As always you are in my heart and thoughts. I had yet another trip to the hospital with more pain so bad I wanted to die. Not that that would be so bad, since I'd be with you and all the others I've loved and lost. But yet again cousin you pulled me through. You give me strength to carry on. One of my nurses asked me who the Phil was that I kept asking for strength in the depth of my suffering? So I told her about you. She said you were my guardian angel...and I just burst out laughing. Guardian "Angel"? I just chuckled again and told her, she had to know you to understand. :) Miss you. Love you. John

Ginger and Family,
My original post doesn't seem to appear in the guest book any more. John and I were heart broken to learn of the passing of Phil. He called me from Afghanistan to personally tell me. We both wish we could have attended Phil's funeral, but we were with you in spirit.
Phil was an awesome Marine, and a great friend. I remember stopping by SOI one day to get some paperwork when John was deployed and I bumped into Phil in the parking lot. He started with "How's the old man doing?" Then in the next breath, "To heck with him, how are you and the kids doing?" I mentioned a leak we had in the roof and his first question was "Do I need to get a working party together and come roof your house?" I was truly touched that he would offer to do that. But, that's just the kind of man he was, always willing and ready to help anyone in need.
We are both so very sorry for your loss. Phil will be missed by many people, but he will never ever be forgotten.
We are here for you and your family if you ever need a thing.

Mrs. Dykeman, I don't know you but I did know Dykeman. Ths is my second entry into your book because I feel so hurt because of this. I know that Capt. Dykeman was a leader of Marines and I am impressed with the fact that he went back to school and became a commissioned officer. Back in 1993-1996 Cpl. Dykeman was one of my Marines that worked for me and with me. We had a lot of good times as we deployed and trained in different situations. I know that I can't feel your pain as a family but I feel pain because what he meant to me as a Marine and as a person. Once he rode home with me to SC and I then let him take my car to FL and he picked me up on the way back to Camp Lejune. He was a kind giving person. Even though I have been off active duty for 12 years, it still feels like yesterday that I met your husband. My name is Timmie Brown and I was at one point Dykeman's Platoon Guide, then Platoon Sergeant. I only ask that you contact me so that I can atleast say hello.

We just found out about the loss of Phil. Sorry we lost touch and its taken this for us to find each other again. Jeannie has come back to live with us and she told us of the shocking news. Phil was a great friend I could always count on him for help with anything, (that I knew Tom couldn't fix) which was pretty much everything! Ginger we were great friends and I'm sorry that I've lost touch with you and the kids. Logan still has great memories of playing with Austin. He remembers how they ran around the backyard. And talks about him as being his first friend. We miss you and hope to hear from you!!!! Melanie, Tom, Logan, Lauren, Lucy and Lia Underwood

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

The first word that comes to mind when I think about Phil and The Dykeman Family is "giving". Phil and Ginger were the first people we met when we moved to Jacksonville, NC. We were new to the area and my husband was getting ready to deploy only a few weeks after our move there. Our daughter was only 11 months old at the time. I remember several conversations that were held by our back picket fence and the numerous neighborhood gatherings held at their home. Phil always went out of his way to play with Cadence like she was one of theirs.

While my husband was gone Phil graciously took care of our large yard, his yard and our elderly neighbors yard. He never asked for anything in return even on those very hot and humid summer days when he was out until dark trying to take care of everyone. Ginger was the one person that I could call for anything. She was the one that sat in an E.R. waiting room with me until the early hours of the morning when my young daughter had an infection. I will never forget those moments. Neither one of them ever hesitated for a moment when someone would ask for help.

The loss of Phil is a tragic one, but I hope that Ginger and the kids can find comfort in knowing that Phil will always be remembered in our hearts. He was an amazing husband and Dad along with being a true friend and an honorable Marine. Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

We were deeply saddened upon hearing of Phil's tragic passing and wish to extend our heartfelt prayers and sympathies to his family.

We first came to know Phil as a skinny junior high schooler with a shy personality, accompanied by a capricious smile that made it appear he knew something the rest of us did not. In addition to loving to swim and bike, he was intent upon playing the best soccer possible. What he lacked in size, he more than made up for with heart, soul and dedication.

It isn't the least surprising that he was admired for being a wonderful husband, father, brother, friend, fellow officer, commanding officer - committed to doing the right thing.

Thank you, Phillip, for your service and your sacrifice. May you be at peace and know you will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate to have known you.

July 10, 2008

The first time I met Phil was at the twins' fifth birthday party in Quantico. Ginger had put him on "sand-art" duty out in the garage. He was to help the kids peel off the different layers of the picture and then aid them in placing different colored sand over the correct, pre-glued spot. The sand was in little pixie-stick type tubes. Anyway, it was a mess. But Phil was taking his task very seriously, as were the other adults who came and went from the garage as Phil stayed. Then I shared how funny I thought the whole situation was, and Phil shared the same sentiment, and we joked about how it must have been his "great idea" to do sand art with 5 year olds.

This is just an example of the little things Phil was always doing to please the kids and Ginger; there was no task too big or small, and there was always a way. I didn't know him on the professional level, but I imagine the same demeanor and the same values held true in that area of his world as well.

I keep thinking of the (domesticated) bird that landed on his finger while he was doing yardwork one day, and instead of shooing it away he built a giant cage for it. And I keep thinking of him holding my new baby boy during one of the many Wednesdays that I was at the Dykeman's for dinner...he was one of the first men that held David, as my husband was in Iraq when David was born. So many memories rush through one's mind during times like this...when this stops being so surreal I'm really going to miss you Phil.

I served with Phil back in 1995 when he was a CPL with 3/2 and I was a platoon Corpsman. He was a good NCO that cared about his Marines and took care of his Doc. I have found memories of drinking beers with him out in Jacksonville and laughing at him when he played his favorite blondie song. God Bless Phil and his family. Thank You for teaching me on what it meant to be a leader. Semper Fi Brother, I will miss you!!
