To my brothers and sisters,
across the state.
Don't mourn for me,
for I new my fate.

To my family and friends,
how I miss you so.
I'm ok,
Just want you to know.

To protect and to serve,
was the oath I took.
When I laid my hand,
on that holy book.

An officer of the law,
and I'm proud to say.
I laid down my life,
for you today.

I looked at my killer,
right square in the eye.
I was strong to the end,
now please don't you cry.

My job on earth is done,
and the good lord is here.
Don't worry about me,
I'll always be near.

You called me "POKE"
you all gave me that name.
Think of me often,
and I'll do the same.

I'll be waiting for you,
but please don't you hurry.
I'm here with the lord
so just don't you worry....

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Your senseless death still breaks my heart. Not too many people have the courage to do the job or fully appreciate what you did. I did and will continue to do so for the men and women that dedicate their lives to protect us. I hope your family knows how much we needed you and that you will always be missed.

I wanted to express my sympathy to the Pokorny family on the loss of Cpl. Pokorny. My brother is a police officer, and I am so proud of him and the work he does. Ever since this happened, I have thought of Cpl. Pokorny and his incredible valor every day. I have included his family and friends in my prayers, that they will find comfort and strength in God's love and in the outpouring of support from those who knew Cpl. Pokorny and those like me, who never knew him but are so sorry for the loss of such a hero. The world is a better place because of Cpl. Pokorny, and he will never be forgotten.

Joe, I only had the good fortune of knowing you for a short time, but you will be grievously missed. The pride you have in the uniform you wear and the job you did were clearly reflected when observing you. Our conversations truly let me know the excellent man and outstanding police officer you were. Your courageous acts of heroism both in the final minutes of duty and before will stand as a tribute for the world to know the greatness within you. You will be sorely missed by your family, your loved ones, your station, your troop, your community, and those of us privileged enough to call you "friend."

May your soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen

January 4, 2006

To the Pokorny family, I have known and worked with your son and father for over 20 years. He was always there if when you needed someone to talk to. Over those 20 some years, one thing that always stuck out about Joe was that he was always family first! He loved you all so very much and showed it in his everyday life. Even though we have not talked all that regular in the last year, he was never too far from my thoughts. Please just know that you all are in my prayers and thoughts. Joe will always be with you and everyone he has touched thorough his life. He is a wonderful person, son and father. Take care and God Bless.

January 4, 2006

Just over a year ago, my daughter, Kristen, a state police officer, surprised us by bringing a new "friend" to our family's annual "day-after Christmas" dinner. Little did we realize, as we chatted and played cards with him that day, how much of an impact this man, Joe Pokorny, would soon have on our family.

Joe and Kristen had found true love, peace and happiness together and were excited about the plans they were making for their future.

I will long remember the day of Corporal Pokorny's funeral - for the tremendous outpouring of support, for the surrealness of it all, that we were all just extras in some tragic play, and, finally, for the bitter reality of seeing your daughter in so much pain and being unable to soothe it away like you did when she was just a little girl.

Thank you, Joe, for the love you brought into my dear Kristen's life and may God be merciful to those that were left behind to mourn you.

Sincere sympathies to his children-always remember that your dad can and will live on within each of you through your beliefs and actions; to his parents-I cannot even begin to understand your grief at the loss of a son, but from what little I knew Joe, you both raised a caring and down-to-earth gentleman. To Kristen-you will always be his cupcake here on earth. It was so wonderful to see the two of you blossoming into one, the happiness and excitement the two of you generated when you were with one another and the love that was growing each day.

December 29, 2005

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I had the privilege of being married to Joe. Even though our marriage didn't last our friendship did for over 11 years. He was a great friend and a wonderful father. I also had the privilege of helping him and Stacy raise two polite, beautiful, smart and funny children.

Joe will be missed for his irreverant sense of humor and his ability to make things seem like they were going to be alright. He was proud to go "catch bad guys" and he would have been extremely honored for the respectful memorium paid to him. I miss him painfully and am so very proud of him. I know Jake and Ali will turn out to be the kind of adults that every one will want to know and have in their lives. They will always carry a piece of Joe and so will I. Thank you for watching over us all now. Because I know you are. Thank you also to all of the PSP that put their lives on the line daily and for being there for the Pokorny's and rest of the community. You are appreciated.

