Joseph i miss you so much. I think about you all the time. I still have all our emails. It still hurts to read your last message. Everything about you was amazing. You had a gift. Every day here at Project Challenge one of the cadets asks about Joseph. I tell them about the day he visited here prior to deplyment and how he answered questions for hours in the heat without complaining and was so proud of himself. He is a hero to us here at Challenge.

Joe, god bless you soldier and thank you for your service to a grateful nation, forever we will mourn you and those fallen service members both before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was KIA in Iraq while on a routine patrol. My promise to him was that I would never forget him but also those fallen before and after him. When I made that promise to him the day we laid him to his final resting place I did not realize how often I would need to make entries on Legacy and it just breaks my heart knowing that so many other families have and will continue to feel the pain that our family has endured. To the Gonzales family please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another we will never forget Joseph!

I can't even find the words...I lost my 19 year old son--5 Sept 2007, Balad, Iraq. My son was also stationed at Ft Hood and we are also from Arizona (Phoenix). I am absolutely devastated and I know that you are too...but find comfort in the fact that we will see our loved ones, our heroes again. Do I wish that I could trade places with my son? ABSOLUTELY not. He is in the arms of our Lord--"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pvt. Joseph Gonzales our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joseph. And to Joseph it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Joseph, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure.
