Robert Carson Obituary

Robert William Carson, 89 OCEANSIDE -- Bob Carson passed away peacefully, with all five of his children at his side, on Friday, November 5, 2010. He was born in Farmington, Conn., on May 19, 1921, son of Christopher Carson and Evelyn Petts. After high school, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps., where he eventually achieved the rank of Major. He saw action in the Korean War and WWII, including Bougainville and Guadalcanal, and at one point, worked with General MacArthur. Additionally, he worked as a military photographer. While in Newport, R.I., Bob met Grace Dupont of Providence, R.I., whom he married, on November 30, 1944. They had five children, over a 19-year span. After an accomplished career, Major Carson retired from the military in 1965, when he and his family settled in Oceanside. He became a successful stockbroker, working at Crowell Weeden and Co., for many years, as well as being an active member of Rotary Club. In 1967, he and his family moved into the Henie Hills neighborhood. After 65 years of marriage, Grace passed away in January of 2010. Being forever young at heart, Bob's hobbies and avid interests well into his later years, included tennis, skiing, and especially cycling. One of the events Bob was most proud of, was cycling in the American Lung Association's six- week Transamerica Bike Trek, of which he was the oldest cyclist, at 68. He was an avid cyclist even into his early 80's. Bob, or "Duke," as he was lovingly called, is survived by his children: Linda Borst and her husband, George of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and their daughters, Kim, Renee, and Rachel; Cynthia Peeden and her husband, Robert of San Juan Capistrano, and their daughter, Kelley; Robert Carson and his wife Denise of Oceanside, and their children, Tyler and Amanda; Joan Case and her husband Chris of Pleasant Hill, Calif., and their daughters, Maya and Sierra; Caroline Carson of Oceanside, and her son David; great-grandsons Dylan and Cameron; and devoted nephew, Dale Brown of Connecticut. Duke was a devoted father who loved his children and family dearly. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, November 16, at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside. Graveside services to follow. Friends are welcome. Donations/ gifts: can include American Lung Assoc. Sign the Guest Book online obits.nctimes.com

You don't feel so very far away, but my sadness comes at knowing that I'll never be able to talk to you again, and joke with you again. I hope all of us will be together some day. You give me inspiration and strength. When I feel like things aren't worth while, I think of you biking across America, or fighting for our country, and remembering that your blood is my blood rejuvinates my will and spirit. Thank you. I love you.

Your Father was a wonderful and kind man. He was such a good friend to so many in our community. We will always fondly remember the skiing trips he sponsored that brought so many of us close together to become cherished friends. He will be dearly missed by so many. Please accept our deepest sympathy.

My sincere condolence for the loss of your father. Bob and I had desks next to each other for many years at Crowell Weedon and we both had careers in the USMC. Bob was a hard working, fun loving guy. I enjoyed his friendship for many years. He will be a loss to many of us.
