Walter Hall Obituary
1923 - 2021
Resident of Saratoga
CDR Walter Dickinson Hall, USN (ret.), has died, 97 years strong, peacefully at his home in Saratoga on March 15, 2021. Prior to his death, he lost his loving wife of 69years, Bobbie Jean Matthias Hall and his granddaughter, Kristi Johnson. Walt is survived by his 4 children, Marty Hall Todd, of Walnut Creek, Bill Hall of Lake Bluff, Illinois, Connie Hall of San Jose, and Terry Hall of Santa Cruz. He is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Derek Johnson, Laura Todd Andron, Matt Todd, Nate Hall, Katrina Hall, Ben Bloch, and 7 great grandchildren.
Walt was born in 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio to Hester and Walter Hall. Walt attended high school in Iowa City, Iowa. He received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, where he graduated in 1945 (Class of '46). Walt went on to attend the Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA and received a MS degree in Physics. Walt had a 22 year career in the U.S. Navy where he served in the Pacific campaign at the end of WW II, and during the Korean and Viet Nam Wars. He retired as a Commander in 1967. During Walt's second career, he worked as a Systems Engineer on military defense systems for Lockheed Missiles and Space, retiring after 17 years.
Walt and his devoted wife, Jean, both enjoyed traveling and spending weekends in San Francisco, where they had met and fell in love for life. Walt had fun fixing anything broken, playing poker, golf, following sports and socializing with his military and Lockheed friends. Setting everything else aside, Walt valued the nightly dinner hour as dedicated time with those he loved above all else, his family. Courage, loyalty, integrity, honor and service to country, family and friends defined CDR Walter D. Hall, 97 years strong.

I met Walt in his later years through the Saint Andrew's community and Walt's daughters. I continue to be amazed by his life story. I remember Walt as a great conversationalist with a quick wit.
