On this Memorial Day I was fortunate enough to visit the gravesite of my CPL Gaffney. Although I did not know him well I did serve in 2-506 and unfortunately there on 24 Dec 2008. I want the family to know that you have been in my thoughts and prayers for years. Especially the two young girls that lost their father, I think of you all the time. Your Dad was a American hero and he will be missed greatly. May God bless you all.

I had the honor of being in CPL Gaffney's squad in Iraq for a few months in 2007. It was truly a privilege to serve with someone with his level of dedication and motivation to fight the good fight. I will always remember him. Since I learned of his death a few weeks ago I have been thinking back and remembering the time we spent together. I will always remember him. I want to thank his family for his service and wish you the very best.

To the Gaffney family:
May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

Gaffney, you will be missed. When I think of you all I can remember is that shot you took with the .50 cal on our way to Talil... I was the driver, Trotter was the TC. You about crapped your pants and we all laughed for the rest of the trip. (don't worry, actual details of that night will be kept between us 3) Memories that make us laugh are what gets us through the pain. I'm glad we have some of those with you. I think about that IED we were hit by in Iraq, and the experiences we share and it makes me sad to know you're gone. You definitely touched a lot of people and for that reason you will live forever. I decided to look you up because now I am in afghanistan and I found out I am about 20 miles from where you met your fate. For this reason, I know that if you're able to you will be protecting me.
Take care my friend-

I thought of you today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday, and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories & a picture in a frame. Your memory is a keepsake, from which I'll never part. God has you in his arms, I have you in my heart. Love you.

To the parents of Cpl. Charles Gaffney:
I know your pain
I know your sorrow
It feels as though there's no tomorrow
It's Christmastime
Your child is gone
But know that from the great beyond
He's watching you
And is so proud
Wanting you to sing strong and loud
Allow this Christmas season in
So loving life can begin again.

Charles, a man who lived his life deeply; son, husband, father, brother, friend to many.
A man nobody can replace.
Living his life the best way he could and always trying hard to do well at everything he set his mind to.

He was smart, wise, and fearless of the danger of his mission; always ready to go.
We all miss you so much. Mariann

Dear Mariann,
It was an honor to place the flowers at your brother's grave on Memorial Day. I wish your family could have come to Ft. Campbell the following weekend. They are building a memorial at the regimental headquarters...the dedication ceremony was wonderful. At the Army Ball the following evening, they had a video with all of those killed in action. At the point each hero's photo came up, the soldier's who had been touched by him cheered...it was amazing...overwhelmingly touching, in fact. I have a copy of this DVD and can make a copy for your family. Or you could call his unit, Vai, or LTC Ell. Take care and Godbless. Just remember, the Army is a family...we're all in this together.

I knew Chuck many years ago and didn't know of the sacrifice he made until I saw his name in the Memorial Day handout at the National Cemetary in Cave Creek. Please accept my deepest thanks for the service he gave. Although I hadn't seen him in 17 years, I will always remember Chuck as a gentleman who believed in treating all people with dignity and respect.

To the Gaffney family,
There are no words in the English language to express the compassion I feel for you at this time. The true depth of emotions you are feeling now and in days and years to come cannot be described either. Know in your heart that your 101st “family” recognizes Charles as a true American hero...it is through sacrifices of soldiers and their families like ours that American freedom is preserved and humanity is improved. My son Ryan was also killed in action. Each experience is different, as is the way each person processes their grief, but I have found an amazing amount of support these past six months from the Army and Ryan’s 101st brothers that he loved. Though it can never bring him back, it helps to know how much they respected him. I hope for all of you that you experience the same support I did. When I visit my son’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery, I will say a prayer at his as well.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Cpl Charles Gaffney our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Charles. And to Charles it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing terrorist forces in Afghanistan. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Charles, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Charles’ family and loved ones.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

an email I received from my husband who currently on assignment at Bagram Air Field, Afghanistan:

I was at the fallen comrade ceremony in Bagram for this man. It is a ceremony where all of the people on the base line the main street here and pay their respects as the fallen soldier and some of the men he served with take his body to the plane for transport back home. It is a very moving and beautiful tradition. I hope the family gets to see the video. They do not allow pictures, sunglasses (this one was at night) and the only recording is the video tape done by the military following the casket.

If you go, tell them I thank him and them for their service and sacrifice. Also, tell them about the ceremony.

I was not having a very good night that night, but I went anyway. Afterward, my troubles seemed a lot less important. I didn't know he was from Arizona until I read it in the papers afterward, as they don't tell us who it is or where they are from.

My deepest condolences to CPL Gaffney's Families. I have had the pleasure to serve with CPL Gaffney in Iraq 2006-2007. My dearest friend/brother, you served so brave and proud! Before we deployed, I remember I was driving to work and heard you on the country station radio talk show before I even met you, I remember you saying you were an infantry and ready to deploy with a SECFOR Company. You have always enjoyed being a grunt, and I remember like it was yesterday when we were training in Camp Shelby out in the fields, you taught me how to move quitely through the woods as a grunt and always keep my head low. We sat on the plane together going to Balad and how we had our cameras out, snapping away at each other. You always took the time to stop by Combat S-1 just to say hey SGT, I appreciate all that you do, you made it your mission to tell S-1 admins that we were doing a great job everytime. I had to chase you away a few times but then would find you behind the block walls having a smoke break.
You always came by with a HUGE smile to share pictures of your beautiful girls, then asked me to scan and make copies for you, just so you can have several pictures of your girls. Everytime you talked about your girls, you always had a big glow and your smiles remains in my heart. Gaffney, I will miss you dearly but know you are in a better place!

CPL Gaffney,
It was a pleasure and honor to serve with you in Iraq in 2006-2007. You always approached me with a smile and made me laugh. You are brave and noble, I will miss you. I will be in continual prayer for your family, especially your girls. I remember you showing me a picture of them with a beaming smile on your face. To the Gaffney family, I cannot express just how deeply sorry I am for your loss. God be with you and ease your pain replacing it with comfort and peace. See you in heaven Gaffney.

I remember the first time I saw you as a little guy. You were always so brave looking after your sisters, helping your family build the home in East Fairfaield, Vt., and always trying to play tricks on me. I knew you were special when you were young and we were blessed when you became part of our family. I will always be grateful to have had you as my nephew. Hug Grandma for me and always keep that silly grin on your face. You are loved. Your father and family have so much to be proud of. Thank you, Charles, for my freedom. Aunt Janet
