Salute Sgt. Michael H. Ferschke, an American hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us that enjoy the freedoms that we have in America. Fighting the war on terrorist that want to deprive us of those freedoms cost this family dearest. This Memorial Day 2010 his memory is alive in the hearts of all patriots. We honor him today and everyday and keep his family in our prayers.

I was Michael's recruiter when he entered the Marine Corps in Maryville in 2003. I was impressed with him early on in his time in the Delayed Entry Program. I leaned on him to inspire the other members of the program and he did just that. He was leader, even then, and I know he was an incredible NCO. I admired him for his tenacity and dedication. He would never accept being second in anything and pushed himself to be the best. As recruiters of future Marines, we often grow attached to the courageous men and women who seek to join our ranks. They become like little brothers and sisters to us. But Mike was someone special. I will never forget him or his sacrifice.
Mike, I know you're up there looking down on us. I want you to know that I am a better person for having known you and the Corps is a better organization for having had you in its ranks.

My condolences to the parents, wife and child of Sgt. Michael H. Ferschke. I read his story online and was very saddened that he never had the chance to meet his infant son. I lost two co-workers in Iraq (they were Army Reservists)in 2008 and earlier this year. I also presently have a 19 yr-old nephew in Afghanistan. This tragedy could happen to anyone...and millions of Americans feel your pain. Your son died a hero. This country would be nothing without the sacrifice of men like him. God bless you and your family. May your grandson (Michael's baby) bring you great joy and constant living reminders of your precious son.

Michael, soon it will be a year that you will have left God's earth for higher ground. The death of a child is something you never get over so please let your parents know that you are now ok. God has a way of giving us signs when we're still and I pray that God has allowed those signs to come to your parents and family. As a Gold Star Mother I know the pain of the death of a child. I also know that it's not the death we remember but the life you lived and loved. May that life be celebrated and remembered forever.

Your parents aren't alone and there are many who are there for them. If they ever want to talk to others who have gone through the death of a child or loved one in active duty please do contact me.

May God continue to provide His love and comfort to your family and friends.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Ferschke Family,

I had the distinct honor of training your son before he deployed to Iraq. I know him well, and the men that were in his most recent platoon. He is my brother. I want you to know that the training he received is very difficult to master, but Michael was a natural. Not only did he excel, but he helped others to grasp the skills and knowledge as well. I would also like to convey how proud I am of your son. He did everything right. Know that his sacrifice saved others lives, it impacted and furthered our mission in Iraq, and his actions are an example for other Marines who will follow him. I am sure by now that you have read the Reconnaissance Creed. Michael lived that creed. He never allowed any challenge to deter him, he looked after his men, and he didn't hesitate. He had a very positive influence on those around him, and always brought a smile to everyone’s face, even in very tense situations. It pained me deeply when I heard he fell, but when I heard how it happened I was very proud. God bless and give his wife and child peace. He loved them dearly and was very excited about his wife’s pregnancy. Please let her know that now and forever you all and she are a part of our family; may you never need for anything. My wife too is Okinawan and I understand how difficult this has been for your family. My wife and I would be pleased to help in any way we can, and we extend an invitation to all of you in any time of need.
Lord, bless the Ferschke family. Let your peace fill them; let them know that Michael’s sacrifice was necessary, that their sacrifice was necessary, and that Michael is with you now. Bless his mother. Mother’s have the hardest job of all – releasing their children into your capable hands. Help her to understand your plans and the impact Michael had on others lives. Help Michael’s father to be a pillar of support for the rest of the family as they deal with their loss. Bless and protect Michael’s wife as she adjusts to life in the United States, and thank you for Michael’s wonderful family who have reached out to support her. Bless Michael’s child. Michael is a great father and a great example. Let his child know what he stood for. Let your peace reign Lord; in Jesus name, Amen.
Have peace and joy in the Lord ,

To the Ferschke Family. I served with Mike Ferschke with Bravo Co 3rd Plt in 2006. I would like the opportunity to share a few stories about Mike while at 3rd. I remember going out in Nago on a sunday night singing karaoke til early in the morning, his expertise as a radio operator, how during the shooting package he was such a natural shot and decisive in the house, good times in Guam at TGIF and the Hardrock talking to Japanese tourists, on the essex talking and watching football with one of the few patriots fans in the platoon, and countless other memories. One memory that stands out to me about Michael that will always stick was during my last night in Oki (Jan 07) at my paddle party there was maybe close to a hundred people in attendance some of whom I had known for years and went to war with. After it was all said and done only 2 went out with me that night for my last in Okinawa and made sure I made it to the airport in the morning, that was Michael and Levi. My last memory of him and of Okinawa was a firm handshake and a hug as brothers do. My memories of Michael are not unique. There are hundreds of people at 3rd Recon alone that he touched in similar ways. He fought for his brothers and his calling. When I speak or think of Ferschke it is not with sorrow but with a bittersweet smile and fond memories that life is too short for us all. His life was one of purpose and substance unlike many who live to be very old. Ferschke will live forever in my memories as he will with many others. Thank you and god bless.

