Hunter, 28, will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Main Street Church of Christ in Lockney with Jay Don Poindexter and Jerry Klien officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colo. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Lockney. Hunter, who was stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008, at his childhood home in Lockney. He was born Oct. 3, 1979, in Plainview. Hunter married Rayanne Weese on July 26, 2004, in a mountain-top ceremony in Colorado. The couple has two young children, a son, Westlin, 3, and a daughter, Tavie, 22 months. Hunter joined the U.S. Army in 1998 and served three years with the 1/509 Infantry (Airborne) before joining the Colorado National Guard. He returned to active duty in 2004 and was assigned to the 1/71 Cavalry, 10th Mountain Division. He served a tour of duty in Iraq beginning in 2005 and ending Feb. 26, 2006, when he was badly injured during an attack. He was subsequently awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. An artist all of his life, Hunter was a 1998 graduate of Lockney High School and attended the Art Institute of Colorado in Denver. He was a member of the Church of Christ and an Eagle Scout. Hunter is survived by his wife and children; parents, Bill and Kathy Hunter of Lockney; a sister, Mandy Hunter of Lockney; a brother, Jeff Hunter of Nashville, Tenn.; and a niece, Anna Hernandez of Lockney. The family requests memorials be sent to Main Street Church of Christ Missions Fund, Box 596, Lockney, TX 79241, or to the Wounded Warrior Project, www.woundedwarriorproject.org

I should like to remind you of the thousands of citizens who, unbidden, gathered together on street corners and along highways and byways all over the city of Denver, waving flags and showing our solidarity and community in the weeks following the attacks of September 11.

Allow me to suggest that, in their hearts, every one of those good folks who stood on the flag lines then, also stands the flag line in spirit to salute Wesley, and you, his family, today.

We who stand on the flag lines of the Patriot Guard do so because we wish to express our gratitude for the sacrifice Wesley has given, and the sacrifice you have also given. ***We know where our freedom comes from.*** Each of us who stands on that flag line knows and represents, a hundred, maybe a thousand others here in our community who would stand there with you if they could, and who do so in their hearts.

We wish you well.

It was my privilage to meet Westly at a boyscout function with my sons. He spoke about his time in Iraq and answered all kinds of questions for the boys. He handled even their difficult questions well. I will not forget that time.

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. Our deepest condolences are with you as you grieve. Wesley will be greatly missed, but we are comforted by knowing that he is in Heaven and that his pain is gone. Wesley was very brave and courageous to help protect all of us and our Country. He was a Hero to our Country and to all of us who knew him. We are very proud that he was a part of our Family. We will miss our nephew and cousin, but he will be greeted with open arms by his Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles. God Bless our family, RayAnne, Westlin, Tavi, Billy, Kathy, Mandy and Jeffrey.
