Earl Eubanks Obituary

April 27, 1938 - February 17, 2008

AUGUSTA, Ga. | Lt. Col. Earl W. Eubanks Jr., U.S. Army, retired, 69, entered into rest Sunday, February 17, 2008 at the Augusta Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was born in Savannah, Georgia, April 27, 1938, and he grew up in Green Sea, S.C. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1960 and received a master's degree in Journalism from the University of South Carolina in1972.

Lt. Col. Eubanks served as an Infantry Officer and as a Public Relations Officer. As an Infantry Officer he served with the prestigious Green Berets and with the Rangers. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, a tour in Germany and a tour in Panama. As a Public Relations Officer he taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy, served as aide to General Omar Bradley, and his last assignment was as editor of a U.S. Army magazine at the Pentagon. During his military career, Lt. Col. Eubanks distinguished himself by acts of heroism, extraordinary achievements and meritorious service. He received numerous awards and decorations including Legion of Merit Medal, Bronze Star with ''V'' for Valor Medal, Purple Heart Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Commendation Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Service Star Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Honor Medal First Class with ten clusters.

He is remembered for his love of reading, his wit, his writing of humorous columns for S.C. Lowcountry publications, and as a noted Civil War Historian. An avid art collector, he amassed an extensive collection of American, European, Panamanian, Asian, and African art.

Survivors include his wife, Lucette Ducret Eubanks, M.D., of Villege Juif, France; and his sister, Sara E. Quinto of Green Sea.

He was preceded in death by his father, Earl W. Eubanks Sr.; his mother, Bertis Everett Eubanks Floyd; and his step-father, W. Fulton Floyd.

Interment will be11 a.m. March 18, 2008 in Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. All friends and family are invited to attend. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Association or a favorite charity. The family can be contacted for more information at (843) 995-1975.

I have such fond memories of our school days together at Green Sea High. Earl was a brilliant scholar,and I enjoyed serving on various committees with him.

Mrs. Eubanks and Sara...my heartfelt sympathy to you in the passing of Earl. Was schooled with him at Green Sea until he went on to higher learning and left the area. I and our classmates will miss him as well as others that knew him. May he rest in a better place and may you have the blessing and confort of our Lord in your healing.
