George Hillam Obituary

George D. Hillam OCEANSIDE -- George D. Hillam, born March 24, 1918 in Hemet, Calif., died on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in New York. He was raised as a youth in Oceanside and graduated from Oceanside High School in 1935. He was a well known grocer who bought his first store in 1938. He aptly named it South Hill Market and later changed the name to Food Mart when the location was changed to Oceanside Blvd. He became famous for his innovative sales strategies. He also did catering on the side with his son. While President of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, he promoted a fish derby that later proved to be a great asset to the local sportfishing businesses. George is survived by his son, George, Jr.; and a stepson, Richard Difiglia in New York who cared for him during his long illness. He also is survived by his sisters, Mildred (Mickey) Stolzoff and Hazel Gibson of Oceanside; and a brother, David Hillam of Carlsbad. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com

Growing up, the Hillams' South Hill Street Market was a few blocks from our house and we shopped there regularly. My parents usually just called it "George's." George used to give me dimes from the cash register to ride on the mechanical horse he always had out front. I remember the penny candy store George opened next door to the market for awhile. We moved to South Oceanside about the same time as the market did and continued to shop there for many years. I have fond memories of George, Sr., George, Jr. and Dave. Oceanside has truly lost a piece of her history. My sicerest dondolences to the family.

George Hillam Sr was a friend of my father and mother - Refugio and Juanita Rochin (both deceased). My father admired George's business and leadership in Oceanside. I went to Army & Navy Academy with George Jr and got to work with David Hillam who managed my father's grocery store in Carlsbad - the Apex Family Market. That store is gone - replaced by hotel on Carlsbad Blvd.

I am sorry for your loss and know that George D. Hillam was a fine man and friend of many.

our condolences. I remember going to your market as a young girl with my mother. I worked there many years later as a cashier after my husband passed. I have fond memories and has never been the same as it was when it was "Hillams". another piece of "Oceanside history" has passed, as well as a man who made part of it.
cherish the memories.

It was a pleasure knowing George and doing business with him over many years. George was innovative, creative and honest. A credit to the Oceanside business community.

Although it's difficult today to see beyond the sorrow,
May looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.
my prayers are with you.

I remember in the mid 1950's helping Tony Pope and a couple others move some display cases from Hill Street to what was then called Short Street. After all these years, when passing by the market, someone still makes the comment "Remember, that's the old HIllam's Market. Bob Stauss Carlsbad
