Kathryn Hoolihan Obituary

HOOLIHAN KATHRYN RAND, 70, passed away June 20, 2003 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Kathryn moved to Florida at the age of ten. "Mrs. Hoolihan" as she was known to hundreds of students, was a devoted teacher at Sabal Palm Elementary School in North Miami Beach for 35 years before her retirement in 1996. Her passion for travel took her all over the world. Kathryn was a proud member of the "Daughters of the American Revolution" and "United Daughters of the Confederacy". Her love of geneaology led her to write a book about her family and their colorful lineage, which she completed just weeks ago. She is survived by her son, Bill; daughter-in-law, Kelly and grandson Jack; sister, Lucy (Christian) Johnson; sister, Martha (Lawrence) Hand; sister-in-law, Barbara Rand; nephews, David (Jeanine) Briggs, Charles and Jones Hand, and niece, Debbie (Daniel) Markley. A celebration of Kathryn's life will be held Tuesday, June 24, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Spanish Monastery, 16711 W. Dixie Highway, North Miami Beach. Dearest Billy and Kelly,
I was shocked to hear about your Moms' Passing.
We went on vacation and just came back when someone told us.
Dearest Billy, I don't know if you remember me,I used to teach with your Mom in '59 & 60 and we continued our friendship. You were always her shining light and even though her eyes always sparkled when
Kathy spoke of you they glowed.
Your Mom recently was so overjoyed about Kelly being on National TV .
When we were youger we did our hair together plus many other things and as we got older we shared many things together. Her major stories about Billy and in the recent years with her Grandson & Kelly.
Your Moms'wide range of talent from art to the family history was always done with vigor and talent. I can see her now with all her charm and grace and her laughter telling me aboutyou, her daughter-in-law and her grandson.
WE WENT BACK MANY YEARS BUT EVERY TIME WE MET IT WAS LIKE YESTERDAY.
BILLY, YOU WERE YOUR MOMS' SOURCE OF PRIDE AND SO WAS KELLY AND YOUR SON. KEEP IT UP FOREVER BECAUSE I KNOW SHE'S THERE WATCHING .I LOVE
YOU BILLY.PHYLLIS & SIDNEY SANDOW

Bill, Kelly & Jack -
Art and I are sorry we could not be with you all for Kitten's Memorial service. She was a special, long-time, very close friend of our family and we loved her and will miss her a lot. I still have my Christening dress she made, it is framed and hanging in my old bedroom.
With love and sympathy,

Dear Billy,

I just heard the news of the passing of your mother. On behalf of all the Kosoys I want to offer our deepest sympathy for your loss. It seems like yesterday those great memories of Sabal Palm, JFK and NMB. I remember cub scouts, sleepovers (even when you lived in the apartment)and the plays at Sabal Palm that your mom and Mrs. Mendelow worked so hard on. You were a great Captain Hook! As much as I wanted her as a teacher, it was easier having someone else since we were such good friends. Your mom was a wonderful woman and will be missed by all.

What is loved remains in the heart...and that is where Kathy will be for all of us in the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Souhtern Dames of America. Her smile, love of her family and the light of her life, Jack, are only a small part of what made her so special. She will truly be missed. My deepest sympathy.

Many, many people will miss Kathy

Hoolihan. Warmth and friendliness

radiated from her and she was a fine

human being. We regret that our

children never had her for a teacher.

Dear Bill and Kelly,

Kathy was a very special person, and a dear friend. We worked together in Golden Anchor Chapter, DAR. She was so creative, and organized and efficient, she put the rest of us to shame. Even under pressure she could create something from nothing and whatever she did was always "first class". That's the word. She was a classy lady, freely giving her time and skills to help others. She definitely fit a lot of living into her 70 years, but it was still not enough time for those who loved her. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Jack.

Kathy's passing has left a void in many lives. Our days together at Sabal Palm were a wonderful experience that has lasted for many

years. We had fun-filled days planning activities for our students. Nothing was ever a problem for her if friends were in-

volved. She was truly one of a kind

and John and I will miss her.

God has called home a beautiful angel and we know that he only chooses the BEST.

Our prayers and love to the family.

I had the privilege of getting to know Kathy through her kind efforts to help me with my family research to become eligible to join the United Daughters of The Confederacy, for which she was a past president. She was a genuinely kind person and always helpful. I regret that it has been several months since I have spoken with her, although I am grateful we did exchange e-mails in the past couple months. My heart and prayers go out to her family...Kathy will surely be missed.

I have very fond memories of Mrs. Hoolihan and our second grade class in 1962-1963. She created a warm environment where every child felt welcome and accepted. Little did she know how much she meant to all of us as she instilled a lifetime love of learning. Teachers like Mrs. Hoolihan shape and mold the future.

Bob Horland

June 22, 2003

I was saddened this morning to read about the passing of Mrs. Hoolahan who was my second grade teacher in 1961. In my 12 years of public education, she was the finest teacher I had. When I think about Mrs. Hoolahan, I fondly recall my wonderful years growing up in NMB.
