Incredible young man. Looks like he followed a path as I did. Vietnam and then 25 years with the NYPD. May he rest in peace. I think of my brothers who died in NAM every day. Knowing this, his service and sacrifice he will be included in my thoughts always. Truly a brother. RIP

Around this time 5 years ago. I received one of my weekly emails from CSM Rubenstein. In this email she thanked me for the supplies that I had sent, and the news of loosing as what she described as "One of her best soldiers". Over the next few day's I looked in the local news papers for the notice of the solider who was taken. I cut the article out of the paper and it has stayed in my car ever since.
You are missed every day Jimmy

Hello,

I found a memorial bracelet inscribed with "James McNaughton" on my way out of the Tropicana Hotel in Atlantic City, NJ late Friday afternoon. I knew it was important, and didn't want to risk leaving it with someone at the hotel, for fear that it would get thrown in a drawer and never remembered, or never brought to the missing items area. With little research, I discovered the information about this wonderful man who valiantly believed in himself and his country.

Please let me know how I can return the bracelet.

Thank you,
Kristy Horning

It is 4 years today, in these 4 years there isn't a day that went by that we haven't thought of Jimmy. Whether we laughed or we cried he has been here every step of the way for us. We as the proud parents of James can't thank everyone for all the kind words that have been said here. Each story that someone writes helps us through each day. We are so proud to have heard from different people all over the Country about the imnpact that James had on them. It makes us proud to know that he made lasting impressions. Jimmy's motto was "Follow Me", and hearing from all the different people we know that he had a lot of followers. His father always told him to lead from the front, and from where we stand he did that and more. We appreciate everyone that is keeping him alive. Remember our troops that are still standing in harms way. Jimmy your our hero and your fathers modern warrior, we love and miss you. Michele and Dad

Mr. and Mrs. McNaughton,
I went to Dawnwood Middle School with Jimmy and I had not spoken to him in many years. I just recently learned that James had passed on. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember him as a really good kid with a good heart and great sense of humor. I'm sure there is not a day that goes by when you do not think about him. I just wanted to express my sympathy to you. James was a real hero and I am grateful that this country had such a brave and noble man. God Bless your family.

Hi Mr. McNaughton,
I was at your son's grave site today when you stopped by. I had no idea who you were and, unfortunately, I had never heard of your son, but you made such an impression on me in 30 seconds. We were there visiting my husband's grandfather and Lt. Michael Murphy. My husband was Michael Murphy's high school football coach and we wanted to show our children, since they hear all about him. I was so touched by watching you run your hand over your son's name. Walking to my car I began to cry and I shared with my husband what you did. I decided to google his name and what I read was fascinating. Your son sounds like he was an amazing young man. I discovered that you took a job at Calverton, which I feel is a great way to stay close to your son. I admire your dedication to him and all the other heroes in Calverton. It's amazing to me what an impact you made on me today and all we did was smile at one another for about 2 seconds!!! I wish your family much peace in the future. May all the wonderful memories of James comfort you now and forever.
Sincerely, Cristina Carpluk

August 2, 2008

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know James, but I am remembering
his civilian and military service. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

I don't pretend to know what to say or do that would bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

I first joined the 306th MP BN before going off to basic training (as an old man of 29) in 1994. Just as I was set to return to the reserves, I was diagnosed with cancer and had to sit out for 6 years. I returned in early 2001, and saw some old faces, and new one's like SGT (at the time) McNaughton. He was born to serve, and born to lead. He said what he meant and meant what he said.
I didn't go on the '6th's deployment on 2002, but was transferred to another unit and ended up in Iraq in 2003. That unit lost 3 soldiers, the battalion, yet another soldier and another army unit at Marine camp Edson in Diwaniyah lost 3 soldiers as well.
The events of 2001 will never be forgotten. The forces of evil are never victorious. James McNaughton will never be forgotten by those who knew him, and he'll live on in our hearts.

I worked with McNaughton during a Homeland Security Mission with the 306th MP. He was as a professional soldier as one gets. You could always count on his leadership, it never wavered or faltered. I was deeply affected by his passing, Memorial Day '06 for the first time really meant something. I intend to continue sharing my memories of him every year with my students. He was good guy.

While stationed in Iraq I was able to get to know him well and i appreciated the friendship that we had he taught me one thing never take anything for granted in life and through him i realize that because life is precious, we should live our life accordingly but do not take it for granted because you never know when it will be gone.

Jimmy, this year has gone by so fast. We keep expecting you to walk through that door and say I was just joshing. You have been honored in so many wayw this year we couldn't even begin to tell you. Oh though we know your watching and know sometimes your laughing at us, and othertimes your just saying yeah, with a little jump and your fist raised in the air. If there was anyway we could possibly bring you back we would do it. We hope that how you have been honored and remembered by everyone is what you would have expected. Hopefully we have done what you would have wanted, thats all we wanted was to please you. You have not been forgotten or will anyone ever let that happen, between the Police Department and the Army and your family, friends and community they won't let you be forgotten. We're proud of your acomplishments, we're proud of your duty to your Country, you'll always be our hero, and be considered todays modern warrior by all. We love you and miss you tremendously, and all that know you feel the same way. At the same time everyone still is very proud to have known you. You will always be a leader and someone that people will look up to, and use you as an example. We hear it all the time from your fellow soldiers and Police Officers. Until we meet again we hope to represent you how you would want us to. With all our love, Dad, Michele, Ryan and Courtney

Everyday I think of you. The pain does not go away. You have been someone to look up to not only as an NCO but also as a person. Serving with you in Iraq has been an honor. You will never be forgotten.

"SSG McNaugton you were a natural leader of Soldiers. It was my honor to have known you during our 1st deployment in 2002, and needless to say I am terribly saddened by your loss. You gained many friends in the 306th but you also earned the respect of all as you consistently “lead from the front” and cared for Soldiers. We are a lesser Nation and a lesser Army in your absence. May God bless you for your sacrifice, and do watch over your family in this their time of grief."
