PFC CALE CLYDE MILLER

PFC CALE CLYDE MILLER obituary

CALE MILLER Obituary

"The American Soldier does not fight because he hates who is in front of him. He fights because he loves who is behind him." Author unknown PFC Cale Clyde Miller, 23, Overland Park, KS, was killed during a combat mission in Maiwand, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, on May 24, 2012. The Stryker vehicle he was driving was struck by an improvised explosive device. Cale was a member of the Bravo Company, 4th Battallion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team (SBCT), Fort Lewis, WA. Cale was a 2007 graduate of Olathe Northwest High School where he was a member of the football and track and field teams, and he played trumpet in the marching and jazz bands. Cale attended classes at the University of Kansas, Johnson County Community College and Baker University. He joined the Army in February of 2011, and graduated from One Source Unit Training for the Infantry at Fort Benning, GA, before being assigned to his duty station at Fort Lewis. Just like his actions every day, Cale's final act on earth was selfless and thinking only of others. His death was honorable, and his ultimate sacrifice saved the lives of two of his Battle Buddies that he loved like brothers. Cale was the lead Stryker in every combat mission that he had been in, a testament to the fact that he was "the best of the best." Cale's Battalion Commander told his mother that he was known as "everyone's protector." His Sergeant who was with Cale on the combat mission, described how he had hand-selected Cale to be his Stryker unit's driver because he was "hands down, the best Stryker driver he had ever seen." Cale's attention to the details and care of his vehicle were unparalleled, and he was constantly striving for ways to make his Stryker perform to an even higher level. More importantly, his Sergeant shared with his mother that Cale had an uncanny knack for knowing exactly the right thing to say at exactly the moment it was needed. He was the force that pulled his Sergeant and his squad mates through many difficult days, and his sense of humor was unmatched. He was a fierce warrior on the battlefield, and he will be missed by all of his Army Brothers. On Memorial Day, a ceremony at the Kandahar Air Field was held and a flag that had flown over the White House, flew over Kandahar and was dedicated to Cale. His Sergeant received that flag and will be hand-delivering it to the family upon the Battalion's return to the United States at the end of their deployment. As much as he loved the Army, Cale also loved his family. He was the love of his family's life. His sense of humor was his hallmark, and he had the ability to see the light side of every situation. He often commented that his life was like a Seinfeld episode. Through all the hilarity, his relationships with his family were what he treasured most. Especially relevant to Cale was his relationship with his step-father who raised him, his "Dave", whom Cale had begun to emulate in his adult years. Dave is known for giving sound and practical advice and was the first one Cale called when he needed help. Cale once commented to his mother that although she might find it hard to believe, he was turning into the "Dave" of his group in the Army. His Battle Buddies turned to him frequently for advice, encouragement or simply a kind and funny word. Cale had an unbreakable bond with his sister, Courtney, whom he called "Coco." She was the ying to his yang, and they balanced each other out. Cale fiercely loved his mother, Debbie, and spoke of her often to his Battle Buddies. She loves him "to the moon and back" as she said often when he was a young child. His beloved three year old nephew Henry, or "Nenny" was a bright spot in Cale's life. Since being stationed in Washington, Cale always looked forward to Skyping with Henry and hearing all the latest news in Henry's life. Their last conversation centered on a certain bodily function that Henry found hilarious. So did "Unc." Occupying a special place in Cale's life was his "Auntie," Pam Williamson, her husband Brett, and their three sons Jack, Avery and Cole. Auntie and Cale collaborated on many musical endeavors, and his love of music came in large part from her. The boys were like his little brothers and were very special to him. Cale leaves behind a grieving but celebrating family: his parents, David and Deborah Collins, Overland Park, his sister and brother-in-law, Courtney and Frank Barden, Olathe, and nephew, Henry Barden, grandparents Carol Berry, Olathe, Bill and Paula Berry, Shell Knob, MO, Juanita Collins, Kearney, MO, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, family members, and Battle Buddies, far too numerous to name. You know who you are and you know Cale loved you. Also left behind was Sara, his Mach 1 Mustang, whom he worshipped, adored and waxed. Cale will be returned home on Mon., June 4. The City of Olathe will be celebrating his arrival by lining the streets with supporters. Route and time information is pending, please visit www.Penwell-Gabelolathe.com , for updated information. A visitation for friends and family to call upon the family will be held on Tue., June 5, 5-8 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church in Olathe. Finally, the Celebration of Cale's Life will be held on Wed., June 6, at 10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, Olathe. Private burial in Fort Leavenworth Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the USO to honor Cale's memory. It is clear that Cale touched the lives of everyone he encountered. His absence on earth will be felt profoundly, and he will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace, My Angel. Mommy loves you. To leave a message for the family, please visit www.Penwellgabelolathe.com.