To the family of Sgt Michael Ferschke;
I would like to send my deepset condolences in the loss of your son. I had the privilege of being one of then Cpl Ferschkes Close Quarters Battle and Breachers Course instructors while he part of the MEU in Okinawa. 2 of his friends; David Day and Jeff Boyer were a part of his platoon we trained during that time as well.
I can remember constantly "ribbing" him and Day on a daily basis.., calling Michael - Day Jr. and then calling David - Ferschke Jr...because there was a resemblance between the 2 when they were both in combat gear.
I can tell you that every challenge we threw at Michael and the rest of his platoon, they answered and passed with flying colors. He was an impressive young man, and even though i was the resident "angry instructor", he always managed to make me lose my bearing and laugh out loud at some point every day. He impressed us all so much and took everything in so well, that we requested him as an assistant instructor a few courses later to help us train some of his fellow RECON Marines.
Words cannot express how proud i am of your son. My heart is very heavy right now, but i am so proud of young Sgt Fersheke. I have visited this site no less than a dozen times over the last week..each time, wanting to write, but never being able to come up with the right words.
I dont know if the words i have written are the "right words"; all i know i am a better man and Marine for having a chance to know and train Mike. Mike will always be with us all. God Bless you Mr and Mrs Ferschke.

I first met Mike in July of '07, though I only knew him for a short time, I will remember him for the rest of my life. I can say with 100% conviction that what your son did was the first 100% completly selfless act that I have ever witnessed.

Your son is the reason that our country is so great. Greatness is not garaunteed, it is earned with sweat and blood. Never let anyone tell you that what we fight for is greed, hegemony or oil. They will never understand why we fight and sacrifice so much for someone else. They are the people that lay content at night in the soft blanket of security that men like your son provide. Like children who know nothing of the value of money, they will never know the sacrifice and pain that ensures their freedoms and their pursuit of happiness. Believe me when I say that those people have not the courage or the moral fortitude to stand by men like your son. Men like your son are the greatest asset that this country has and it has been an honor to know him.

August 20, 2008

I cannot claim the distinction of having served in the Marine Corps or other branch of the U.S. military. I am a retired Federal law enforcement agent with 24 years’ service, initially with the U.S. Border Patrol and subsequently in the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). My decision to embark on a law enforcement career is attributable to the positive influence of a now-retired Nashville, Tennessee, police officer who was also a Marine Vietnam veteran.

My career was enhanced and enriched by the many Marines alongside whom I had the honor of serving. Among them was fellow DEA Special Agent Major Eugene McCarthy, USMCR, who was killed on 02 February, 1991 in Operation Desert Storm. U.S. Army Corporal Lance Fielder, the only son of my Marine Corps/Nashville Police Department mentor, was also killed in Desert Storm on 27 February.

As a consequence of this background, I support the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (MCLEF). This charitable group provides scholarships to the children of Marines and Federal law enforcement agents who die in the line of duty. I have made a donation to the MCLEF in memory of Sgt Ferschke.

Since my retirement, I have maintained contact with many of my former Marine co-workers, and have also made the acquaintance of several other Marines, among them members of the 1st and 2nd Marine Recon Battalions. All of today’s Warriors, and most especially the Marines, are truly members of a Latter Day Greatest Generation. I grieve when I learn of the loss of any and all who have courageously and nobly volunteered to stand between the monsters and the weak.

Sgt Ferschke now rests in the arms of a just and righteous Creator. May his family, friends and brother Marines find solace and healing there as well. May that same Creator strengthen, watch over and protect all those who still remain in harm’s way.

Respectfully and gratefully,

Joseph B. “Sonny” Long

To the family of Sgt Ferschke,

It's hard to know what to say at a time like this. I know from my own experience when we lost our son, Cpl Patrick Nixon, USMC, that the words were not as important as the actions of those who took time to show their support and gratitude for the sacrifice that your son and you, his family, have made.
Your son made a decision at some time to be a part of the best orginzation in the world. To test himself and to grow. He did just that.
He is the best of the best and the world is a better place for men like him.
My heart goes out to you at this time of grief. But I know that your son has joined a band of brothers that are still manning the walls for us.

May God Bless you and ease your pain with wonderful memories.

Words cannot express what one Marine feels for another. There are no differences of age, time, rank, or battlefield. We stand and we serve. Some of us fall. Marines remember. May God's richest blessings be your's Michael, and your family's. See you on duty in God's country. Semper Fidelis.

Throughout our history, God has blessed this country with young men like your son who are willing to put themselves in harm's way to protect our nation. In your time of grief, please know this country grieves with you, but is also incredibly proud to have counted him among our own.

