from his family, friends and brothers in arms, Jeffery was a soldier's soldier. Having served five tours of duty and awarded two Bronze Stars he was and always will be a American Hero. My thanks to Sgt Hill for the outstanding job he did and still does as the family's CAO. The support shown by the Waller and Hempstead communities was amazing. Mr. Hartley, if I may ever be of service just ask.

Love Lives On

Those we love remain with us
for love itself lives on,
and cherished memories never fade
because a loved one's gone.
Those we love can never be
more than a thought apart,
far as long as there is memory,
they'll live on in the heart.

I just listened to "Cowboys Like Us" and damn near started crying. I want the Hartley family to know that we all miss Jeff very much. The impact he had on the soldiers he served with is immeasurable. We all loved him and respected him. It's been over two years and my heart still breaks when I think of him. I know he is in heaven and safe and happy, however, the world was deprived of a great man. This world would be such a better place if there were more Jeff Hartley's out there.

Not that I don't think about Sgt Hartley all the time, but a couple of days ago I realised I was thinking more and more about him. My husband was deployed with him during his final days, and although I only met him once, he was all I ever really heard about. I can't believe its been a year. I can't believe I have to trust this unit to redeploy without him. He was their backbone. We'll never forget you. Tonight your brothers went out together to share a Hartley Special. It was probably one of the first nights since they've been back that they really bonded. Please watch over them during the next deployment and protect them. You'll never be forgotten.

To the family of a Great Soldier
I am truly sorry for your loss. He will never be forgotten.
I had the privilege of serving with him during OIF III. He spent a good amount of time in my aid station and always knew how to lift everyone's spirits with his humor and smile. He was truly a professional always making sure the mission and his fellow Soldiers were taken care of. The Army has certainly lost one of its best warriors.

I will never forget the way I felt when the bikers were bringing this soldier home to Hempstead, bringing hundreds of motorcycles carrying American flags in front of my home. Sgt Shaun Tousha, which was a close personal friend of many years, was brought home the day before. I couldn't hold my grief in any longer. I got down on my knees in my front yard watching and praying my thanks to these soldiers. While I didn't personally know this soldier... he made a huge impact on our small community. Not only Hempstead came out to show their respect for this man, but the neighboring towns also did. He won't be forgoten. I can say that I will remember the day that he touched my life until the day I leave this earth. Rest in peace Staff Sgt. Jeffery L. Hartly, Your work on earth is done and we thank you.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Jeffery, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Jeff,
The world threw many things our way, and over the years we overcame. Sometimes we were together and sometimes we went alone. Either way we have each individually had to answer the call to fight the good fight. You did so with honor and integrity. You ended up giving the ultimate sacrifice in laying down your own life so that others don't have to. May we all remember and give the respect that such a great sacrifice not only deserves, but demands. You are with your brother now... we will see you both soon. Until then, we will stay here to keep up the fight and finish the tasks still needing to be done. Your work is done... rest and wait for us to come see you. I'll remember you every time I put on my badge. You are a true friend Jeff, I will always love you like a brother.

To the Family and Friends of this Soldier:
I will stand in grief with this soldier's family to honor him. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life, but I promised Brent that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.
We lost our son SFC Brent A. Adams on 12/1/05 and it seems like yesterday. I wish so badly there were things I could say to you right now to make the pain you are feeling go away, but I know first hand there simply are no words that will bring you the comfort and peace your heart aches for. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you go through this tragedy moment by moment and as you mourn this loss.
We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with as our hearts both burst with pride and pain together.
I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally. While they can never be replaced, neither will they ever be forgotten. You must trust that sometime, someday the loving memories you have will help to sustain you and help you go on. This courageous soldier will forever be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well.
To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort: When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. The one thing that cannot be taken from you is your wonderful memories that now will mean more than ever.
If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero.
God Bless this soldier and family who gave all and God Bless legacy.com for setting up this site where families can so quickly share their condolences and prayers with others like themselves.

April 18, 2008

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am very sorry for your loss. I had the great privilege of serving with Jeffery in 1-10 FA at Fort Benning and for a year in Iraq in 2005-2006. He was a wonderful Soldier and a great leader. He always took care of his men and we could always count him to accomplish his mission in the most professional way. We are all very proud of him and will miss him dearly. God bless you.

Jeff was such an amazing friend and always put others first. I am seeing he did the same in the army, and to everyone that stood by Jeff in the field may you return home safe to your loved ones and remember that Jeff is watching and helping you through the hard times from above. I hope that when anyone thinks of Jeff that they will remember his smile it was worth a million! He always had it with him. Jeff will be missed by many! We are so lucky to have known such a GREAT man and a HERO!

To S.Sgt. J L Hartley family & friends,
I did not know Jeffery, and I have been cheated by not knowing him and the others like him. I do know the type of young man that he was and I would be proud to be able to be associated with him and his kind. My prayers go to the family and friends of Jeffery. It is a time to remember all the good things that he did while he was with us and to always remember that he gave his all so that we may continue to be able to give but what we can to God and Country. Thank you Jeffery is not enough. Please know that he ,and you ,always will have a place in my heart and prayers each day that I remain. May our Lord be near you at this time of sorrow, may He make His face shine down on you, and may He grant you peace, this day and for ever more.

I have been reading all these wonderful things that fellow soldiers, friends, and family members have all had to say about SSG Hartley. I see that he was a great example for many people in the world today, Thank you for your service, you will be missed by many. You are in a better place now. It is a shame that you had to leave so soon in the manner that you did.

Being a soldier myself, you always know there is a chance that this could happen to someone you know. But with Jeffery being from my home town and me knowing his father David so well this really hit close to home. David, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Call me if you need anything.

To SSG Jeffery Hartley,
Stand down soldier, mission complete, job well done. In the eyes of your family, friends, and country you are a patriot, warrior, and a HERO. Thank you for your service and our freedom.