I participated in a Memorial Day event this morning organized by the local mother of a fallen soldier, under the auspices of https://www.wearblueruntoremember.org/.
When we registered to do the 5K event, we were given the name of a fallen soldier - to walk in their memory. I had the honor of receiving your son´s name, and read it aloud (as all the participants read the names they were given) before we set out.
I have just finished reading Cale´s obituary. Please accept my deepest & heartfelt condolences for your unthinkable loss.

Most sincerely,
Priscilla

Cale,
I will never forget the day you passed. Know that your life had meaning. The things you did, the places you went, and what you stood for are things most will never achieve in a much longer life time. Thank you for standing with the courageous few who do what others dare not. I'm grateful for your life. I will not forget.

I am grateful for the life of PFC Miller. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.

I am humbled by the life he lived and the example that he set. If you need someone to wax that Mustang, let me know. I wouldn't ask to drive it. It would be an honor to keep it shining as brightly as his life did and as, I'm sure, his spirit does still.

We didn't personally know PFC Cale Miller; however, we wanted to express our sympathies. We lost our father, Edwin J. "Fritz" Turner, age 87, a WWII Veteran and USARNG Master Sergeant for 37 1/2 years. His inurnment was at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery on June 12, 2012, #261, Section T. We felt honored to learn that our father was laid to rest right next to PFC Miller. As we viewed the site, the cemetery caretaker told us PFC Miller's story. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your families at this time of grieving.

May God Bless all our military now and forever.

A call rang out that cut straight through my heart
A moment in time that none wish to hear.
Words that pierce like a very sharp dart
a time when there is no way to cheer.

Your son served his country well
His life was lost in a mission where he was lead.
Where in the road near a swell
his vehicle hit an I.E.D.

The pain this brings is hard to bear
you miss him dearly and wish only he were here.
Then the floods of memories come and go;
moments of sorrow and tears of loss.

The support you receive you never will forget
as it is your friends that help pull you through.
Though words alone will never replace
they do help fill you full of grace.

You wish and you wish as days slowly dredge by
that someone would wake you from this darken quagmire
but the days come and the days go
but for you there is no relief for your soul

Your son is a hero many have said
he died for freedom in which he believed.
Yes the memories come and flood my soul
and tears of sorrow will continue to roll.

For me a Hero he has always been
from the first time I saw his little grin.
A sense of pride I have always had
even in the times I made him mad.

Many memories I have both sad and glad.
Of those I will remember most
the times that cause my lips to smile
those are the ones most worthwhile.

Though as difficult as it may be,
remember and cherish deeply the ones that bring
that little curl upward that your mouth forms,
when you remember the time your son was born.

Cale I love you and will miss you dearly.

Love Dad

Death is the most important day of one's life. We ultimately prepare for it everyday of our lives. Cale completed his search for what he wanted to do and that search ended in a meeting with Jesus Christ.
Faith, Hope & Charity - Cale perfected this in his life when he gave up his life for his fellowman. Also,to give up your life for country in the fight for freedom is highly meritorious and not to be forgotten. He carried his Cross. Ultimately everyone has to in one way or another. Cale is a hero in our lives. He leaves behind those of his family who cared so much and loved him to his death and the hereafter. In Heaven there is no distinction between "hers" or "his". It is a perfect place of true love and happiness. At least we know Cale has earned that and can now help all his family and friends and even our countrymen toward this goal.
Father Herman from the Old St. Patrick's Oratory will have a mass said for Cale.Thank you, Father Herman. Cale now joins with the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all the heavenly community of angels and saints.
Jeff, you are in my prayers. You were a good father who loved his son so very much. Emily, you are in my prayers as you were a good mother to Cale. Deborah Collins, you are in my prayers also who as a mother will surely miss your son. And sweet Gabrielle, you are in my prayers. When you say your prayers remember Cale always will be there for you. Just call on him.

Love, Grandma Dasta

I was deeply saddened when I heard of another young soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice for his Country. As a Army veteran nothing tears at my heart more than hearing of a young man or woman losing their life in a combat zone. All those that have served this great country lost a family member today. I have lowered my flag to half staff in your honor Cale, but fly it everyday for the family that has been left behind. My deepest condolences to your father Jeff Miller and his wife Emily and to his mother Debbie.