Michael's Family,
The loss of a child is something that I would never wish on my worst enemy. My heart aches for your loss and I sincerely hope that you can someday find peace in your hearts. My husband is the father of one of Michael's team and a veteran Marine as well. Like his dad, his son's name is Tim Cunningham. I have not heard from Tim and my husband is unavailable until Friday. At this point, I know that I can speak for both of us in saying that we are grateful for Michael's brave leadership, guidance and protection that he so honorably provided to our Tim and the rest of his team. We are so proud of him and his service to our country.
On Veteran's Day of 2005 I wrote a poem for my husband and Tim. I would like to share it with you in hopes that it may give you some comfort and would like to now dedicate it to Michael as well.

CHANGE

Making a decision to change paths
Embracing change in life
Knowing the opportunities that strife can bring
A very, very courageous thing

A good soldier respects and advocates life
Life for knowledge
Life for honor
Ultimately changing the path of the world

Witnessing enlightenment is the path to valor
Changing attitudes in this life we call human
Racing from the pallor of death
Prayerfully not to the death
That is all too common

A human life is a precious thing
Giving life to humans
Is the gift a soldier brings

A chance to change the world
Is the opportunity of a soldier
A very, very courageous thing

With deepest empathy and condolences to Michael's family and friends,

Brenda Jordan

Michael is a true American hero! It is an honor for Maryville that Michael called Maryville home. We are so proud of him and you, his family. God Bless all of you today and all the days ahead. What a wonderful blessing that he will live on in his son or daughter, and he will live on in all of your memories of such a special young man.

To the family and parents of Michael I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you

Love to a Fallen family,
I am so sorry to hear about another fallen Hero! I know there are no words that I can say to ease your pain! The loss of a child, husband or brother at such a young age is something that is the most difficult thing to bare! I wish there were something I could say that would ease your pain! We can only pray that one day we will be together again. I was told that if you stretch a piece of string a mile long and line that string with beads, the beads would resemble eternity. Life here on earth is equal to “only one bead”. We have only a short time here compared to the time we will spend in eternity with our loved ones. The only thing I can say is let faith keep you grounded in your life and hold on to your loved ones! This will help you through! It is what helps me get through my days. My son, Anthony entered into the Heavens to be with our Lord in 2007. We can never understand the reasons why our loved ones would ever be taken from us. I pray that one day our pain will ease!
God Bless Your Family!

As a Vietnam Veteran Marine I feel your pain and loss of yet another Marine. As you well know Marines are not recruited, they are born. Your Marine will be remembered by all the present and future Marines just as Ira Hayes and Chesty Puller are. To the family of Sgt Ferschke,
I am so truly sorry for your loss. I, too, lost my soldier Aug 22, 2007 when I was 8 1/2 months pregnant with our first son. I know the pain you're feeling, and you're asking "why." I still to this day ask why, but I've come to learn that you can't ask questions. You must believe in the Lord and know that he wanted your soldier; just as he wanted mine. I will be praying for you whole family, along with your son's child who will make his/her way into the world soon. It'll be hard, but knowing that you have that piece of your son left, is absolutely amazing. I know that my son will always remember what a hero his daddy is and how he died. Please don't hesitate to email me if you'd like to talk. I've been in your shoes, and I will pray for you. Hopefully someday you'll be able to look back and your soldier will bring a smile to your face, rather than tears to your eyes. God Bless

To the Ferschke Family, My deepest sympathy for the sacrifice of your son while serving his country. My son, Chris Bova, was with "Ferschke" during the fire-fight. You brave son was leading his team by example. He was the first to enter the building. Chris expressed a great loss of a close friend and brother that day. Driven by patriotism, our sons enlisted in time of war. They excelled as soldiers being Marines. They excelled as Marines being in ReCon. I know your pride is equaled by your sorrow. I hope that in time, you will begin to celebrate his life and the time you shared with him. I will hold Michael in my heart, just as Chris does. I pray for your comfort in this time of grief. God bless Sgt Michael H Ferschke. "always beside you", Semper Fi

My thoughts and prayers are with you today and all the days to come. My daughter left us suddenly to be with our Lord so I have walked in your steps before. Someone gave me the "Footprints In The Sand" poem when she passed and I can only say that He will carry you and is right now.

Your son is truly a hero, he is a Marine. My son is also a Marine(Recon - just returned from second tour) and this hits home to all of us who send our children, spouses and brothers and sisters off. God Bless them all because if it were not for the men and women of our great militarys we would not have the freedoms we so enjoy and take for granted.

God Bless you and your family and God Bless Sgt Michael H. Ferschke, Jr.

I met Michael when he first moved to Maryville from R.I. when we were in the 4th grade. We started playing football together and became fast friends. All through school Michael was a good friend to me and everyone that knew him. Right after graduation night, he, Randy, Trevor, and I all met up on last time. I regret losing touch with him the last few years and will always miss him. The lesson being don't lose touch with those who were once close to you because you may not get to say goodbye. You're a hero to all of us Mike, and we will all miss you.
