Harvey Burger Obituary

Harvey Burger 1932-2007 SPRINGFIELD - Harvey Burger, 74, of 55 Loretta St., died Tuesday at Mercy Medical Center. He worked at the New England Tel & Tel Phone Co. for 5 years, at Mass. Mutual for 4 years, and was a clerk at the post office for 31 years. He helped organize chess tournaments for over forty years. He was a member and past president of both the Springfield Chess Club and the Western Mass. Chess Club. He was also a member and past president of the Independent City of Homes Assn. He is survived by his son Richard Burger of Springfield and his daughter Denise Deal of Miami, FL. A graveside service will be Friday 2:00 PM at City of Homes Cemetery. The Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home is in charge.

On behalf of the Massachusetts Chess Association (MACA), I express condolences to the son and daughter of Harvey J. Burger on the death of their father. As a former member of the MACA board of directors, Harvey was an active supporter of chess in western Massachusetts for more than 40 years. He helped organized many tournaments here, among them the very popular AIC Opens in Springfield. He will be sorely missed by chessplayers throughout the state for his dedication to the royal game, to which he devoted much of his life.

Harvery was a dear fiend of mine. i will miss him alot.i use to work at wingate in the kitchen.and i would talk to harvey every day. he was always cheerful.and could make you smile.we use to talk about our children.and i know how much he loved you richard and denise. my deepest condolences are with you as you grieve.you both are in my thought and prayers god bless you both.

Dear Richard and Family,
I am so deeply saddened to learn of the loss of your Dad. Such a nice man, always with a big smile when I saw him. Richard you were such a devoted son and I know how proud your Dad was of you. When my mother, Dina, passed last year it was so sudden and I know the shock you are feeling right now. I will miss your Dad always. With the difficult days ahead of you, know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Harvey was a wonderful person with a "Grand Spirit." He was my father's roommate at the nursing home and a good friend to him as well. I will miss him. To the family, "thank you" for sharing your Dad with our family.
