Busby Babes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 29 to Feb. 12, 2008.
They were the pioneering team who captured the hearts of a nation.

The Busby Babes had ripped up the post-War formula for soccer success.

Instead of a side packed with ageing pros, Matt Busby had put faith in the youth policy he had nurtured at Old Trafford and promoted players to senior roles.

Busby's vision and his Babes' burgeoning talent signalled a new blueprint that took on the established old boys in the First Division.

The new-look Reds swept to glory with the 1956 and 57 league titles going their way. Busby wanted his United boys to savour experiences abroad and ultimately confront the all-star Real Madrid team in the embryonic European Cup. The Babes against the Bernabeu boys was a mouth-watering prospect for everyone.

But tragically at Munich on February 6, 1958 that dream turned into an horrific nightmare as a generation of golden talent was wiped out and the Flowers of Manchester were no more.

Having played Red Star Belgrade, the Busby Babes and entourage stopped in Munich for refuelling and the terrible plane crash occurred.

Eight players perished: Roger Byrne, Geoff Bent, Mark Jones, Davdi Pegg, Billy Whelan, Eddie Colman, Tommy Taylor and Duncan Edwards. Edwards died 15 days after the crash.

Walter Crickmer (Club secretary), Tom Curry (first team trainer) and Bert Whalley (coach) died from the United staff.

Eight journalists were among the dead: Tom Jackson (Manchester Evening News), Alf Clarke (Manchester Evening Chronicle), Don Davies (Manchester Guardian), George Follows (Daily Herald), Archie Ledbrooke (Daily Mirror), Henry Rose (Daily Express), Eric Thompson (Daily Mail) and former City player Frank Swift (News of the World).

Captain Kenneth "Ken" Rayment, a British co-pilot who suffered multiple injuries in the crash and died three weeks later as a result of brain damage, steward Tom Cable, travel agent Bela Miklos and supporter Willie Satinoff also died.

I was 11 years old at the time and live in Gosport near Portsmouth you could help but feel the pain of such a tragic event. I have seen Duncan Edwards grave but we all missed out on what that team could have achieved.

I used to go past Old Trafford every day as a kid and the clock is etched into my mind.
If we believe in destiny and fate, then maybe, just maybe, The Munich Disaster was the catalyst in the building of the greatness and romance that has followed. It is their sacrifice that created the mystique of the club.

I don't know who wrote this but I think it was this poem.

Manchester united the Mat Busby Babes
When returning in Triumph from their match in Belgrade
When fate took a hand no one knows why their airplane crashed
And 8 were to die.
So let’s bow down our heads and pray for those brave lads who no more will play.

I am a city fan but remember how I cried when this terrible tragedy happened.

I was nine years old and living in Ocean Falls BC Canada when I heard the news; my Dad got a phone call from his pal, also living in Ocean Falls and I remember my Dad saying "Oh good God no!!' My Dad, was a City fan but was devastated by the news. You all left a legacy to be proud of. I was taken to Old Trafford in May of 1967 by a boy I was seeing and I will never forget it.

As a 14years old Schoolboy my Friend Tony Atkins and myself attended Manchester Airport as we were aware that The Busby Babes were returning from one of the early European games, well we got the whole teams Autographs and we were really pleased, the players were really good with us and we had a good conversation with them,we were you could say over the moon, that team was one that i beleive would have won everything before them if they had been given the chance and in those days they mixed with the fans unlike to-day.

I still have the Autographs and would not part with them.

I don't know what to write, as words are fickle at times like these, instead, I wrote a poem that we could all use:

The Busby Babes made all of us smile,
We dreamed to do what they did,
Their time with us was short,
But filled us all with pride.

Fifty years on,
We still see their faces,
Etched in the stones in fields,
Their faces still warm our hearts.

Let us not forget these men,
Footballers, journalists and staff,
They bring us together now,
As we remember them.

Don't shed a tear,
For a life that they lost,
But wear a smile,
For the lives that they lived.

I was 12 when Munich happened, lived, ate, drank, slept, dreamed, in fact- football daft. A great team in the true sense of the word "great". Remember the news coming through when I was at school. We were stunned.
50 years seems so long ago and yet as you grow older it only seems like yesterday.

A Sad day that will always be remembered way after we have all left this earth.... a memory sad I know, but one that my son and hopefully his children and so on, will remember with pride and pass on, "quite simply the best" lost their lives that day, all our thoughts this day and forever will be with the Busby Babes and the others who lost their lives that day.

I WAS BORN FOUR YEARS AFTER THAT TERRIBLE DAY. MY DAD, MAM AND SISTERS WOULD TELL ME HOW MEN WERE CRYING IN THE STREET, NOT BELIEVING THE TERRIBLE NEWS THAT SO MANY YOUNG PEOPLE HAD BEEN KILLED. GROWING UP IN NEWTON HEATH WHERE MAN UNITED ORIGINATED MADE ME FEEL EXTRA SPECIAL TO BE A UNITED FAN, MY FOUR SONS AND DAUGHTER HAVE CARRIED ON BEING UNITED FANS, BUT YOUNG OR OLD HAVING LIVED THROUGH IT OR JUST RELIVING OTHERS MEMORIES ALWAYS MAKES TODAY A SAD DAY. MY THOUGHTS GO TO THE RELATIVES OF ALL 23 WHO WERE SNATCHED AWAY THAT DAY, WHO WERE SIMPLY DOING WHAT THEY DID BEST.

