Michelle R. Ring Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 7, 2007.
Michelle R. Ring would do anything for her two boys. At Christmastime, she would fill a shopping cart with gifts for them. She bought a little four-wheeler for her oldest son last year, and gave her younger son a miniature dirt bike with training wheels. She was generous with other family members and friends, as well. "She would spoil everybody," said a sister, Karen Harbuck. "Michelle always wanted to take care of her big sisters like she was the big one. Any time I needed something, she was there." Ring, 24, of Martin, Tenn., was killed July 5 by mortar fire in Baghdad. He was assigned to Fort Benning and is survived by two sons, Marc, 7, and Brandon, 5. Ring grew up in Chugiak, Alaska, the youngest of three sisters. After Marc was born, Ring got her GED and moved to Tennessee, where her parents lived. She worked at a Tyson chicken processing plant and then enlisted. Even during tough times, though, Ring was always happy and upbeat, Harbuck said. "She hid a lot of her hurt feelings, because she wanted everyone around her to be happy," she said. "She was always the one to be cheering you up."

I distinctly remember 10 years ago when, taking a break from my regular duties, I went to the MWR facility at Victory Base Complex (VBC-near Baghdad airport) for a workout. SPC Ring was guarding the facility; we exchanged military courtesy and briefly talked about the hot weather - pretty standard stuff. But as I walked away from the seemingly mundane encounter, I recall thinking about "everyday duty being done by extraordinary Soldiers like her". Don't know why it stuck in my mind, but it did. And the next day, Thursday 5 July, VBC was hit with 5 rockets fired from the south and northeast. There were nine casualties, including one KIA, SPC Michelle Ring, and I immediately recalled our brief conversation just the day before. For some reason, the memory of her quiet professionalism has stuck with me all these years. I will forever be inspired by this hero's service to our country. She is not forgotten.

I am just lost for words. CPL Ring and I attended and graduated basic training together. Our friendship came so natural. Oct 12, 2015 I was going through a post on FB about fallen veterans and was choked up when I saw her picture. Michelle you were an amazing person during the time I have known you and will be truly missed.

Hello. I am Loreanna McKinney. I am a Senior at Winfield City High School in Winfield, Alabama. In my Goverment class, we are doing research to find veterans who might have something in common with us. My middle name is Michelle, also. Here at my high school I am apart of many things such as student council, I am vice president of my senior class, clubs, and apart of out high school's dance team. Without your sacrafice, I would not be able to tkae part in all these things and be blessed with the freedoms that I have. No amount of thanks will ever be enough, but I would just like to say thank you for defending our country. I am honored to get to share a name with such a wonderful woman. Thank you again. If you would like ot contact me, please email my teacher at [email protected].

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

Having lived for many years in Alaska, I was saddened to hear of another loss from the area. But then I learned that Michelle and I both come form the same area. (I grew up in Salem and recently came home.) It breaks my heart everytime one of our children are taken 'over there', but touches me even deeper when it is 'family'. Though I am not a religious person, may you find solace and understanding from the strength you receive in your faith. May her boys grow to love her more now than ever before and may life give them all they shall ever need or deserve. My thoughts and wishes are with you and yours at this time of loss. -Arrow Litster in Salem, Oregon

To the Family of Michelle Ring....Michelle was assigned to me by Soldiers Angels, an organization that i recently joined. I was committed to writing her often, and sending atleast one care package per month. We had only been connected for 2 short months, but i enjoyed our email exchanges. Until now, viewing the websites with her death information, i had never known what Michelle looked like. Just viewing her pictures for the first time. What a huge loss. I offer the family my deepest condolences, and i wish to pay you my condolences via phone, or email, at a time when you see fit. Please contact me when you see fit, i would love to hear a little more about Michelle. My warmest regards to you in your time of grief, and doubly to Michelle's young children. You're in my prayers.

Sincere sympathy and love from a RN in Gainesboro -
"MOTHER'S NOT GONE"
by- Patsy Jo Reed Sircy
When I was just a babe in arms,
You sheltered me from all harms;
Tucked me in, and fixed a light,
In case I was frightened in the night.
A MOTHER'S LOVE will never die,
You still reach out whene'r I cry;
As through the paths of life I trod
You made me know the Face of GOD.
Now you are Up There, side-by-side,
And still I know you are my guide;
It took me years to realize,
That was HIM there in your eyes.
Now I know you're in the plan,
You're part of GOD, I think a Hand;
MOTHER, dear, I know you're not gone,
You're the Hand that waits to lift me HOME!
God bless and keep you every day!PJ

As I read the local paper today from Kingsport, Tn, I saw the article about another hero whose life has been lost to this thing we call war, in Iraq. As a gold star mother myself I can relate to the pain and suffering her family will have to endure in the future. Please go to God in your hour of grief-he is the only one who will help you through this. The loss of a child is the most deepest kind of heartache a parent can ever feel. No matter the age, a child is always your child. In a mother's eyes they are still small children. To Michelle's parents I pray for peace of mind and the knowledge that she was and always will be a hero to our country. To her sons, may her pictures always remind them of the love she had for them and the courage it took to leave them and go to war so they may have freedom for the rest of their lives to live as they and WE please. I know words cannot soften your heart at this time but just know-you are not alone-there are so many more of us out here that have went through the exact same thing you are going through. It will be a rough road ahead. May God walk with you in your time of need and if you would ever need a friend please e-mail me. We can share the tears together. In loving memory of my son Cpl. Though this soldier is not yet known except to their unit or families, my grief for the loss of you son/daughter is felt. I know what it's like to loose your child in war as my son was killed in action too. It feels that your heart has been ripped from you and you don't understand why this happened to your child. I've felt all you will feel in the coming days and weeks and though I’m not close in relation to area, but I am very close by email. I offer any support to you and your family that I can. It's with the Grace of God that I've gotten through each day and with His healing love and comfort that I've been able to once again sleep at night and not cry each day. Believe me I do know how hard it is. May God continue to heal you and your family and contact me when and if you are ever ready, even if it's to vent or cry.
