MARCUS E. SANFORD, M.D.
AGE: 91 SOMERVILLE
Marcus E. Sanford, M.D., 91, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009. Dr. Sanford was born in Manasquan, NJ and was a lifelong resident of Somerville. Dr. Sanford graduated from the Somerville Public Schools, Yale College and Yale Medical School. During World War II he served in the Army medical Corps as Captain. Dr. Sanford was a prominent Physician in Somerville for over 45 years retiring in 1991. He joined Somerset Hospital in 1947 and remained on the staff until his retirement. He was president of the hospital Medical Staff and served on the Board of Trustees for many years. He also was President of the Somerset County Medical Society. He was founder of the Methadone Clinic for drug addicts. He was also President of the Somerset Valley YMCA and the local chapter of the American Heart Association and member of the First United Methodist Church. Dr. Sanford enjoyed summer vacations with his family at Lake Shehawken which was his parents original homestead.
He is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Mildred who died in 2004 and a daughter, Margaret Sanford in 1987. Surviving are his three sons, Dr. Robert and his spouse Catherine and three grandsons, Marcus, Dwight, and Todd, Richard and his spouse Jennifer Steele, and Paul and his spouse Sasha.
Services will be 6pm Tuesday at the Bruce C. VanArsdale Funeral Home, 111 N. Gaston Ave. Somerville 908-725-3111.Visitation will be 4-6pm Tuesday followed by a service at the funeral home. A memorial service and burial will be held 11am September 12, 2009 at Lake Shehawken Methodist Church in Starrucca, PA.
