Eric Longden Obituary

Eric John Longden 05/07/1943 ~ 11/08/2010 CARLSBAD -- Eric was born into the world of horse racing. His father, Hall of Fame Jockey, Johnny Longden, rode Count Fleet winning the Kentucky Derby and then the Triple Crown the week Eric was born. Eric's mother, Hazel, was the daughter of a trainer. Eric himself went on to be an accomplished trainer on the West Coast, twice training the Horse of the Year in Washington State. He bred, owned and trained many horses throughout his racing career. He met the love of his life, Sue (Piukkula), in 1975 at Longacres Racetrack in Seattle, Washington. They both loved animals and enjoyed to travel. Eric retired from the horse racing business in 1991 and he and Sue moved to Carlsbad, California where they were able to pursue their love of travel. Eric passed peacefully with his wife by his side. He had been diagnosed with A.L.S. (Lou Gehrig's disease) in September of 2009. He fought a courageous and dignified battle with this devastating disease. His final journey taught many of those who knew him to really 'embrace life and to remember it's not about surviving the storm, it's learning to dance in the rain.' Eric leaves behind his wife, Sue; sister, Andrea; many brother and sisters-in-law; as well as nieces and nephews. True to his character, he requested there be no services ~ he said to just remember him at a beautiful sunset and celebrate life. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com

Eric, sorry to see that you're gone already, I have memories of us growing up together in Arcadia. Sad day, sad loss.

Sue, I just learned of Eric's passing. You can tell, from the 10 year delay, we drifted apart following high school. In HS we were fairly close, but drifted since then.

I just heard about Erica passing. I am so sorry. My husband and I owned horses at Long Acres. We were thinking about what ever happened to Eric, and Lisa Baze text me and told me. I just want to say he was a super nice guy! God Bless Sue!

Last time I saw Eric was at Bully's in La Jolla. He was bartending and I was just out of college being a typical bar fly and hanging out with my friends. He always had a big smile and jokes to share. I will always remember his humor and kindness. Here's to you Eric! Sharon (Morrison)Davis

Eric and I met in the 7th grad, we were high jumping together, he introduced me to back roll they now use. Coach Wells wanted us to do the Western roll. So many great memories. The winning circle at Santa Anita and Hollywood park. He was a winner, in character and personality. May god love and spread that love to his family in heaven.

I was saddened to hear of Eric's passing. We were High School pals that continued on through his racing career. Will always remember him and his 315 tri-power Chevy betting Harvey Balch and his 335 4-speed in a very memorable drag race. Oh.....those were the days my friend.........we thought they would never end.......R.I.P. my friend....Don Rooten