Dear Pokorny Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy in the loss of your loved one. I did not know him personally, but may have encountered him through my volunteer services with the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.

May you be comforted knowing, that he is in the loving arms of his CREATOR, and has joined the rank of GUARDIAN ANGEL. Please accept the enclosed praise in the honor of your loved one, and all POLICE OFFICERS who have ascended before him:

They are larger in stature, then most people are, and holds a job that others would fear. They enter into areas with unseen dangers. But the love of their job, would not allow them to waiver.

The two thoughts they hold deep as they walk out the door; " WILL they return to the loved ones they adore? WILL that kiss and hug to their loved ones, be the last one to treasure?"

They are the first to risk their lives; so that others may survive. They have seen sights that would make us cry; and when one of their own is lost, it is out of respect that we cry.

Many have left loved ones behind, or tended to someone else's loved one, at one time. For most of us our work stays at the office, But for a POLICE OFFICER, it's there 24/7.

A POLICE OFFICERS BOND IS STRONG AND TRUE, and their bond has always included you. This BROTHERHOOD you hear a POLICE OFFICER talk about, is a tribute to one and all. It covers every race, creed, and sex, no matter what part of the world you live in.

We THANK ALL POLICE OFFICERS for the protection they provide us, and SALUTE ALL THOSE WHO HAVE PAID THE ULTIMATE PRICE.

It is sad to lose a true warrior like Joe. His loss is felt throughout the Department, even by those who never met him. However, this loss will ultimately result in a stronger and more vigilant Department that will put the clamp on the criminals of this world. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family, friends, co-workers, and all law enforcement who mourn his passing. We will never forget, and we will unite to overcome his passing.

With heartfelt sympathy for the Pokorny family. Though I wasn't privileged to meet Cpl. Pokorny, I am the Mother of a Trooper, who shares the sad and proud feelings of all who cherish life and realize Cpl. Pokorny's ultimate sacrifice. God Bless and console you.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the Pokorny family; mere words cannot express the loss of a fine trooper, a good friend, and treasured dad, brother, and son.

When one of us falls, we all share the pain, anger, and grief.

Joe's sacrifice will not be in vain, may we all do our best to carry on in his memory.

With respects,

Sometimes Called Warriors

Without consideration for their personal safety.

Without prioritizing their individual needs for comfort, nourishment or compensation.

With confidence.

With concern.

With devotion.

They are standing on the front line, in a state of readiness, to ensure the well being of all within the Commonwealth.

They suit up in the armor of a uniform. A uniform that binds them with their colleagues. That joins them to their past. That reminds them they are the future. That energizes and defines why they must be here.

Putting aside the needs of their families, the call to duty is resounding in their ears. A call they must answer under the obligation of oath. A call they do not deny, knowing their fellow warriors depend upon them.

Their individual and collective acts of heroism may never be acknowledged. Reward is not why warriors choose this vocation. It is from a sense of purpose. A sense of honor. Because of Esprit de Corps.

No encountered hostility can ever be effectively suppressed without these valiant souls. The individual and the organization synergise, to perpetuate its life. They make the organization and it makes them.

The warrior is never alone, in this life or the next. Wherever we go fellow warriors will embrace us. For as this organizations spirit lives on, my devoted spirit to it also survives.

We warriors know this to be true.

To the family of Joe Pokorny,

I want you all to know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of my family. I had the distinct pleasure of having Joe as a midnight supervisor at the Belle Vernon Barracks. He was one of the most well known, well liked and respected supervisors I have ever worked with. Also, I will never forget the many early morning sunday softball games we played in together. Joe had the ability, whether we were winning or losing, to make the day more fun for everyone. He will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and will always be remebered as a great colleague, teammate, and most of all, friend.

To the Pokorny Family: It's been many years since my mother woke me to tell me that my father, a Pittsburgh police officer, had been slain in the line of duty. Please take solace in the knowledge that your Dad will never be gone, but will live forever in your hearts and in the heart of every State Trooper privileged enough to wear the same patch as Joe.

Just wanted to write to let the Pokorny Family know that I'm thinking of them at this time and would like them to know that I feel as though either the Parkway West or the Rosslyn Farms ramp should be renamed in his honor.

An American Hero died on 12 DEC 05. His name was Corporal Joseph Pokorny. I didn't know him, but a PSP Sergeant tells me Joe was a cop's cop. That makes him my brother. His family and brother Troopers will be in my prayers.
