Paul Conlon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 23, 2008.
MASHPEE — Pfc. Paul Edward Conlon Jr., 21, of Mashpee, was killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 15, 2008, when a roadside bomb blew up the vehicle on which he served as a gunner. He was the son of Maria (Baron) Conlon of Somerville and John M. Borges of Taunton.

Paul was born and raised on Cape Cod, and graduated from Mashpee High School, Class of 2005. Following high school, he joined the Army and was deployed to Afghanistan shortly after graduating from boot camp on Feb. 1, 2008. During combat in Afghanistan, he was wounded but continued to fight, saving the lives of many soldiers. He later refused surgery to stay with his unit. His military awards included two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star of Valor.

He was an incredibly talented person who excelled in art, music, writing, and poetry. Franklin Pierce College offered him a scholarship based on his writing ability, but he turned it down to serve his country. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, Cape Cod Composite Squadron.

Besides his Mom and Dad, he is survived by his brother, Daniel Conlon Mahoney of Hyannis; grandmother, Luzia "Lucy" Baron of Mashpee; great-grandmother, Maria "Avo" Darosa of Somerville; great-aunt, Maria "Titi" Darosa of Somerville; uncles, John J. Baron II and his wife, Erika, of Mashpee, and William H. Baron III of Sandwich; aunts, Laura Lee Baron of California and Victoria A. Baron of Sandwich; cousins, Danielle M. Auld of Somerville, Douglas Baron, John Baron III, Mathew Baron, and Conor Baron, all of Mashpee; Band of Brothers of 1-506, Task Force Red Currahee in Afghanistan; namesake, Paul E. Conlon Sr. of Cape Cod; and many more relatives.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 25, in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 74 Algonquin Ave. at Route 151, Mashpee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Christ the King Church, Mashpee Commons, followed by burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pfc. Conlon's memory can be made to 1LT Donald Carwile Children's Memorial Education Scholarship Fund for his children, c/o First National Bank, PO Box 847, Oxford, MS 38655. To the Conlon family, Conlon was a awesome friend and I enjoyed getting to know him during basic training, he bunked right beside me. During basic, him and another guy filled my sleeping bag with shaving creme and I got so mad at him. Although we liked to prank each other, he was a all around good person and he will truly be missed and never be forgotten. I also remember the day that you guys sent him snickers when he was in basic also and he got in trouble. The whole time he was doing push-ups he had a smile on his face. He truly had a awesome spirit. I remember him well and I feel so bad that I was not able to tell him goodbye. lol I remember his handwriting was so small you needed a magnifying glass to read it, but it was still very good handwriting Godbless you guys. he will be missed.

Paul,
I miss you so dearly. There is never a day, hardly a moment, that goes by that you are not in my thoughts. The love that I have for you still grows stronger everyday. The respect that I have for you will never be surpassed by another. I wish there was a way that I could say these words to you. I know that you are safe now, in the eternal resting place, but for my selfish ways, I wish you were here. I want for one last time to laugh with you; to have not a care in the world; to know that everything is going to be alright; to know that the world is our playground; mostly , one last time to laugh with you. I have not lost sight of these things, I have just lost the drive to feel them. With time, my mind eases. With time, my heart weighs. With time, I grow. With time, you are no less missed.
I love you Peej.

Paul, it's been exactly one year without you and I think about you every minute of every day. You we're not only one of my best friends in the entire world, but your smile and ridiculous sense of humor could always brighten any day. I still wear the belt you got me during my junior year for my birthday. Backwards, obviously. And every time I listen to Saves The Day, it makes me smile and think of all the times we had down by the pond in my neighborhood, just sitting. Writing. Laughing. I love you with all my heart, and I will never stop missing you, buddy!

Paul, soon it will be a year that you will have left God's earth for higher ground. The death of a child is something you never get over so please let your parents know that you are now ok. God has a way of giving us signs when we're still and I pray that God has allowed those signs to come to your parents and family. As a Gold Star Mother I know the pain of the death of a child. I also know that it's not the death we remember but the life you lived and loved. May that life be celebrated and remembered forever.

Your parents aren't alone and there are many who are there for them. If they ever want to talk to others who have gone through the death of a child or loved one in active duty please do contact me.

May God continue to provide His love and comfort to your family and friends.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Paul, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Paul, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Paul and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Conlon family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Paul and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Mrs. Conlon,
Your son was by far the best person I have ever met in my life. It didn't matter what kind of day we had a work...how bad it was...he always managed to make everyone laugh. Always kept high spirits. I can remember when we were in Basic he never complained about anything and always had a smile. He is a hero to all and will never be forgotten.

I have started this note many times but unsure of the right words. My name is Misty Morningstar. My brother is 1st Lt. Donald Carwile; he was killed along with Paul. I didn't know Paul but I can tell you that my brother loved him. He loved every one of the soldiers that he served with. The first and last thing he had on his mind was his troops. He even talked about them to me on the phone and in his emails. Please let me tell you that my brother died that day with true HERO and me and my family thank you for your sacrifice as well.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor

America has lost a true hero.I knew from the day I met him, Paul danced to the beat of a different dummer. It did not surprise me that he pushed aside his own wounds to help his comrades. He worked for me at the Somerville Stop & Shop and showed those same traits with the associates he worked with. May you rest in peace young hero. My deepest sympathies to Paul's family, but know that Paul always wanted to serve his country and make a difference. Paul, you made the ultimate sacrfice to keep us free..God Bless You

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pfc. Paul Conlon our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Paul. And to Paul it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Paul, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Paul’s family and loved ones.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived
okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here
is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you
every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up
and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were
gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for
me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's
chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life
on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not
be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But
one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a
time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will
give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day
was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the
way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick
him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in
your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember
you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am very sorry for Your loss and our Nation's loss. Your family member is unknown to me personally but I am saddened by his death and grateful for his sacrifice to secure our freedom and advance the values that Americans hold so dear.

To the Conlon family: Thank you for giving Paul the values and beliefs that made him want to join the military. Without people like Paul who put themselves in harm's way for the safety and freedom of all of us, this Country would not survive. I can't imagine your pain, but I grieve with you. Thank you.

I don't know you, but just wanted to say thank you. There really are no words that are sufficient to express my gratitude and there definitely aren't words that can take away your pain. May God bless Paul and his family and friends.

While reading the obituaries this morning, I began to read Paul's notice. Even though I have never met him, I have tears in my eyes as I write this to you knowing that he gave his life for this country and for all of us. You should be very proud of him for his heroism. It is because of men and women like Paul that we are able to have our freedom. There are no words of gratitude that I can say that could possibly ease your pain. I'm a grateful American just wanting to let you know how sorry I am for your loss. May God comfort you.
