Jimmy I still think about your laugh all the time. I can't believe it's almost been another year. Another year and another night of wishing and hoping I could change all this and could of done something. I know you see me and see my heart so you know this already but let me get it off my chest that although I hate the memories of that terrible day and would give anything to change it. If it had to end the way it did I will take the hurt and pain I feel in exchange for being able to tell you I love you all over again. That is one thing that helps me get by.You were one of a kind Jimmy and I miss you all the time. You will never be forgotten and you will live with me forever.

I didn't know Spc. James M. Clay. I only did his evaluation with the doctor when he came in and prepared him for the memorial for his unit at the hospital in Iraq. I have never forgotten that day and the phone call that stated a soldier with the Arkansas National Guard had been killed in a vehicle accident and was coming to my hospital. I waited hours after my shift that day because I wanted to make sure he was taken care of and honored the proper way before leaving Iraq. I remember shortly after looking at an Army Times newspaper and seeing his face and remembering that day like it just happened. I wear a memorial bracelet with his name and unit on my right wrist. He will never be forgotten by me. I also roomed just a short distance from where he stayed in Al Asad. I wish his family the best and may God watch over you all.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith:
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

James, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen heroes. You like so many other soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and every fallen soldier and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you James and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home were able to sleep without fear and know that we are safe because you and your fellow soliders stood watch. To the Clay family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of James and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

To the Clay family,

I know there are no words to say, except how sorry I am for your loss. May you hold James' memory in your heart and please remember he shall never be forgotten.

...For you every single soldier
Those who served so honorable
Your life was forever altered
While I’m home safe and free
I stand with grateful admiration
I stand respectful and so proud
I know I’m only a civilian
And I don’t even know if it’s allowed.

But I salute you; allow me the honor
to salute you with permission let me say
Even though I hold no rank know that from my heart
My humble gratitude comes from the deepest part.
I salute you.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

I met James when his mother and I were co-workers at Collin's Oldsmobile in 1984 and while I do not know James, I am indebted to him for sacrificing his life while fighting to protect the many freedoms I enjoy in this country. Our Father's word comforts us and assures us that to be absent from this flesh body is to be INSTANTLY returned, (in our spiritual body),to Our Father who made all souls. So at the same time that we mourn James passing, as Christians, we can also be exceedingly happy for James, who is now FULLY alive in an incorruptable body. Praise God!

To the family and friends of SPC Clay, our families hearts and prayers are with you. My little brother is in Jimmy's unit in Iraq and wasn't far behind the accident. When he finally got in touch with us to tell us the news, you could feel the pain and devastation in his voice to have lost such a wonderful comrade. He spoke very highly of Jimmy. Although I cannot personally relate to your devastation and how you must feel, my most hearfelt thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope that you all find the comfort and guidance you need to get through this difficult time.
SPC Clay,
Thank you for your service to this wonderful nation. It's because of you that we can live freely. Freedom does not come free and you have shown us the cost by giving the ultimate sacrifice. You are a hero among many and will never be forgotten. Go rest high!
To SPC Clay's Comrades in Iraq:
You are all heroes. Keep your heart strong and keep faith in what you do. Fight for what is right and preserve the dignity of SPC Clay's memory. God Bless you all and may He bring each of you home to your families.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Spc. James M. Clay our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for James. And to James it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Army and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. James, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to James’ family and loved ones.
