I met Juan in College back in Texas. We both went on a mission trip to Juarez Mexico to help build homes for the community. He was awesome and until this day the most genuine person I have ever met. I still have the letters (yes we had to stay in touch like that back in the day) we wrote to each other. He adored his nieces and nephews. I still miss him greatly.

To all of Juan's family and friends, I was neighbors with Juan and Mark in El Paso and became good friends with Juan at that time. He was such a cool, funny, smart, kind, lovable guy whose smile was as big as his heart. We shared an interest in books, movies, music, and sports. He taught me to be more open minded, and to love the San Jose Sharks, Frank Sinatra, and Shrimp on pizza. He always beat me at darts and trivia, and let me win at tennis, like the true gentleman he was. I am a Red Sox fan but he tried hard to convert me into a Giants fan, and we often argued about which was better the American League or the National League. He would have been so pumped about his Giants recent World Series wins after such a long dry spell. Sadly, I lost track of him when I moved back to Maine. I only recently learned of his passing, and I can't believe he has been gone for 10 years. While I was just one of many people who loved him dearly, he was integral to me becoming the person I am today. I wish that I had been a bigger part of his life, he was truly a unique and wonderful person, and I know how much he loved all of you for he spoke of you all often. I am so very sorry for your loss, the world seems diminished without him in it. I will cherish his memory forever. May God Bless and comfort you all. Juanito, my friend I will see you again for while death takes the body, and God takes the spirit, our mind holds the memories, and our heart holds the love, while our Faith tells us that we will meet again.

Dear Pena family, it's been almost 20 years since I spoke with Juan and was going through my boxes of memories and found pictures of out trip to Juarez Mexico in 1995. Then I found a post card from him when he moved back to Mountain View. I decided to try to reconnect with him and found that he passed. My heart is so heavy right now and I wish I would have kept in touch with him, his heart was one of the most genuine that I have ever met. I know it's been some time but my prayers are with you.

I'm sitting next to Juan in the photo.

Dearest Juan,
Today we should have celebrated your 41st birthday with you. Instead, we gathered to commemorate your life. In our large, tight-knit family, there are so many celebrations that are not complete without you. Today I would have teased you about how old you're getting..but I bet you still wouldn't have a single gray hair! And I know you'd give up beer for Lent, and we'd debate whether or not "barley wine" is considered a beer!
One of our favorite bands still rocks the house during their shows...but those concerts are always bittersweet without my concert buddy there to make fun of the "hippy dancers".
Raising my glass to toast a great brother on his birthday. You are greatly missed.
Peace,
Your big sis,
Lydia

Hi. I remember Juan. I went to Saint Francis for 2 years and the man was good, period, for sure. His way was to be light and not judge others whatsoever, and most importantly, he left every moment making the other person smile, no matter what was up. He was good people, a good man, as my wife and I say in Chile, "..Huevon mi amigo, no es por siempre!" -this, the worst word in our vocabulary (huevon) is the same word that we reserve only for the best people, but the "tone" of this expression is "eternal saludos" which only goes for the one who smiles in memory of "friend", but in a lifetime.

I can't believe it's been a year. I still have Juan's emails and his name is still in my IM address's I just can't bring myself to delete them. I only knew Juan a short time email buddies/phone buddies we were going to meet after St. Pat's so news of his tragic accident was really shocking to me. You really never know. Because of Juan, everyday I try to live life to the fullest. I tell my children and loved ones that I love them each and every day! I tell my friends to be aware on the roadways as they travel because you never know.
I pray for Juan's family to find peace.
Hugs to you all

February 19th is Juan's birthday, and this year is our first time celebrating without him.

Dearest Juan,
I miss you every day and think of our time together and cry. Celebrating your birthday was especially hard, but we got together and shared our memories of you. We made birthday cards and sent them via balloons up to heaven. My heart aches as I struggle to accept that you are really gone forever. And I thank God that I had so many great years being your big sister and your friend.

Love you and miss you,

Your sister,
