Jerry Sand Obituary

Remembering Jerry Sand VISTA -- Jerry Sand, a long time resident of Vista, passed away peacefully after a long brave battle over his ailing health surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, November 6th, 2010. Born on September 5th, 1932 in Willernie, Minn., he grew up on a farm which allowed him to hone his natural ability of fixing machines. Leaving home at a young age, he served in the U.S. Navy during both the Korean and Viet-Nam wars. He ended his stellar career after 26 years of service as a Senior Chief Petty Officer E-8 Gunner's Mate, which included a World Tour on the USS Midway in 1954-1955. After coming to Vista in 1969 with his bride Helen from the Philippines, he continued his service in San Diego for several years ending his naval career on the USS Lockwood. Within a year of retiring from the Navy, he became employed by NCTD, covering various routes in North County for over 20 years. Jerry enjoyed following the Padres and Chargers, he also treasured spending time with his family and made many friends during their years of camping. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing and gardening, especially tending to the many roses that he planted for his wife. Widely known for his wit and generosity, Jerry always took the time to put others needs before his. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Frank and Lila Sand. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Helen; and his son, Frank (Debbie, including three step-grandsons). His surviving family also includes his older sister, Betty Konsti; younger sister, Mary Ann Carr; and his cherished seven nieces and nephews. In honoring his long time wish, his family and close friends will hold a private Military Honors Ceremony before his interment at Ft. Rosecrans National Cemetery on Friday, January 7th, 2011 at 12 noon. His wife, son, family and friends will spend the rest of their lives treasuring the memories of this honorable man.
