I did not know you but I thank you for your dedication and service to the fight for freedom that most of the time we as civilians take for granted. Sean, god bless you soldier and thank you for your service to a grateful nation, forever we will mourn you and all of our fallen heroes both before and after you. On 5/6/08 my nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward was killed in action in Iraq while on a routine patrol. My promise to him was that I would never forget him but also those fallen before and after him. When I made that promise to him the day we laid him to his final resting place I did not realize how often I would need to make entries on Legacy and it just breaks my heart knowing that so many other families have and will continue to feel the pain that our family has endured. To the Mccune family please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. PFC Sean P. McCune, Kuwait, OCT 2009

SGT Justin Anderson

March 8, 2009

I was PFC Sean McCune's squad leader, and this was my speech at his memorial in Samarra, Iraq:

"Just over a year ago we said goodbye to Derek Dobogai, Garrett McLead, Jason Paton and the others who died in the tragic UH-60 crash in Kirkuk. That day I prayed I wouldn’t have to attend another one of these. Unfortunately that wish could not be granted, and here we are again to bid farewell to another member of the Cacti family. In each of the 4 deployments I’ve been on to this country, I have lost someone very close to me. However this is the first time that I have had to say goodbye to one of my own Soldiers, and that feeling is somewhat incongruent to the others. Any leader can understand the sentiment that occurs over time as they watch one of their young and inexperienced Soldiers mature and cultivate into skilled warriors. And the pride I was developing for PFC Sean McCune was no different.

The first time I met PFC McCune was the first day I reported back to the unit after I returned from Ranger School in August of last year. He was assigned to Rear Detachment since he had just recently arrived to the battalion, and was awaiting the return of Alpha Company from NTC. I talked to the group of young Soldiers, gave them advice and guidance about the island, and asked each of them how they felt about coming to Alpha Co. When I asked PFC McCune, he said, “I told them I wanted to go to the best company, so they sent me here.” As fate should have it, he was soon assigned to 1st Platoon, and ultimately to my squad. I was glad to have him, and his team leader at the time, SGT Robertson and I promptly went to work to integrate him and prepare him for our upcoming deployment.

PFC McCune adapted very quickly to what he was confronted with. He neither complained, nor questioned anyone’s guidance, not even that of his young squad mates. In fact, Sean was known to take time out to help his buddies whenever he could. On more than one occasion, he would help PFC Eash study for the Soldier of the Month board. At Basic Training, he assisted PVT Pridgen in learning the Soldier’s Creed during their free time. He wasn’t the most outgoing individual we had, yet his performance spoke for itself. It amazed me that, given his stature, he constantly rocked out to heavy metal; but “To each, his own.” However it most definitely did not surprise me that at the time of his death, he was conducting weapons maintenance shortly after being relieved from guard duty. That was the type of infantryman he was.

That being said I know that PFC McCune is watching over us now, trying to help each one of us to refocus on the mission we came here to accomplish. Even though he is not walking next to us in formation, his spirit follows us on every patrol.

PFC Sean McCune, you were one of the best Soldiers that I have ever had the privilege to lead. You will be missed to the highest degree by the Avenger Platoon, and Apache Company. I wish you farewell. Godspeed and safe journey."

My heart goes out to the family and friends of Sean. He will be forever missed by us all, and I wish I had more young men just like him.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

I just wanted to tell you all how very sorry I am. I was heart broken when I heard about Sean. I often think about the times I'd be over at the McCune/Gibson house with Amber and Sean was always sure to bug us atleast every 15 minutes or so. He was a great kid and I'm so proud to say that I knew him. I'll be keeping you all in my prayers.

Im sorry to hear that this happened. Im also from Euless texas and am married to an infantry man myself. He leaves within the next 3 weeks for his second tour.

I know this will be hard, but he died in honor. And he will be forever remebered as a hero who steped up to fight for his country when most others wouldnt. He seems like he was a wondeful person and anyone would have been lucky to have known him.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to Pvt. Sean P. McCune our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Sean. And to Sean it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country while opposing terrorist forces in Iraq. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Sean, you are a brave Warrior, a true Patriot and a national Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,409 members of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Sean’s family and loved ones.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of loss. I am the mother of a US Paratrooper currently deployed. I cannot even begin to imagine the grief and sorrow that you are encountering. Father we entrust our brother Sean to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Sean in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathies.

I am Deeply Saddened to learn of the loss of Pvt. Sean P. McCune. The Price this Brave Young Soldier and his family have paid for this country and for freedom, Will Never Be Forgotten.

May Sean Rest Safely now, in the Loving Hands of God and may the Healing Grace and Comfort of the Lord be with the McCune family.
There will Never Be Enough Ways to Humbly Thank these Young Heroes for their Sacrifices, my brother among them. Killed in action in Vietnam in 1967.

"Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain thee."
~ Psalm 55:22 ~

Sincerely hoping that you can feel the thoughts of caring and support that surround you today and in the difficult days ahead, as this Grateful Country mourns with you, for Someone Very Precious to you, Who Is A True American Hero to all of us.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
