I went to basic with Chris @ Ft. Knox and always remembered him as a funny great guy. I got out our basic yearbook today just to try and find some old buddies and stumbled with great shock to find out of his passing. I feel like I was kicked in the stomach and want to express my sympathy towards his passing to his family! God Bless

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Howick Family know that we recently sent Care Packages to American troops in the war zones. Each box carried a dedication sheet that includes the name, service information and a photo of your loved one. We recognize that this is a humble tribute, but we wanted you to know that it is heartfelt and made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals in the youth hockey community and beyond. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.
Sincerely,
Charlie Gili & Family

Between 2000-2001 I met Chris when he came to work with me at the ALSE shop at Knox field. He soon wanted to become a full time crewmember and FE. Our SFEI told me to start to train him for progression and we became pretty much a battle crew. We flew allot with Mr. Thompson and Cramer. I remember turning down 5 birds in one night because Chris's pre-flights where just that detailed. He was a real good friend both on and off duty. One day around 2002, we were talking and I mentioned how much I liked Legos even as an adult. He said that he had some at his house that he wanted to get rid of and to stop by after work. Later that day I met his wife and saw his Glider (needed lots of work though) and that's when he gave me the box of old Legos. It was not a complete box but had a Special Silver brick in it. My kid was only two so he said I should wait and give it to her when she gets older. I went to flight school in 2003 he kept in touch and he made FE almost the same time I pinned WO1. I went to Alaska after Rucker and other than email we didn't talk a lot. I heard he had deployed to Afghanistan and kept him in my prayers. I heard at work one day about a bird going down and like all of them I cautiously check www.armyaircrews.com to see if it was someone I knew. I knew a lot of the fallen I started in CH47's in 1995 so every look I recognized a name. When Chris's name came up It really hit me as being the first personal friend the war had taken. I've lost 6 more since then and everyone has been hard. Today I pulled that old box of Lego's out as my now three kids are sick and need an indoor toy. I had kept it closed as he was killed before I could give them to my oldest. They felt very important to me and I decided that I can't just sit on them it wasn't right. I pulled the silver brick out and put Chris's name on it to keep aside for remembrance. My kids are having a blast with them and I explained that they came from a soldier who died in the war that was a friend of mine. My 8 year old daughter said “Daddy it's an honor to play with Lego's from a hero who died for our Country!” It brought tears to my eyes and I found this site when I searched for Chris's name. I will never forget you Chris it was an honor to fly with you!!! CW2 Retired Andrew Smith

Dear Una and Noel Howick,
It has now been more than three years since your terrible loss of Christopher, but I am sure you miss him every day. He sounds like he was a wonderful man, a true American hero. As a member of Prayer Shawls for Fallen Soldiers, we would be honored to send each of you a prayer shawl in honor and memory of Chris if you would like them. We do this to show our compassion and gratitude for your and his ultimate sacrifice. If you or anyone else in Chris' family would like one or more shawls, please contact me with names and addresses so we can send those. Again, we would be honored to do that. Thank you and God Bless.

I served with Chris at Ft Rucker, I was so sad to hear that a good friend someone that loved to laugh and joke around had passed away In Afganistan. I will never forget the times we had crewing together and working on that old truck of his. I miss his antics greatly. I wish the best of his family.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.
The Wind on The Downs
“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”
(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )
Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….
“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”
I did not know Christopher, but I am remembering
his service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side
i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.
can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.
i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.
it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side
the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.
i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I was a friend of Chris's in high school and our early 20s and just today learned of his passing and am deeply saddened by the news.
I remember when he first mentioned that he had enlisted in the Army - we were shocked - but given some thought - Chris was ideally suited for a career in the Armed Forces. I knew him during his first 10 years of service, and the Armed Forces suited him well - he was especially proud of his work with army helicopters.
My condolences to the Howick family, words cannot express my sorrow.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.
Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.
I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.
REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

I flew with SSG Howick several times. I worked for CJSOTF-A picking up enemy combatants. Chris and his crew flew me to several locations around Afghanistan.
On my last day in country, I ran into Chris and Sgt. Wiekakamp at the green bean coffee shop at Bagram. We talked and laughed about the time his crew left me and my partner at a fire base.
What a super young man he was. I will always remember my flights and especial Chris's crew that transported me from place to place. God rest your soul.

I am also a Chinook Flight Engineer, flew the Asadabad route and beyond many times, same way that Chris did. It takes a special person to be a Flight Engineer, and an even more special person to do the job while in a war zone. I can say that he is truely a hero, and will always be remembered.
To the crew
May your APU always start.
May the wind be at your back
May the sun always be on your face,

I am the mother of a Fort Drum, 10th Mountain, 3rd BCT soldier on deployment in Afghanistan.
I want to offer your entire family my heartfelt prayers and condolences on the loss of Chris! My heart aches for the pain you are going through. Cherish and hold close the memories of Chris. May God grant you peace in knowing what a special man Chris was.
I talked to my son on Monday, and he expressed his sadness about what had happened to his “battle buddies” and wished for me to convey his condolences as well. He promises to carry on with the job that Chris and the others were doing.
Know that your pain is shared by many military families across this nation. We know and we care.

but rather openings in Heaven

I so hope you find this site, because so many of us who have had the unbearable news that you have just had, have been here. This is the beginning of a journey no one in the world wants to begin, yet so many of us are here together. Your son, husband, father was one of the selfless ones who knew service was the very best choice in life. I'm sure he hoped to serve and return to his loved ones, as all do. Yet some of us are left to go on without the one we love best. Our thoughts and prayers are with you as you try to find your feet again. Chris still wants the best for you all until he sees you again. I walk the same path as I miss my son Benjamin Schuster, killed in Ramadi Iraq on February 25, 2006. Our love for our most special soldiers will give us what we need to honor them in the ways left to us.

To the Family of Staff Sgt. Christopher T. Howick:
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courgeous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guestbook for the rest of my life. We lost a son 12/1/05.
I know first hand there are no words right now that will bring you the comfort and peace you need. Just know that you are not alone. My heart, thoughts, and prayers are with you all as you mourn this loss. We don't know each other, will probably never meet, but will forever be united in the loss of our Heroes. We have, unfortunately joined a group none of us wanted to join, an ever-growing group of families in this situation. May God grant you peace and strength to get through this and be able once again to smile at a memory rather than have only the tears that flow so easily now. To be so proud of your loved one and so saddened at the same time is a mix of emotions very difficult to deal with. I am sorry that I never knew your soldier personally, but none of these courageous men and women will be forgotten. They will never be able to be replaced, but sometime, someday your loving memories will help to sustain you. This courageous soldier will forever now be your Angel watching over you all for the rest of your lives. It's what brings me some measure of peace and comfort and I hope it will you as well. To his family and friends in pain, I offer this comfort. When you find yourself in that dark sorrowful place, think not only of how you will miss him, but instead recall the years, days, hours and minutes gifted to you by his presence. If you ever want to talk, I'm only an e:mail away and would love for you to tell me more about your Hero. God Bless this courageous soldier and family.
