Gunny V, 10 yrs have passed yet you are not nor will you ever be forgotten. I'll always remember us carpooling to drill and back. The 1 1/2 drive would feel like 10 minutes cause you were always telling stories and cracking jokes. You led from the front and left no one behind. Fair winds and following seas Gunny. To Marcelo's family and friends, I ran the 5k in The Run for the Fallen today in Riverview, FL (Tampa) and had the honor of running for Marcelo. There was a beautiful ceremony and I took pictures by the cross they made for him with his picture and name on it. I cried for the beautiful man I had never met and for his family and friends. I wanted to learn more about him and everything I've read has talked about what a kind, loving man he was and I am truly honored to have had the chance to run for him. I just wanted to reassure you that he is not forgotten and continues to impact the lives of others. Thank you Marcelo for your service and I hope I made you proud today!

Machi:

It's been almost 2 years since you left this earth. I still cannot believe that you are no longer here with us. Although not a day goes by that I don't think of you, this time of the year is always the hardest. I miss you like you have no idea. You were the father I never had, and I feel like a huge part of me is gone. I am not a very expressive person, and sometimes I feel like I didn't say "I Love You" enough times to you, but I want to let you know that I did, and I will always LOVE you. I wish you were still here with us, but unfortunately you're not. You have touched lives and made a difference in many people, and you will never be forgotten. Every year that goes by is a struggle for our family, and you being gone is something that we will never heal from, but we find comfort in knowing that you are in a much better place than the rest of us. I love you very much, and miss you!

”Honor and Remember” - “Project Compassion” We love our Soldiers! We love our country and we cannot express enough love and compassion to the families of our fallen heroes. War does not discriminate – It breaks our hearts to see the faces of the fallen. We want to give this gift to the hero’s Mother, Father and/or spouse. We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization! Almost 2,000 portraits have been completed and shipped to the parents and or spouse - at no cost as this is a gift from one American to another!
This is a gift! We have wonderful sponsors who help with the costs, and want you know that everyone here at Project Compassion does and will always CARE.

Gunny V- Yesterday I got back from a trip to Bridgeport and Hawthorne. Its the first time I've been there since you and I did the work ups. I didn't get to fish in Pickle Meadow this time. MSgt A and I are now down at the wing and we are constantly reminding each other of how lucky we were to have worked with you. We had a thing today called "Theatre of War" Remember that tall PAO Marine? Well he was there too. We hadn't seen each other in quite a while. We reminisced and I gave him one of the last knives from the ones we all got. He deserved it. He got his CAR while he was there. Definitely looks a lot older than when we saw him last!
I have met your family twice and although it was hard, I'm very glad I did. My kids got to meet your family. They have made quite a connection. I just wanted to stop in and say hi. I hope I can live up to the standards you set for me.

To the Velasco Family,
My deepest sympathy to the Velasco family and his friends. I went to boot camp with then Recruit Velasco back in July 18, 1994 at Parris Island, SC. We were part of Alpha Company Platoon 1001. I remember him as being the oldest in the platoon while most of us were barely out of high school. He didn't get picked on as much by the Drill Instructors because he was a little bit older than our DI's. He was a leader in every way and we all looked up to him for guidance. He kept everyone motivated in the platoon and we were all able to graduate and earned the title "Marine". Marcelo you will be missed but you are in good hands with Lord and the angels above. Semper Fidelis and Rest in Peace my brother.

Oh, Marcelo, I don't think there was a kinder, gentler soul! I was just telling some of his Marine buddies from Zagreb that I so remember him always saying "I am in love...in love with LIFE" That is how I will always remember Marcelo: a lover of life and all things positive. I have never met a happier, more optimistic person, and it is so true when we all say that we are all better people for knowing Marcelo. I feel so fortunate to have met you Marcelo! It is in disbelief that I find out just last night that my dear friend Marcelo Velasco had passed away...
I send all my love and support to Marcelo's family specially his mom, whom I didn’t know personally, but heard so much through Velasco himself.
Shark, as we called him in Zagreb was an excellent friend, a guy we could all count on, everybody loved him, he had such a great personality, he made friends everywhere he went, local Croatians, expats and within the U.S. Embassy...
Him and I were in the MSG Zagreb Detachment.
Even though we had lost touch in the past years, he was always in my thoughts… always wondered what would Velasco be up to... And always hoping for a reunion of the Zagreb Det and friends... I guess we will not meet again here on earth, but eventually we'll meet and have ourselves some Ojushko Pivo on the MSG Det of heaven…
And I know for sure that “If the Army or the Navy, ever look on heavens scene, they will see the streets are guarded by United States Marines” You, my dear friend…

Things haven't been the same
Since you've been gone.
Often I sit and wonder
How I'd carry on.

