Jason Karella Obituary
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home, 11621 Old Seward Highway. After the service, a celebration of Jason's life will be from 2-6 p.m. at the VFW Post 9981, 9191 Old Seward Highway.
Born Oct. 25, 1987, in Fairbanks, Jason moved to Anchorage in 1998.
He attended Bartlett High School and graduated through the Alaska Military Youth Academy Challenge Program. Jason enjoyed playing hockey in his youth, as well as snowboarding and snowmachining throughout Alaska. An avid outdoorsman, Jason loved camping, hunting and fishing. When he was 16, Jason made the decision to join the Marines, completing boot camp at MCRD in San Diego, and was stationed at Twentynine Palms in California.
Jason completed a tour in Iraq in 2007. He was due to come home from Afghanistan in November 2008 and was waiting for the paperwork to be completed for his promotion to sergeant.
Jason is survived by his mother, Anne-Marie Kitchens and step-father, Bill Anklewich; father, Kevin Karella and step-mother, Dawn-Marie; brothers, Josh and Jesse Karella; grandparents, Bob and Barbara Kitchens, and Rosemary Karella; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests donations be sent to charities supporting our troops and disabled veterans. Please make donations to the following charities: The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund at www.fallenherosfund.org or Marines Helping Marines at www.marineshelpingmarines.org.

We were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Jason. I can still remember that cute little face as he was trying to convince me to let him stay up past his bedtime. I have to admit, he always got his way. Jason was such an amazing little boy, and I regret that I never had the opportunity to thank him for defending Our Country. My husband served in the U.S Air Force for over ten years and we understand the sacrifice. I've taught my son that not all super heroes wear capes, some wear combat boots. Jason, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other sailors and soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As was remarked at Jason's memorial in Fairbanks yesterday: Only two entities have ever offered to die for YOU: Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom. Lets make a decision to today to honor both of those sacrifices. Loosing a loved one is unimaginable and the worst thing a parent can ever experience. My two year old daughter was killed in an accidental handgun accident and died in my arms not to long ago. I know to well what it is like to loose a child. Don't waste your time, as I have, asking God why this has happened to your son. The answer that He will give you is, "know matter what answer I tell you, it will never be good enough." When all of our short lives have ended and we have all taken our last breath, then and only then will we all get all the answers that we are looking for. In the meantime, enjoy the wonderful memories of your son and try not to focus on the bad. The pain of loosing a child diminishes over time, trust me it does. It never goes away and will be never be something that you "get over." But always remember the great sacrifice that your son has made. I wish you good luck. Be strong and God Bless.

You do not know me. I lost a son in 2000 named Jason. I just lost my mom Oct 3, 07, my dad Nov 23, 07. I just lost my nephew (30) in Afghanistan in September, 08. Beth, I remember right before you and Jason went to Alaska he was out shopping for a necklace for you. He wanted it to be perfect. He must of gone to a dozen different shops. I remember him calling me that day, he was a nervous wreck, asking me 21 questions about what you would like. No matter what necklace he picked, it was going to be perfect no matter what because it was for you and it came from the heart filled with so much love. He loved you Beth with all his heart.

I am so very sorry for your loss. There are no words that I can offer that will ease the pain of losing a son. I can tell you that I will be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. If you ever need anything, I am still with the dept of Labor and will be there for you. I am just sincerely heartbroken for you. May God comfort your family.

I am so sad to hear we have lost one of our own family. I wish I could have come to his service to personally convey my love and support for all those he left behind. As always, I will keep him and you in my thoughts and prayers.

I have not words that could possibly express the loss you are experiencing. My heart bleeds for all of you!
I loved this kid from the first time I met him here in Colorado when he and my son, Tom, came for a visit. He was special. But I've got to say my favorite thing about Jason was feeding that boy. He did love to eat and I loved feeding him.
Jason, I'll remember you always, may the angels keep you safe.

The Final Salute
“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.
This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Cpl. Jason Karella our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Jason. And to Jason it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the Corps and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Jason, you are a brave Marine Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.