Their loss of life galvanized a
City and the world of football.
I was a six year old when my Dad
told me I'd lost my football team.
I cried, then went onto become a regular at OT in the Stretford End,
now an old man at 55, but still lacing up the boots on the weekend,
my mind has never left that fatefull day, those players, that
gift of football they gave us.
Rest in peace.

I was with the referee at Bournemouth for the 6th round of the F.A.cup the year before the crash and Duncan Edwards got booked ,he came to the referees room after the game and said he was sorry for what he had said .Frank Coultas asked him in and had a chat and he then left and shook hands with us all.I think he was the best player ever to pull on any shirt.I was also at the Cup Final in 57 and had a bal autographed by both sidesit is now in the Man.Unt. museum.I have a scrapbook of the game ,programme and ticket stub (ticket was25 shillings and programme 1 shilling. I will never forget that superb team .God Bless. Alan Glaholm HULL.

I was nearly 11 and I was told the news by a friend's mother, on my way home from school. I couldn't believe it, until I got home and my mother said that the news of the crash had been on the radio. The Babes were my big heroes and Duncan was the biggest of all.
I remember thousands of heartbroken people, including City fans, lining Princess Parkway when the coffins came home from the airport. They were incomparable and if Duncan Edwards was playing today, he would walk into any team in the world.

February 6th 1958,
A date we'd come to love to hate.
Why did it happen?, why was it so?
beaten Belgrade but beaten by snow.

A tragedy had happened.
No-one could've imagined.
The Busby Babes all in their prime.
If only we could see them, one more time.

50 years have passed, and not a day goes by
without a lump in the throat, or a tear in the eye.
I was born 20 years after,
Doesn't make me any less sadder.

Those Busby Babes were taken away,
Others lived on to play another day.
Sir Matt himself was 50/50
We'll never forget, they've gone down in history.

I would like to pay my tribute to this incredible team which have been able to give us with their lives but also with their death.
A lot of our history and pride have been build up around them.

The Busby Babes will never be forgotten.

Frank Gannon

February 6, 2008

As a football mad 9 year old in 1958 and living in Manchester, United were my team and the players my heros. I can remember that day in February 1958 as if it were yesterday. The lad who lived next door cycled to meet me coming out of school to tell me the news and I ran all the way home to stand in front of the TV all night waiting for the news.

As the news came in over the next days and weeks, I kept a scrap book of articles and pictures from the Evening News. I was devastated when Duncan died two weeks later. The scrap book has long since disappeared but I still have the original of a poem that I have kept for the last 50 years. I came across it recently and reproduce it below. I can't remember where it came from or who wrote it, but it still brings a lump to my throat.

TO THEM

Pause for a while and a tale I'll relate,
Of a team that we justly had cause to call great,
A long while may lapse ere we see such a team,
For Busby just skimmed all the top from the cream.

In England and Europe, yes World football too,
These youngsters knew just precisely what to do,
No bragging or boasting just on with the game,
The best and the rest will remember their name.

Remember them well and honour them too,
Reflect on the glory they brought home to you,
Byrne, Jones and Coleman, Taylor, Pegg, Whelan, Bent,
How could they all that their lives had been spent.

Cickmer, Curry and Whalley the gent,
Who'd work day and night a defeat to prevent,
Can you forget them, well brother just try,
And wipe away the tear from your eye.

The good Lord above must have made a Decree,
I need you in Heaven for eternity,
And somewhere above they'd watch as they say,
United we were and United we stay.

No matter for what the future may hold,
Your exploits are legion, United the Bold,
The World shall remember as each of us do,
The greatest team ever, was the team that was you.

And someday perhaps, on the Old Trafford ground,
If we listen with care we may hear a sound,
As up in the clouds, with pride you look down,
And see the Babes wearing your own Triple Crown.

Alas, at the time of going to press,
We hear Duncan Edwards has gone to his rest,
But never mind Dunc, in the Heavenly League,
You'll win all the honours the rest have achieved.

I remember as a kid of one match where ManUtd won 8-1. It was something unbelievable! At that time, I did play football but had never heard of any Football Team scoring so many goals...
That's where I realised Manchester United is "Special"...

Later on, I did heard about the performance of them in the past following by the accident in Munich... What a sad day for the Sport!

Now, regarding the evolution of ManUtd since (Exceptional), it makes me say that "The Busby Babes" had never been forgotten and that they never really left OLD TRAFFORD... I also think their spirit is still present and, in my opinion, it's one of the reason of the new player's success!

The OLD TRAFFORD after all is not the Theater of Dreams for nothing!!!
