Andrew J. B. McFarland Obituary

Andrew J. B. McFarland
1926 ~2008
Carmel – Lt. Col. Andrew (Andy) J. B. McFarland (U.S. Army Retired) died on December 9, 2008, two weeks after the death of his spouse of 58 years, Bunty McFarland. Born in 1926, Andy was the only child of the late Susan and Major General A.J. McFarland. Andy was born in Manila, the Philippine Islands, while his father served as a staff officer for General Douglas McArthur. As a child, Andy moved among various military posts, ending with his father's last assignment to the Pentagon during World War II. He was a graduate of St. Albans School in Washington D.C. He earned a Bachelors of Science degree in 1950 from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. In 1962, Andy earned his Masters in History from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama.
Andy married the former Bunty Marigliano del Monte in 1950 as a freshly minted 2nd Lieutenant and began a whirlwind tour of postings that included Ft. Riley, Kansas; several postings in Germany; Ft. Benning, Georgia; Iceland; Lisbon, Portugal; the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington; and Ft. Ord, from which he deployed as a Battalion Commander to Vietnam. After his tour in Vietnam, he joined the Defense Language Institute in Monterey as a member of the faculty and staff. Andy retired from active duty in 1972 and he and Bunty settled in their home in Carmel. In addition, to his military career, Andy had scholarly pursuits ranging from Quantum Physics to Czarist Russia. His life long passion for horses led him to work with children as the Pony Club Commissioner at Pebble Beach during the 1970's and 80's. His progressive politics and support of many causes including a Palestinian homeland made for lively discussions in the McFarland home. As an athlete, he was a runner and a power lifter but he made his mark fencing for West Point and later in clubs throughout the world including the one he co-founded here on the Monterey Peninsula.
Andy is survived by his five daughters Caroline Moyer (David) of Moraga, Catherine McFarland of Montgomery Alabama, Alexandra McFarland of Palo Alto, Dorothea McFarland (James Collins) of Napa, Emily McFarland (Douglas Kelly) of San Francisco, a niece, Isabel Filiz (Ferda) of Sunnyvale and six grandchildren: Alexandra Moyer Readey (Gordon), Katharine Moyer and Nathaniel Kelly of San Francisco, Andrew, Margaret and Antonella Collins of Napa.
There will be a gravesite service at San Carlos Cemetery in Monterey for family and friends at 2:00 p.m. on December 18, 2008 and a reception following at Anton and Michel, Mission St & 7th Avenue in Carmel from 3:00 pm to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers or other donations, the family requests that you send your contribution in Andy's name to the Institute for Middle East Understanding, 2913 El Camino Real, Suite 436, Tustin, CA 92782.

Dear McFarland Family,
It was with sadness that I read of the passing of both Col. & Mrs. McFarland. I and my late parents, Len and Betsy were next door neighbors back in the Presidio days. I fondly recall your family and would often see Bunty around the area or at gatherings with mutual friends. They were very nice kind people and I'm saddened to know they both are now gone. Losing one's parents is such a difficult thing and to have both go within two weeks is unimaginable. I sent a card to the home address but it was returned today as undeliverable. So I wish to get a message to the family. My heart goes out to each member of the McFarland family. All my best, Michael Amodt

Dear McFarland Family,
I was so saddened to hear about the passing of both your mother and father in such a short period of time. I remember your father as being very strong in his opinions, very intelligent, and with a wonderful sense of humor. Since I was so young when I knew him, I didn't realize what an interesting life he had led--no wonder he could speak intelligently on any topic that came up.
Your mother was the salt of the earth. She, too, had a kind heart and a wonderful sense of humor. My parents always enjoyed the company of your parents. My thoughts are with all of you at this difficult time.
