Peter Graves Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 15, 2010.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Peter Graves, whose calm and intelligent demeanor was a good fit to the intrigue of "Mission: Impossible" as well as the satire of the "Airplane" films, has died.

Graves passed away Sunday just a few days before his 84th birthday outside his home in Los Angeles, publicist Sandy Brokaw said. Graves was returning from brunch with his wife of nearly 60 years and his family when he had what Graves' doctor believed was a heart attack, Brokaw said.

Graves first gained attention of many baby boomers with the 1950s TV series "Fury," but remained best known for the role of Jim Phelps, leader of a gang of special agents who battled evil conspirators in TV's "Mission: Impossible."

Normally cast as a hero, he turned in an unforgettable performance early in his career as the treacherous Nazi spy in Billy Wilder's 1953 prisoner-of-war drama "Stalag 17."

He also masterfully lampooned his straight-arrow image when he portrayed bumbling airline pilot Clarence Oveur in the 1980 disaster movie spoof "Airplane!"

Graves appeared in dozens of films and a handful of television shows in a career of nearly 60 years.

The authority and trust he projected made him a favorite for commercials late in his life, and he was often encouraged to go into politics.

"He had this statesmanlike quality," Brokaw said. "People were always encouraging him to run for office."

Graves was preceded in stardom by his older brother James Arness, who played Marshal Matt Dillon on TV's "Gunsmoke."

Born Peter Aurness, Graves adopted his grandfather's last name to avoid confusion with his older brother, who had dropped the "U" from the family name.

Graves' career began with cheaply made exploitation films like "It Conquered the World," in which he battled a carrot-shaped monster from Venus, and "Beginning of the End," in which he fought a giant grasshopper.

He later took on equally formidable human villains each week on "Mission: Impossible."

Every show began with Graves, as agent Phelps, listening to a tape of instructions outlining his team's latest mission and explaining that if he or any of his agents were killed or captured "the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions."

The tape always self-destructed within seconds of being played.

The show ran on CBS from 1966 to 1973, with Graves joining the cast in 1967, and was revived on ABC from 1988 to 1990 with Graves back as the only original cast member.

The actor credited clever writing for the show's success.

"It made you think a little bit and kept you on the edge of your seat because you never knew what was going to happen next," he once said.

He also played roles in such films as John Ford's "The Long Gray Line" and Charles Laughton's "The Night of the Hunter," as well as "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell," "Texas Across the River" and "The Ballad of Josie."

Graves' first television series was the children's Saturday morning show, "Fury," about an orphan and his untamed black stallion. It lasted six years on NBC.

In his later years, Graves brought his white-haired eminence to PBS as host of "Discover: The World of Science" and A&E's "Biography" series.

He noted during an interview in 2000 that he made his foray into comedy somewhat reluctantly.

Filmmakers Jim Abrahams and David and Jerry Zucker had written a satire on the airplane-in-trouble movies, and they wanted Graves and fellow handsome actors Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen and Robert Stack to spoof their serious images.

All agreed, but Graves admitted to nervousness. On the one hand, he said, he considered the role a challenge, "but it also scared me."

"I thought I could lose a whole long acting career," he recalled.

"Airplane!" became a box-office smash, and Graves returned for "Airplane II, The Sequel."

Graves was a champion hurdler in high school in Minnesota, as well as a clarinet player in dance bands and a radio announcer.

After two years in the Air Force, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota as a drama major and worked in summer stock before following his brother west to Hollywood.

He found enough success there to send for his college sweetheart, Joan Endress. They were married in 1950 and had three daughters - Kelly Jean, Claudia King and Amanda Lee - and six grandchildren.

Personally I will never forget Peter Graves singing to is wife "My Wonderful One" on a Sunday a few years ago after appearing with the Mormon Tabernacle choir at their Christmas concert. I was lucky enough to be in the audience the following morning for Music and the Spoken Word when his wife arrived after being snow bound and unable to attend the concert. It was their wedding anniversary. I will never hear that song without thinking of them fondly, A.E.T. Salt Lake City

June 15, 2010

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family of Peter Graves. I was reading comments on the BBC website from members of the public about Mr Graves and it was touching to see how they all felt he was a genuine, lovely gentleman. These comments were from all over the world, from Australia to Botswana, and it is a testament to the man that he was so universally loved and admired. I too am a Christian and lost my father a few years ago and I know God really cares. I find real comfort in God's lovely promise of the resurrection and the bible verse at Revelation 21:4 where he promises that, 'he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be any more. The former things have passed away.' Just imagine that day when we will see our loved ones again and the pain and tears of losing them will be a thing of the past. Our loving thoughts are with you all. Zara, England, UK.

To the Graves Family:
I just recently heard from a friend that Peter Graves died last month. I am heartbroken. He was one of my favorite actors, along with his brother James Arness. I had been praying for him and his brother daily.
I am a Christian, and hope to see Peter again someday in heaven. I will continue to pray for all your family. I know the pain of loss, when my dear mother died of cancer 10 years ago, and my father died of a heart attack 9 years ago. The pain of loss never goes away. God bless you all. Dwight Baudendistel. To the Graves Family,
Although I didn't personally know Peter, he always seemed to give off an aura of serenity and calm confidence in his physical demeanor.
And that affableness translated well on screen, which is why I offer you my deepest condolence on his passing.
Please remember that God's word the Bible offers hope that all this suffering will soon end Isaiah 54:13 &17: And all your sons will be persons taught by Jehovah, and the peace of your sons will be abundant…This is the hereditary possession of the servants of Jehovah…
Pray for one another and remember the good times you shared in Peters life.

For Peter...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...

I was so saddened to learn of Mr. Graves passing. My mother had been his history teacher at Southwest High School in Minneapolis and had told me stories of how tall both Peter and his brother James were for their ages and for the time at which they lived. She chuckled about how they would have to wind their long legs around the small school desks of the time in order to sit down for class. She talked about what a lovely and talented man he was, and I was able to see that for myself during his long acting career. He will be deeply missed.

He truly was a man people could look up to and admire, not very many of those these days. He will be deeply missed by all.

I'm a real oldtimer when it comes to Peter Graves whom I watched as Jim Newton (of the Broken Wheel Ranch) in "Fury" every saturday morning in the '50s. Even as a little girl, I had a "crush" on him. I hope that someday they bring this wonderful children's show to cable.

It was his introduction to a long and wonderful career.

I shall miss him deeply. I have been a fan most of my life, I remember watching him in MI with my dad.
