Robert Whiting Obituary

Robert C. Whiting ESCONDIDO -- Principal and long-time community service volunteer, Robert C. Whiting, passed away Monday, October 25, 2010. Born in Los Angeles on April 16, 1927, Bob grew up in the Pasadena area and served in the Navy during WWII as a Navy corpsman. He received his teaching credential and Masters in Education at USC. He began teaching in Temple City where he became principal of Longdon Elementary. Shortly after moving to Escondido in 1963, he began his 22 year career as principal at three grade schools - Central, Rose and Lincoln. Bob loved education and his students. He also understood the importance of having counseling services for troubled students and their families. This led Bob to a 42 year involvement with Palomar Family Counseling Services. He joined the board and served several terms as president and as chairman of various committees. In addition, Bob has been a member of Escondido Kiwanis Club for 46 years, and served as president in 1971. He also volunteered for Senior Gleaners for 12 years, collecting food for various charities. "I felt the community has rewarded me very well. The only way I could help give back was to get involved," Bob said in an interview with NCTimes in 2006. A Civil War buff, Bob once took a 9,000 mile trip to visit historical civil war battlefields. This interest also led him be one of the founders of the Civil War Round Table in San Diego. Camping and sailing were favorite activities Bob shared with his kids as they grew up. After retirement, he continued to volunteer. He was active in his church and enjoyed many family vacations highlighted by a trip to Scotland in 1998, a road trip to Yosemite, Sequoia National Park, Death Valley in 2009 and many trips to his favorite fishing hole on Rock Creek in Montana. Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie, who also shares his passion for service to others; son, Andrew of Escondido; daughter, Kathleen McBride (John) of Butte, Mont.; son, Steve (Nancy) Whiting of Poway; son, Daniel (Aida) Whiting of Achiles, Va.; and son, Douglas (Kerie) Whiting of Tacoma, Wash. Bob and Marie also have six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held on Saturday, October 30 at 11 am, at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Way, Escondido. For those whose lives have been touched by Bob's life, please come and share in the celebration with us. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Escondido Kiwanis Club College Scholarship Fund or Palomar Family Counseling Services. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com

Bob Whiting

Bob will be missed by the Board of Directors and Staff of Palomar Family Counseling Service, Inc. (PFCS).

To list Bob’s involvement with Palomar Family Counseling Service, Inc. doesn’t begin to convey the extent and depth of his commitment to community service and the well being of the families and children.

For over forty years Bob served in turn as a Board Member, Board President, Treasurer, Facility Committee Chair, supporter and active member of multiple committees that include, building expansion, capital fund drive, and reorganization to name a few.

Service for Bob meant attendance at every Board meeting for over forty years and supportive activities wherever there was a need.

He represented the very finest in volunteer service, selfless, unassuming, and working for the good of the other. He understood the issues and the needs of children and families and that individual effort could make a difference. His was a family tradition of leadership in service.

Our thoughts are with his family and the loss they, Palomar Family Counseling Service, Inc., and this community share.
