Clayton Bower Obituary

Clayton F. Bower, Jr. 02/21/1950~ 09/13/2010 ESCONDIDO -- Clayton proudly graduated Natick Senior High School and Boston University, attended St. John's Seminary and Harvard, always striving to expand his knowledge. He amassed his own research library becoming an inspired lecturer allowing him to touch many people from many, many places. The library of 17,000 books was donated to John Paul The Great Catholic University. He was an Information Technology Consultant at California State University San Marcos for more than 13 years whose campus he was enamored by. Teaching at Palomar College across the way was a source of joy as well. His activities were diverse. His love of Rugby playing at BC continued as he joined a team in San Diego. An excellent instructor and coach of Jui-jitsu and Grappling, his students described his ability as "We were rag dolls when we began...later no one could hold us down." Extremely proud of his MacLeod heritage, he participated in the games and activities and demonstrated how beautiful a Scotsman could play a bagpipe. Clayton was given a Relic of St. Bernadette more than 30 years ago by a friend at the Seminary and since, began rescuing Reliquary, more than fifty. He put most in the safe hands of St. Mary's Escondido. Fernando Murillo described Clayton saying, "He worked very hard in radio in spreading the Gospel on EWTN network and St. Joseph Radio in the US and across the world. He dedicated himself very much in educating the poorest of souls across our great country." Clayton is survived by his parents, Clayton and Rena Bower; sisters, Alexandra, Marjorie and Margaret; brothers, Robert and John; and nieces, Rena and Chloe. A Vigil Rosary will be held at 7p.m., Thursday, September 16, at Alhiser- Comer Mortuary, 255 S. Broadway Ave. Escondido, Calif. 92025. The moment that Clay joined our Old Gold Rugby team his character stood out. He was the most genuine and caring human being that I ever met. My recent conversation with him reinforced what a special person he was. I called to console him and I walked away as the benefactor of the conversation.
I now know that we all have someone watching over us.

I grew up with Clayton. In the fourth grade, he sat in back of me and left a strong impression. I remember that he was a serious student and always wore a crisp white shirt. We weren't close in high school, but in the late 1980s, I started working at a technology company in Lexington, and as I drove up to the place on my first day, I heard a bagpipe playing in the distance. You can imagine how amazed I was to find out it was Clayton Bower, my childhood friend, working in the same company. He visited my home in Somerville and--after telling us about all his hobbies, including beekeeping--proceeded to trim our wisteria. He was bright and curious in so many ways! My mother was warden at the polls at Wilson middle school for many years. After every local election, she would call to tell me that Clayton sent his best regards. She was so impressed by him. I can't tell you how sad I am to hear of his passing. He is unforgettable. Sincerely, Emily Barkin

I remember Clayton very well from Natick High. Even though we only spoke on occasion, he left a strong impression of sincerity and kindness. He struck me as very intelligent, gentle, and sensitive to others in a way not yet attained by many guys at that age. It is no surprise to read of the many ways he reached out to others in his life.

I will think of Clayton every time I hear bagpipes. I will always remember finishing up rugby practice and then hearing Clayton's bagpipes and the echo around the Boston College campus. RIP

I remember meeting Clayton for the first time as a new employee at Cal State San Marcos, he was helping me with Excel. I thought he was funny as well as professional, I was trying to make light of the training since I was having a difficult time but he was gracious, patient and I thought he was a very nice man.