When I read the news,
I didn't know what to do.
It happened so suddenly,
It just couldn't be true.

How can it be
That you’re no longer here.
I’d waited so long
For you to appear.

How can I pretend
That I'm not still in pain,
And wipe away the tears
That fall like rain?

I remember that day,
The day that we met,
And your smiling face
I will never forget.

A white paper Rose
was your first ever gift.
This memento,
I will forever keep.

This is my promise,
A vow I will keep;
You'll be in my heart
Until our souls meet.

To the family of Marcelo I would like to convey my deepest sympathy. I did not know Marcelo all that well, we met in Hawaii in Sept. of 08'. We hit it off right away had a few drinks, shared war stories and played tourist. I could tell right away he was a soldier's soldier. It was an honor to have met and gotten to know him even a little. I know that even now he is standing watch over all of us.

Dear Velasco family,
I am greatly hononourd to have met a wonderful human being. The time that Marcelo spent in Australia with my sister Ivanka and my family will always be treasured. Marcelo was a guest of honor at my wedding day some 5 years ago, and I have never seen my sister so happy in her life. He sure did rock the dancefloor to the Croatian music! The two of them looked amazing together. I loved the stories he had of fighting for his country, i loved his american slang, i loved the fact that he would jog/run everywhere-literally!! loved the way he could make us laugh, and loved the fact that he is just a great guy to be in company with. My husbands family also send their deepest condolences, they remember him fondly. My husband and I really enjoyed being with Marcelo, a great honest man. We will miss him deeply. Marcelo, may god be with you always. Heaven is your home now and I know that you will always be watching over your family and of course my dear sister who will never ever ever forget you. We love you deeply Marcelo.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith:
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

Marcelo My HERO, My LOVE,

From the moment we met at the Marine house in Zagreb, Croatia in 1999, I knew my life had changed forever. God had sent this wonderful gift - YOU. You gave me the best years of my life and I am blessed to have been a part of yours.
We truly had a wonderful love which spanned continents and countries. From the days in Tirana-Albania, Croatia, The Hague, where you served as a Marine detachment to the US embassies; to of course Miami, New York, Melbourne-Australia and all the other places we travelled together.
Marcelo you truly were my soulmate, the man who made my day, everyday!, who gave me joy, who made me smile, who made me laugh, who wanted to share his life with me and the man who made my world. Marcelo you were a man of true character, devotion and deep love. I will never forget all those cherished years we had together my love, they were extraordinary. There were only good times with us because you and I were always a team. I was your babyruchi and you were my Action Man. I love you so much Marcelo that I am lost without you. The pain of losing you is unbearable yet I have comfort in knowing that you are at peace and rested in God's Kingdom. You are my angel and I know you are looking down and watching over me.

I am blessed to have been the love of your life and thankyou for the beautiful memories, my love.

YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN MY DEAREST MARCELO. MY HEART IS YOURS ALWAYS.
You will forever live in my memories and my heart.
Goodbye my love and one day we will be reunited again.

Dear cousin,
Words cannot begin to express how we really feel in our hearts right now, but what I can say is that I love you with all my heart and always will. You were and are the kindest, humblest, sweetest, caring and most patient person I knew and I was immensely fortunate to have you as a cousin and to have shared my life with you. I know that wherever you are now you are at peace together with your dad.

Go fly free Machicito. YOU WILL ALWAYS LIVE IN MY HEART.
Tu prima que te adora,

Machi

Dear cousin,
I agree with Jeannette that you were such a kind man that everyone who had the luck to meet you was charmed by your sympathy and truly friendship. In my case, I had the opportunity of meeting you on January 1982 when you went for a vacation to Cochabamba, some months after your beloved father passed away. I keep nice memories about the time we spent together. The second time we have a contact was on December 2000, you were in Holland and I was in Morocco you gave me a call and we were trying to fix a date but unfortunately it was not possible. When you called me, I was so happy for listening your voice that I realized that in spite of the distance and the time we were still very close friends because you were more than a cousin, you were a brother and I will always keep your memory in my heart.
Rest in Peace my dear brother,

Fernando

Marcelo, God bless you soldier and thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation and for paying the ultimate price for our freedom.. You are now in great company with God and so many other fallen heroes before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was killed in action in Iraq and my final promise to him was to never forget him and our fallen heroes, we will never forget the commitment and sacrifice of our American Heroes. To the Velasco family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Marcelo and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

Sinceramente,
Ana Méndez
