I was fortunate enough to attend the Oceanside
Pier service held by his family. Many of us from that era wish to have the same tribute when we pass. I know I do. it was really touching. I got to visit and meet many of his family at the reception. Eleven years ago and it seems like yesterday

I never met Johnny but was always told about his accomplishments in surfing by my dad Pete Perez and Uncle Ernie Perez who were his cousins. As a Oceanside surfer myself I always felt it was my duty to be the best I can be to represent my family and their great accomplishment's in life. When I was a kid I use to take an old 8 footer board from My Aunt Gerties house in Oceanside with the name La jolla surfboards and surf leashless with a single skeg at tyson street park and South O pier. I could only aspire to match the greatness that Chubby was.

I'll always remember Chubby from a trip to Florida. There wasn't much surf, but we all had fun. He was a great guy.

I really got to know Chubby as a freshman at OHS, he always had a smile and treated everyone with respect. I truly admired him, and my heart goes out to the family and many friends he leaves behind. I have a photo of the Oceanside Pier and will be looking at it and saying my prayers during the memorial. OHS ASB president Class of '66.

"CHUBBY" WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS THE SADNESS IN MY HEART". You were a "Great Little Brother", a "Great Surfer" and always strived to be the best. "AND YOU WERE". You moved miles away from me, yet you always made an effort to come see me in California. They say to always say what is in your heart before it's too late, how true that is. I should have expressed to you what your visits meant to me, and to tell you that I loved you, but somehow I think you knew. "Little Brother, I love and miss you". May you rest in peace.

If I close my eyes I can see him sitting in the Lifeguard tower on Wisconsin Street. It had no roof as I recall. I last saw him at Buddy Todd Park about 30-years ago. I was a little kid at the time, but the guy treated me like one of the guys.

Chubby*****RIP*****
I loved my cousin Chubby. My brother Babe and I would come over to visit in Oceanside, from Imperial Valley, we all go to the beach,as you all know Chubby was a great surfer in Oceanside, back in the days of the 60's and 70"s and the Stone's playing "I can't get no satisfaction"
We would go in this woody car, with all his friends, and their surf boards.
Those were the "Happy Days for Us"
